Abstract

A trim masking tape 10 comprises a first side (12, Fig. 1) having first and second elongate adhesive portions (14, 16, Fig. 1) covered with a liner 32 and a second side 20 having an elongate masking portion 22 at least partly aligned with the first adhesive portion and a third elongate adhesive portion 24 covered with a liner 30. Preferably, the first and second adhesive portions are adjacent and have the same width. A method of using a masking tape comprises adhering a first elongate adhesive portion of a first side to an inner body part, adhering a third elongate adhesive portion of a second side to an outer body part, wherein a second elongate adhesive portion covered by a liner faces outwards of the body part. The liner covering the second adhesive portion may be removed to which other masking tapes or protective films may be adhered.

Description

Masking Tape This invention relates to a masking tape, more particularly but not exclusively a trim masking tape and method of masking for automobile refinishing.
In automobile refinishing, a primary use of a masking tape is for protecting rubber trims and bodyside mouldings during an automobile refinish process.
Typically, a trim masking tape forms protection of door handles, tail-lights, door frames, windscreens and sunroofs for example. Using the trim masking tape removes a need to remove any trim from the automobile. In use, a trim masking tape presents a flexible plastic strip on one edge that slips neatly behind a moulding, trim or frame on its inside. A free edge or fold of the trim masking tape lies flat on the outside of the moulding, trim or frame so that the moulding, trim or frame is covered and protected from paint ingress.
The present invention provides an improved trim masking tape and method of trim masking.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a trim masking tape having on a first side of the tape a first elongate adhesive portion and a second elongate adhesive portion, both portions covered with a removable liner; and, on a second side of the tape, a first elongate masking portion being at least in part aligned with the first elongate adhesive portion, and also on the second side of the tape a third elongate adhesive portion covered with a removable liner.
When in-situ, a trim masking tape according to the first aspect enables an outer face to be used as an adhesive face such a user can adhere other masking tapes or protective films to the trim masking tape. Alternatively, the outer face can function as a masking tape when leaving the removeable liner covering the third elongate adhesive portion in place.
Such dual-functionality offers flexibility of use for a user and obviates a need to bond further adhesive tapes to the masking tape since the outer face can become readily adhesive by simply removing the removable liner covering the outer facing third elongate adhesive portion. The flexibility provides time saving for a user and reduces the amount of additional parts that a user needs to perform the task of automobile refinishing.
Preferably, the first and second elongate adhesive portions are adjacent each other, running substantially parallel along the length of the tape.
Preferably, the first and second elongate adhesive portions are substantially the same width.
Preferably, the first elongate masking portion is the same width as the first elongate adhesive portion and runs substantially parallel along the length of the tape.
Preferably, the first elongate masking portion is of a wider or narrower width as the first elongate adhesive portion and runs substantially parallel along the length of the tape.
Preferably, the removable liner is a silicone liner.
Preferably, the first elongate masking portion is a laminated polyester strip.
Preferably, the tape can take on any dimensions so long as it is stiff enough to allow insert between, say, a rubber trim and body part and contribute to lever the rubber away from the body. In this way, the tape slides between the parts and may have a flat, stiffening edge to enable efficient insertion.
Preferably, the first elongate masking portion is between 100 and 150 microns, preferably 125 microns thick.
Preferably, the first elongate masking portion is between 5 to 12mm, preferably 9mm wide or has an edge 9mm from the edge of the tape.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of trim masking using a trim masking tape comprising: removing a liner covering a first elongate adhesive portion; adhering the first elongate adhesive portion to an inner body part; removing a liner covering a third elongate adhesive portion on a second side of the tape and adhering the third elongate adhesive portion to an outer body part; wherein a second elongate adhesive portion, covered with a removable liner, is facing outwards of the body part.
Preferably, the method includes removing the liner covering the second elongate adhesive portion.
Preferably, the method includes adhering other masking tapes or protective films to the second elongate adhesive portion.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a first side of a trim masking tape according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is a plan view of a second side of a trim masking tape according to the present invention; and Figure 3 is a schematic view of a trim masking tape in part use, according to the present invention.
Therefore, according to a first embodiment of the present invention, a trim masking tape 10 comprises on a first side 12 a first adhesive section 14 and a second adhesive section 16. The first 14 and second 16 adhesive sections are covered with a removable liner silicone liner (not shown in Figure 1). Figure 2 shows a second side 20 the trim masking tape 10 of Figure 1 and comprises a masking section 22 and a third adhesive section 24 covered with a removable silicone liner (not shown in Figure 2).
Figure 3 is a schematic view of the trim masking tape 10 in part use, according to the present invention. The tape 10 shows the second side 20 as described in Figure 2 comprising the masking section 22 and the third adhesive section 24 covered with a removable silicone liner 30. In use, the removeable silicone liner 30 is stripped back to reveal an adhesive layer of the tape 10. On the underside of the tape 10 is a further removeable silicone liner 32 in part removal status.
In use, a user takes a first side of the trim masking tape 10 and removes a silicone liner from the first adhesive section 14 the first face 12 and adheres this section to inner surface of a trim of an automobile. The masking section 22 sits neatly on the opposing side of the first adhesive section 14 and presents a non-adhesive face to, for example, a door frame when a door is closed around the tape.
Then, a user removes a silicone liner 32 from a third adhesive section 24 and adheres this section to an outer surface of a trim of an automobile. The first 14 and third adhesive 24 sections are not above and below the same section of trim masking tape 10 but are diagonally opposite. That is, the footprints of the first 14 and third 24 adhesive sections to do not overlap, but if they do, they only partially overlap by around up to 20% of area.
The outer facing second adhesive section 16 may be used as a masking area or a removable liner silicone liner can be removed to present an adhesive face such a user can adhere other masking tapes or protective films to the trim masking tape.

