Abstract
258,633. Kirschner, F., and Hess, J. April 21, 1925. Electrode and resistance furnaces. - In a machine for thermically treating plated, in particular electrolytically plated, metal sheets, the sheets are transported piece by piece, and are guided and held in a predetermined path through the machine, the sheets being heated to fuse the metal coating and then cooled to cool the sheets and harden the coating fused thereon, the means for holding &c. the sheets being so arranged with regard to the heating and cooling means that the holding means do not contact with the sheets in the zone between the heating and cooling means. The sheets are passed through an electrically-heated muffle furnace 140, Fig. 22, being fed through the entrance end of the furnace by ordinary rollers and then by grooved rollers 144 engaging the edges of the sheets. To adjust the position of the rollers 144 for different widths of the sheets the rollers are mounted on spindles 155 and driven by worm gearing 153, 154 mounted in a casing 156 adapted to rock round a flexible shaft 151 driven bv a bevel 150 and carrying an adjustable arm 157 adapted to be locked in position in a fork 158. Instead of heating the sheets by the resistances 141 the sheets may be heated by the passage of current through them, the rollers 144 in this form being supplied with current. In a further modification the sheets are fed vertically through a vertical muffle 174, by plain rollers 178, and grooved rollers 179, the sheets being heated by resistances 180, spring-pressed guides being provided in the delivery slot 176 to feed the sheets to the rollers 194 in the channel 193 of the tank 192. To adjust the level of the liquid in the tank 192, adjustable baffles 191 are provided so that a slight air cooling may be given to the sheets before they enter the cooling liquid.
