Description

Dual Purpose Packaging Container The present invention relates to a blank for producing a packaging container for a personal electronic device and a method for forming the blank into a packaging container. In particular, the packaging container can be formed in one of two different orientations, in which either the personal electronic device is secured to the outer surface or on the inner surface of the container.
Sellers of personal electronic devices such as mobile telephones and tablets usually package the devices so that they can be seen by the customer, either through a clear section in the packaging or when the lid of the packaging is opened. The devices also need to be held rigidly in position so that they do not move in the packaging either when on display or during transit. Packaging used when selling devices is commonly disposed of by the purchaser on receipt of the device. The packaging is usually formed of different materials including card or board to form the packaging container, clear plastic sheets to allow the device to be seen and other materials such as metal or plastic ties to hold the device in place, as well as, in some cases, polystyrene foam inserts or filler.
Reusability and recyclability are ever increasing concerns for customers when buying products such as personal electronic devices. Not only are customers looking for reusable products but also reusable or recyclable packaging.
GB2565039 discloses a packaging container which is formed only using cardboard and a thin plastics film. This packaging container is intended for the sale of mobile telephones and secures the telephone on the internal base of the container. The packaging is designed to be easily recycled. The container does not allow the customer to see the packaged article until the container is fully opened. This packaging is capable of being used in only one orientation.
There is a growing demand for companies and initiatives that provide buying and recycling services for old telephones or other personal electronic devices such as tablets. In addition, telephone manufacturing companies typically provide repair services for telephones, particularly when under warranty. Third party repair companies also provide similar repair services. All of these require a customer to repackage and send off their unwanted or broken personal electronic devices. Some companies send out packaging boxes to the customer which allow them to package the device to be sent off safely. Alternatively, it is necessary for the customer to provide packaging and attempt to ensure that the electronic device is held sufficiently securely.
It would be advantageous to provide packaging for personal electronic devices that can additionally be reused, in particular for posting or sending the device securely, and then is easily recyclable once it has been reused.
In the present application, the inventor has identified that it would be advantageous to provide a packaging blank which is capable of being reused. IN particular, it would be advantageous to provide a packaging blank which can be used in a first orientation, in which a personal electronic device is displayed on the surface of the produced container and then re-used one or more times in a second orientation in which the personal electronic device is securely held in position inside the container, allowing it to posted.
In a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a blank for producing a packaging container for a personal electronic device, wherein the blank can be folded into a first orientation in which the electronic device is secured on an external surface of a closed packaging container and a second orientation in which the electronic device is secured on an internal surface of the closed packaging container, the blank comprising a base panel, a first side panel, a second side panel, a top panel, a first end flap and a second end flap for forming a closed container in both the first and the second orientations; a receiving surface for receiving the electronic device, wherein in the first orientation, the receiving surface is on an external face of the closed container and in the second orientation, the receiving surface is on an internal face of the closed container; fastening means for fastening the blank in either the first or second orientation; and lo securing means for securing the electronic device to the receiving surface.
A personal electronic device can be secured to the receiving surface using the securing means. The blank advantageously can then be folded into either the first or second orientations as the user chooses. In the first orientation, the device is secured on the outside of the container so that it is clearly visible. Other components for the device such as cables or instruction leaflets can advantageously be stored inside the container. In the second orientation, the device is secured on the inside of the container so that the container can be used to transport the device for example by post.
The personal electronic device is preferably a mobile phone, a table computer or a laptop computer. Other devices having a generally "slate" shape, being rectangular in shape and relatively shallow, are also suitable for use with the packaging container of the present invention.
Preferably, the fastening means comprises at least one fastening flap and at least one receiving slot, wherein each fastening flap can be inserted into at least one receiving slot to fasten the packaging container in either orientation. It is further preferred that the fastening means comprises only one fastening flap and only one receiving slot, wherein the fastening flap can be inserted into the receiving slot to fasten the packaging container in either orientation.
In a preferred embodiment, the blank comprises means for securing the at least one fastening flap in the at least one receiving slot, wherein said means comprises a secondary securing slot in the fastening flap and a locking flap positioned in the receiving slot, such that when the fastening flap is passed through the receiving slot, the locking flap interlocks with the fastening flap via the secondary securing slot, securing the fastening flap in position. This embodiment advantageously locks the blank in a closed position in either the first or second orientations.
In one preferred embodiment, the blank comprises means for securing the end flaps in place when the blank is folded up in either orientation. The securing means are particularly useful when the blank is folded into the second orientation to ensure that the end flaps do not open during transit. It is preferred that the means for securing the end flaps comprises an end flap securing flap and a securing slot in each end flap for receiving the securing flap in either orientation. One preferred method of providing the securing means it to provide the end flap securing flap on a free edge of a panel in which the end flap securing flap is formed of a portion which extends beyond the edge of the panel and a portion which is formed by cuts in the panel, such that all of the portion extending beyond the edge of the panel can be moved out of the plane of the panel, to allow easier engagement with the securing slot of the end flap.