Claims (14)

  1. Claims: 1 A trim masking tape having on a first side of the tape a first elongate adhesive portion and a second elongate adhesive portion, both portions covered with a removable liner; and, on a second side of the tape, a first elongate masking portion being at least in part aligned with the first elongate adhesive portion, and also on the second side of the tape a third elongate adhesive portion covered with a removable liner.
  2. 2 A trim masking tape as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first and second elongate adhesive portions are adjacent each other, running substantially parallel along the length of the tape.
  3. 3 A trim masking tape as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the first and second elongate adhesive portions are substantially the same width.
  4. 4 A trim masking tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first elongate masking portion is the same width as the first elongate adhesive portion and runs substantially parallel along the length of the tape.
  5. A trim masking tape as claimed in claims 1 to 3, wherein the first elongate masking portion is of a wider or narrower width as the first elongate adhesive portion and runs substantially parallel along the length of the tape.
  6. 6 A trim masking tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first and third elongate adhesive sections are not above and below the same section of tape but are diagonally opposite on opposing sides of the tape.
  7. 7 A trim masking tape as claimed in claims 1 to 5, wherein the footprints of the first and third elongate adhesive sections to do not overlap, optionally they partially overlap.
  8. 8 A trim masking tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the removable liner is a silicone liner.
  9. 9 A trim masking tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the the first elongate masking portion is a laminated polyester strip.
  10. 10 A trim masking tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first elongate masking portion is between 100 and 150 microns, preferably 125 microns thick.
  11. 11 A trim masking tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first elongate masking portion is between 5 to 12mm, preferably 9mm wide or has an edge 9mm from the edge of the tape.
  12. 12 A method of trim masking using a trim masking tape comprising: removing a liner covering a first elongate adhesive portion; adhering the first elongate adhesive portion to an inner body part; removing a liner covering a third elongate adhesive portion on a second side of the tape and adhering the third elongate adhesive portion to an outer body part; wherein a second elongate adhesive portion, covered with a removable liner, is facing outwards of the body part.
  13. 13 A method as claimed in claim 12, including removing the liner covering the second elongate adhesive portion.
  14. 14 A method as claimed in claim 13, including adhering other masking tapes or protective films to the second elongate adhesive portion.
