Abstract

A wave energy converter includes a surface float 102, a drivetrain 108 disposed within the float, and a submerged reaction structure 104 which has a moment of inertia in pitch and roll greater than a moment of inertia in pitch and roll of the surface float 102. The float 102 and reaction structure 104 are mechanically coupled by at least one flexible tether 106. The float 102 may have a non-axisymmetric profile. The moment of inertia of the float 102 may be different in heave, pitch and/or roll, such that the natural period of the float in different modes is distributed across the significant period range of wave energy at a deployment location. The drivetrain 108 may comprise a hydraulic system and a linear generator.
