Description
Skin Treatment Composition The present invention relates to a composition which can be used in the treatment of the skin, including skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, and other dry skin conditions, wherein the composition is substantially free of any paraffin-based components.
Compositions for use in the treatment of skin conditions have been known for some time. Examples of known commercially available products include those marketed as Cetreben Cream, Hydromol Cream and Ultrabase cream. These products are all supplied in tubs and pumps in a cream format, and are known to contain large quantities of paraffin-based ingredients such as Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil) and Petrolatum, which results in very rich and very heavy creams. These products work by offering a skin-barrier effect.
However, paraffin-based products, and even products which contain paraffin-based emollients, have recently come under fire due to the dangers of dressing, clothing and bedclothes which is used to cover emollient products. Such dressing, clothing and bedclothes is brought into contact with the products, absorbs them, and can then potentially catch fire if exposed to a naked flame. There are recorded incidents of this occurring. This is clearly an eventuality which is not desirable. The products are also a fire hazard upon packing.
It would therefore be desirable to develop a composition which can be used in the treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, and other dry skin conditions, which contains very little, or does not contain any paraffin-based components, and which can therefore be used safely, without the potential risk of combustion.
Therefore, in accordance with the invention, there is provided a composition comprising a skin-conditioning agent, an emollient, and a humectant, wherein the composition comprises no more than about 2.0 wt% of any paraffin-based components According to one embodiment of the invention, the composition comprises no more than about 1.0 wt%, or 0.5 wt%, of any paraffin-based components.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the composition is substantially free or completely free of any paraffin-based components.
The skin-conditioning agent is an ingredient which enhances the appearance of dry or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness, regenerating the skin barrier, or which attracts and holds moisture in the skin. It may also slow the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin's surface, and act as a lubricant on the skin surface, which gives the skin a soft and smooth appearance.
The skin-conditioning agent may comprise octyldodecanol, Hel anthus Annuus (sunflower) seed oil unsaponifiables (including phytosterole, tocopherole and squale), and Cardiospermum Halicacabum flower/leaf/vine extract. It may also contain echium plantagineum seed oil (2H-1-Benzopyran-6-ol, 3,4-dihydro-2,7,8-trimethy1-2-(4,8,12-trimethyltridecy1)42R42R*(4R*,8R*)]] ).
One such skin-conditioning agent which may be used in accordance with the invention is marketed under the trade name Defensila Defensil is a skin-conditioning agent that is used as primarily as a cosmetic agent, for example in the prevention of skin blemishes and control pimple-causing bacteria against pimples and spots, and is a blend of different 'cosmetic active' ingredients, which include octyldodecanol, echium plantagineum seed oil (2H-1-Benzopyran-6-ol, 3,4-dihydro-2,7,8-trimethy1-2- (4,8,1 2-trim ethyltri decy1)42 R-[2 R*(4R*,8 R *)]] ), H el i anthus Annuus (sunflower) seed oil unsaponifiables (including phytosterole, tocopherole and squale), and Cardiospermum Hal cacabum flower/leaf/vine extract. The ech um oil is very rich in stearidonic acid (an omega 3 fatty acid), has anti-inflammatory properties, and protects and strengthens the skin barrier; the unsaponifiable elements of the sunflower oil provide valuable nutritional elements such as phytosterols and squalene; and the Cardiospermum Halicacabum is effective against itching and allergenic skin rashes. A 2% Defensil composition has been shown in studies to be as effective on skin irritations over 2 hours as a 0.5% hydrocortisone composition.
Alternative skin-conditioning agents which may be used in the composition of the invention include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following: - Allantoin -which is a diureide of glyoxylic acid with the chemical formula C41-16151403, and is also called 5-ureidohydantoin or glyoxyldiureide, -Bisabalol -or more formally u-(-)-bisabolol, and is also known as levomenol, which is a natural monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol; - Aloe vera-containing ingredients; - Biotin -also known as vitamin H, and is one of the B complex vitamins, - One of more silicones, such as dimethicone; -One or more amino acids, such as arginine; - One or more proteins, such as hydrolysed wheat protein; - One or more peptides, such as hexapeptide-t * and/or An oat-containing component, which are known to have skin soothing properties These may include, for example, oat extracts, oat milk, oat proteins or oat oil.
Any of the skin-conditioning agents mentioned herein may be used alone or in combination in the composition of the invention.
As mentioned, the composition of the invention has been developed without the use of any paraffin-based emollients. In one embodiment, the composition of the invention is completely free of any paraffin-based components.
Instead, it has been developed with an alternative light emollient. An emollient is a preparation that softens the skin, by helping to keep the skin moist and supple by reducing water loss from the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. In the language of cosmetics or dermo-cosmetics, an emollient is a re-fatting agent, i.e. an ingredient of a cosmetic formulation that provides the skin with the fat it needs. It reduces evaporation and thus increases the moisture content of the skin.
