Abstract

A solar-powered light fitting suitable for installation on the exterior of a building on a cylindrical support such as a rainwater downpipe 32 comprises a body 10 that includes a recess (26, Fig. 4) which extends along an axis A and is shaped as a part cylinder extending for more than 180° about the axis. Material of the body forms retaining wings 34 at a periphery of the recess. One or more portions of elastomeric material 30 may be provided within the recess 26 to resist movement of the light fitting up or down the downpipe. The light fitting has a transparent or translucent window (16, Fig. 2) to pass light from a light source within the body. A lighting installation comprises such a light fitting and a cylindrical support, a part of which is received within the recess 26 of the light fitting whereby the wings 34 pass beyond a region of maximum diameter of the support to retain the light fitting on the support.

Description

Light fitting This invention relates to light fittings. In particular, it relates to a light fitting for use on the exterior of 2 building.
Provision of lighting to the exterior of a building can be challenging: some mechanism for mounting a light fitting must be provided as must a source of electricity. There are many occasions where exterior lighting is desired, but permanent modification of a building (for example, drilling holes for cables or screws) is not practicable, not desirable or not permitted.
The combination of a photovoltaic panel, a rechargeable battery and LED light sources allows exterior light fittings to operate independently of a supply of mains electricity. However, the need remains to provide a means for mounting such light fittings.
An aim of this invention is to provide a light fitting that can be mounted on the exterior of a building without the need to modify the building and without placing a requirement of any particular skill on a person performing the installation. It should be apparent that in the context of this specification, the term "building" is not limited to a permanent building, but could include a temporary structure. Nor is it limited to any particular form of construction, and could, for example, include a structure formed of masonry, wood, metal fabrication or prefabricated panels, to give but a few examples.
The inventors have realised that many domestic buildings have rainwater guttering systems that include downpipes mounted on their external walls. A feature of these downpipes is that they have a cylindrical outer surface that has a specific, known diameter. For example, in the UK, standards specify that downpipes are typically 68 mm or 112 mm in diameter.
To this end, from a first aspect, the invention provides a light fitting comprising a body that includes a recess, which recess extends along an axis and is shaped as a part cylinder extending for more than 180° about the axis, material of the body forming retaining wings at a periphery of the recess.
A light fitting embodying the invention may include one or more portions of elastomeric material within the recess. This can serve to enhance the grip that a light fitting can apply to a support. The body, at least in the region of the wings, may be formed of a resilient material.
A light fitting light fitting embodying the invention typically includes a transparent or translucent window whereby light from a light source within the body can emerge from the body. There is typically a solar-powered lighting arrangement within the body.
From a second aspect, the invention provides a lighting installation comprising a light fitting embodying the first aspect of the invention and a cylindrical support a part of which is received within the recess of the light fitting whereby the wings pass beyond a region of maximum diameter of the support to retain the light fitting on the support.
In a lighting installation embodying this aspect of the invention, the cylindrical support may be a component of a building, in particular, a rainwater downpipe.
From a third aspect, the invention provides a method of providing a lighting installation, which method comprises causing a portion of a cylindrical support to enter the recess of a light fitting embodying the first aspect of the invention and applying force to the light fitting to cause the wings to pass a region of maximum diameter of the support to retain the light fitting on the support.
Application of the light fitting to the support preferably causes elastomeric material within the recess to be forced into contact with the support Such a method typically causes the light fitting to be applied to a component of a building, in particular, a rainwater downpipe.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a view from above of a light Fitting being an embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a view from below of the light fitting of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a view from below of the light fitting of Figure 1 mounted on a downpipe; Figure 4 is a first axonometric view of the light fitting of Figure 1; and Figure 5 is a second axonometric view of the light fitting of Figure 1.
With reference to the drawings, a light fitting embodying the invention includes a body 10 formed from an upper moulding 12 and a lower moulding 14 of plastic material. The mouldings are interconnected around part of their peripheries to form a generally smooth outer profile. At the part of the peripheries that are not interconnected, an opening is formed between the peripheries mouldings 12, 14. A translucent plastic window 16 is located within the opening. The mouldings 12, 14 and the window 16 form a closed, weatherproof enclosure. The body 10 has a front surface region 20 that is convex in shape, part of which is formed by the window 16. An upper surface region is flat and carries a photovoltaic cell array 22. Above the window 16, an aperture 18 is formed through the upper moulding 12.
A recess 26 is formed in a rear part of the body 10. As seen in Figures 1 and 2, the recess 26 is, in cross-section, generally C-shaped, being part of a cylinder extending about a longitudinal axis A by an angle 0 that is somewhat more than 180°, whereby the material of the housing adjacent to the recess forms a pair of wings 34. A band of elastomeric material is provided on the surface of the body within the recess 26.
The recess has a diameter that corresponds to that of a pipe on which the lamp fitting is to be installed. For example, in the UK, it is common for domestic rainwater guttering systems to incorporate downpipes with a 68 mm outside diameter. A light fitting for mounting on such a pipe will have a recess that is approximately 68 mm, with the consequence that the band of elastomeric material 30 has a diameter a few mm less than 68mm. Other sizes of downpipes exist, and if a light fitting embodying the invention is to be used with them, the recess will have to be re-sized appropriately.
Internally of the body, the light fitting includes an LED light source with and a compatible driving circuit The light source is disposed to direct light onto the window 16. An ambient light sensor and PIR sensor are disposed adjacent to the aperture 18. A rechargeable battery and the photovoltaic array 22 are connected to the driving circuit. The operation of the internal components of the light fitting, to keep the battery charged and operate the light on detection of a person, is conventional, so will not be described further.
To install this light fitting embodying the invention, it is placed onto a rainwater downpipe 32 such that the recess 26 partially surrounds the downpipe 32. The light fitting is then pushed onto the downpipe. Compression of the elastomeric band 30 and flexion of the pipe allows the wings 34 to pass the maximum diameter of the downpipe 32 to retain the light fitting in place on the downpipe 32. The elastomeric band 30 also resists movement of the light fitting up or down the downpipe 32. To remove the light fitting, it is simply pulled from the downpipe 32. Fitting and removal requires no tools nor modification to the downpipe or any other component