In a further preferred embodiment, the blank additionally comprises support flaps for providing rigidity to the container in either orientation when secured inside the container adjacent to the end flaps.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the blank comprises a receiving panel, which comprises the receiving surface, wherein the receiving panel is attached along a first edge to an edge of one of the base panel, the first side panel, the second side panel and the top panel, and a securing panel, which is attached to the opposite edge of the receiving panel, wherein the securing means is attached to the securing panel and the panel adjacent the receiving panel. The securing means is preferably formed of a thin film that is attached to the securing panel and the panel adjacent the receiving panel and passes over the receiving surface.
The end flaps for closing the container in either orientation are preferably attached to the securing panel such that the securing panel and receiving panels are secured in place when the blank is in either orientation.
As used herein, the term fold is intended to cover any feature which allows two adjacent sections of the blank to be folded relative to one another. The fold could alternatively take the form of other standard features in the art such as a score or perforated break line.
The sheet of the packaging container is formed from rigid packaging material. Preferably, the rigid packaging material is a cardboard material. The cardboard material provides rigidity to the container. Non-limiting examples of cardboard materials include boxboard, recycled boxboards such as unlined chipboard and brown lined chipboard; white lined chipboard, paperboard or cardboard, corrugated paperboard or cardboard and mixtures thereof. Although other rigid packaging materials can be used for the packaging container, such as rigid plastics materials, cellulosic materials of this kind are cheap to produce and use and can be readily recycled.
It is further preferred that the film layer is formed from a flexible plastics material.
The purpose of the film layer is to hold an article in position. Any suitable material can be used for this layer. Non-limiting examples of preferred materials include polyethylene and polypropylene films, such as low density polyethylene, biodegradable plastic films such as polylactides and other plastics known to the person skilled in the art. It is preferred that the film layer is transparent so that the article can be seen through the film layer.
The film layer is attached directly to the sheet. Any suitable attachment means can be used. However, it is preferred that the film layer is attached using adhesive.
The packaging blank preferably forms a package having a cuboid shape. The panels are therefore shaped to form a cuboid.
In one particularly preferred embodiment, there is provided a blank for producing a rectangular cuboid packaging container for a personal electronic device, wherein the blank can be folded into a first orientation in which the electronic device is secured on an external surface of a closed packaging container and a second orientation in which the electronic device is secured on an internal surface of the closed packaging container, the blank comprising: (i) a sheet formed from a rigid packaging material comprising: a receiving panel having a first surface for receiving the electronic device, wherein in the first orientation, the receiving surface is on an external face of a first wall of the closed packaging container and in the second orientation, the receiving surface is on an internal face of the first wall of the closed packaging container, wherein the receiving panel has a first side, a second side, a top edge and a bottom edge; a second panel having a first surface for forming the opposing surface of the first wall of the closed packaging container, such that in the first orientation, the opposing surface is on an internal face of the first wall of the closed packaging container and in the second embodiment, the receiving surface is on an external face of the first wall of the closed packaging container, wherein the second panel has a first side, a second side, a top edge and a bottom edge, wherein the bottom edge of the receiving panel is connected to the top edge of the second panel along a first crease; a third panel for forming an intermediate layer between the receiving panel and the second panel on the first wall of the closed packaging container in both the first and second orientations, wherein the third panel has a first side, a second side, a top edge and a bottom edge, wherein the top edge of the receiving panel is connected to the bottom edge of the third panel along a second crease; a fourth panel for forming a first side wall of the closed packaging container, wherein the fourth panel has a first side, a second side, a top edge and a bottom edge, wherein the bottom edge of the second panel is connected to the top edge of the fourth panel along a third crease; a fifth panel for forming a second wall of the closed packaging container opposite the first wall, wherein the fifth panel has a first side, a second side, a top edge and a bottom edge, wherein the bottom edge of the fourth panel is connected to the top edge of the fifth panel along a fourth crease; a sixth panel for forming a second side wall of the closed packaging container, wherein the sixth panel has a first side, a second side, a top edge and a bottom edge, wherein the bottom edge of the fifth panel is connected to the top edge of the sixth panel along a fifth crease; fastening means for fastening the sixth panel to the second panel, wherein the fastening means is a fastening panel, wherein the fastening panel is connected to the bottom edge of the sixth panel along a sixth crease; two end sections for forming the ends of the closed packaging container, wherein each end section is connected respectively to each of the first and second sides of the third panel, wherein each of the end sections is formed of at least a first panel for forming the end of the closed packaging container and a second panel for holding the end in position in place in the closed packaging container; and (ii) a film, wherein the film is attached to the first surface of the second panel and the third panel, wherein the film overlies the first surface of the receiving panel and wherein the personal electronic device may be positioned between the first surface of the receiving panel and a lower surface of the film and wherein when the packaging container is folded along the first crease and the second crease, the film secures the personal electronic device on the first surface of the second panel, such that the personal electronic device is held in position when the blank is folded in the first orientation or the second orientation.