Non-limiting examples of such emollients include one or more selected from isostearyl isostearate, caprylic or capric triglyceride, decyl oleate, Cu-Ci5 alkyl benzoate, myristyl myristate, coco-caprylate or coco-caprate, or any natural oil or butter (such as, but not limited to, almond oil, shea butter, or olive oil). Typically, the composition comprises an amount of isostearyl isostearate Isostearyl isostearate offers skin moisture barrier enhancing effects and improved spreadability on the skin. It offers a velvety skin feel is easily absorbed into the skin, leaving a non-greasy after-feel.
S
There may be components within the skin-conditioning agent which would also offer some skin emolliency benefits. For example, octydodcecanol and echium plantagineum seed oil are able to do this The composition of the invention also contains a humectant, which will help retain moisture in the skin. The humectant is a different, additional, component to the emollient. Non-limiting examples of humectants which may be used in the composition of the invention include, but are not limited to, one or more selected from glycerine, sodium pyrrolidone carbonic acid (sodium PCA), sodium hyaluronate, propanediol, zinc pyrrolidone carbonic acid (zinc PCA), betaine, panthenol, or natural plant extracts (such as, for example, Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem Extract which is a cactus extract offering skin hydrating properties; and Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Water which also offers also offers nourishing and hydrating properties).
The composition of the invention may also contain one or more further additive components. Such additive components may include, for example, one or more of a chelating agent (such as disodium EDTA), a preservative (such as potassium sorbate and/or phenoxyethanol and/or ethylhexylglycerin), a stabiliser or thickener (such as xanthan gum), an emulsion stabiliser or thickener (such as cetearyl alcohol), a non-ionic emulsifier (such as glyceryl stearate and/or polyethylene glycol-100 stearate, and/or ceteareth-20), a component to enhance emulsifying/stabilising/thickening properties further (such as sodium polyacryl ate and water), and a pH adjuster (such as citric acid). The pH of the composition is typically between about 5.0 and 6.0, such as about 5.5. In total, these additives typically do not constitute more than about 10 wt% of the composition.
The composition is also typically made up to 100 wt% with water.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the composition may contain from about 0.5 to about 10 wt% of the skin-conditioning agent; more typically from about 2 to about 8 wt%; more typically from about 3 to about 7 wt%i more typically from about 4 to about 6 wt%.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the composition may contain from about Ito about 30 wt% of the emollient; more typically from about 2 to about 25 wt%; more typically from about 5 to about 20 wt% more typically from about 7.5 to about 15 wt%, or from about 8 to about 12 wt%. If more than about 10 wt% of the humectant is used, the composition may become rather tacky and have an unpleasant feel on the skin.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the composition may contain from about 1 to about 10 wt% of the humectant; more typically from about 1.5 to about 8 wt%; more typically from about 2 to about 5 wt%.
The composition of the invention may be provided in any suitable form for application to the skin of a person, such as but not limited to, in the form of a spray, a cream, a lotion, a balm, a gel, a serum, an oil, or a solid stick. The particular thickeners and emulsifiers, and their amounts in the composition, can be adjusted as necessary in order to provide the composition in whichever form is desired. When the composition is in a sprayable format, this also helps with the product dosage, light skin-feel and quick-drying effect on the skin.
The composition of the invention constitutes an improvement on the standard emollients on the market, and can be distinguished because it uses a combination of a non-paraffin based emollient, a humectant and a known ingredient with skin soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits, offering greater skin protection compared to products already on the market which work by only offering an emollient effect.
The composition of the invention as defined here nabove, comprising a skin-conditioning agent, an emollient, and a humectant, wherein the composition is substantially free of any paraffin-based components is provided for the treatment of dry skin conditions, such as but not limited to, psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis The present invention also provides a method of manufacturing a composition comprising a skin-conditioning agent, an emollient, and a humectant, wherein the composition is substantially free of any paraffin-based components, the method comprising the steps of combining a skin-conditioning agent, an emollient, and a humectant, wherein the composition comprises no more than about 2.0 wt% of any paraffin-based components.
According to one embodiment, the humectant is a different, additional, component to the emollient.
According to another embodiment, the humectant and emollient, which are typically different materials, are combined together before addition of the skin-conditioning agent.
In an exemplary, but non-limiting, method of the invention: Phase A: additive components -such as a chelating agent and/or a preservative -is heated in water up to a temperature of about 70-80°C. The humectant is mixed with a stabiliser or thickener (such as xanthan gum), and this mixture (PM1) is added to the mixture containing the water and additive components, with stirring and homogenising, until the stabiliser or thickener has completely dispersed.
Phase B: In a separate vessel, the emollient is heated up to a temperature of about 70-80°C with an emulsion stabiliser/thickener, one or more non-ionic emulsifiers, and an emulsifying polymer. Once the mixtures from Phase A and Phase B are at temperature, they are combined together. The new mixture is then cooled to about 35-45°C.
At this temperature, the skin-conditioning agent and a cosmetic preservative are added, with gentle homogenising. The pH of the mixture is then tested, and adjusted if required with a cosmetically-approved pH adjuster such as citric acid.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a use of a composition comprising a skin-conditioning agent, an emollient, and a humectant, wherein the composition is substantially free of any paraffin-based components, for the treatment of dry skin conditions, such as but not limited to, psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis.
