Abstract

An apparatus comprising a container 105 for liquids and a lid 100, where the lid comprises a central plate 4 and lip 3 that sits within the container so the lip is arranged against an inner surface of the container. The lip 3 may be curved or tapered, it may extend to comprise a rim 1, where the rim may be displaced radially from the central plate and the rim may extend parallel to the lip. The device may have an opening for accessing liquid, such as a hole 5 for a straw in the centre or an opening (15, fig 5) about the perimeter to sip or drink. The device for any apparatus is also claimed.

Description

APPARATUS COMPRISING A CONTAINER FOR LIQUIDS, AND A SUSTAINABLE
LID DEVICE
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an apparatus comprising a container for liquids, and a sustainable lid device, in particular a pulp-based lid device; more particularly but not exclusively a device for a cup-like container where both container and device are envisaged to be single-use.
Background
Increasing consumption of takeaway drinks is a feature in many societies.
Increasing recognition of environmental factors is also a feature in many societies.
In the standard circumstance of a takeaway drink, hot or cold, the user is liable to require a single-use container for consumption of the drink. These typically require a lid.
In light of environmental factors single-use typically means a need for sustainability, either through production or cycling of materials.
Prior Art
EP 2 757 194 (WANG et al) discloses a pulp moulded cup lid, the cup lid having smooth, non-reticulated inner and outer surfaces, comprising: a lid body; a sealing skirt axially extending downward the lid body; and a plurality of buckling projections disposed evenly and circumferentially on an outer surface of a lower portion of the sealing skirt; wherein the lid body has smooth, non-reticulated inner and outer surfaces.
WO 201 182 486 (DURDON) discloses a beverage cup and a lid therefor, where the outer walls of the beverage cup form an inverted truncated circular or oval cone, and 35 where at least a major portion of the outer periphery of the lid is circular or oval; wherein the lid is placed into the upper region of the beverage cup after it has been filled with a drinkable beverage, whereby the lid is located below the upper rim of the beverage cup when in place; wherein the lid is secured in place by an interference fit between the outer periphery of the lid and the inside surface of the outer walls of the beverage cup; wherein downward movement of the lid towards the bottom of the cup when it is in place is precluded by the presence of a stop means formed in the outer walls of the cup in the region where the lid will adopt its interference fit therewith; wherein the lid has an opening through which the beverage may be consumed without removing the lid from a cup; and wherein at least the lid is formed from a compostable material.
WO 2007 110 897 (HIDAKA) discloses a paper-made lid for a paper-made container, capable of being produced at extremely low cost without causing an environmental problem when it is discarded. The lid is used to cover the paper-made container having a curled section curled outward at the upper edge of a circular conical body section expanded upward. The lid is essentially made of paper and has a wall face section having a circular conical outer face engaging with the inner face of the circular conical body section of the paper-made container; a curled section of the lid, curled outward at the upper edge of the wall face section; and a top lid section provided inside the wall face section. The lower edge of the wall face section is bent, and the top lid section is fixed at a position above the lower edge The present invention arose in order to overcome problems suffered by existing devices.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus comprising a container for liquids, and a sustainable lid device; the device comprising a central plate and a perimetric lip, wherein the device is arranged to sit substantially internal the container, such that the lip is arranged against the inner surface of the container in use.
Advantageously in this way the device is arranged to seat more securely within the container, so as to both rely on the inner surface to prevent unseating and limit 35 potential for movement of the device with reference the container particularly laterally.
The pulp may be envisaged to comprise a sustainable and/or recyclable material, for example wood-pulp or paper.
The container may comprise a pulp based coffee cup or similar, wherein in some embodiments of the invention, and/or according to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus comprising a disposable cup formed of sustainable materials, and a device substantially as described herein.
In some embodiments the lip may be arranged to extend upwards from the central plate in use.
In some embodiments the lip may be arranged to depend downwards from the central plate in use.
In some embodiments the lip may be arranged to push against the inner surface in use.
In some embodiments the lip may comprise a tapered profile. This tapered profile 20 may consequently be arranged to engage with a tapered profile of the container's inner surface.
In some embodiments the lip may comprise a securement means within the container, or against the inner surface of the container. In addition or the alternative 25 in some embodiments the lip may comprise a sealing means within the container, or against the inner surface of the container.
In some embodiments the device may be wholly internal the container in use, wherein the device is arranged to fit inside the tapered inner surface of the container.
In some embodiments the lip may comprise a rim, which rim may comprise a perimetric edge to the lip. The rim may be envisaged to comprise an extension of the lip, for example extending orthogonal, parallel or in multiple planes. For example the rim may be envisaged to extend over the cup's edge in use.
In some embodiments the rim may be envisaged to provide a securing and/or sealing means in addition to or alternative from the lip.
In some embodiments the rim may comprise a resilience arranged to permit 5 expansion or displacement and reformation or replacement so as to grip onto or over the container, or part thereof.
In some embodiments the apparatus may comprise resilient displacement in part or whole. For example in some embodiments the lip may be arranged to deform from a first position to a second position, wherein in the second position the device is engaged over the container. Advantageously such displacement may be achieved through rearrangement or deformation of the device and/or container shape, rather than resilience in material properties.
Such securement means may comprise said deformability. For example in some embodiments the lip may be arranged to deform into the second position and may be resiliently urged to move to the first position.
This in turn ensures the lip engages with the inner surface and the device is 20 maintained in place.
The securement means may be envisaged to primarily consists of a friction fit. In some other embodiments it may comprise an interference or tolerance fit.
The securement means may comprise displaceable parts. For example the displaceable parts may comprise tabs or flaps.
In some embodiments the lip may comprise a corrugated, irregular or discontinuous profile.
In this way the lip may deform locally and globally so as to push against the inner surface of the container.
For example the lip may comprise circumferentially spaced radial creases, in a 35 creased condition being crushed to provide a solid, relatively thick mass containing a multiplicity of random, discontinuous circumferential folds, retaining the radial creases as a securing means to impart circumferential resilience to the lip.
In some embodiments the device may comprise a drinking opening.
Such opening may comprise a straw opening, for example comprising multiple deformable triangular displaceable segments.
Such opening may comprise a sip opening, comprising a projection extending above 10 the plate so as to as to support and elevate an opening above the plate, rendering the opening easier to reach in use, and/or locating the opening towards the periphery of the plate, or the lip.
In some embodiments the device may be adapted to expand under pressure from hot 15 gases passing through the opening from the container when the device is in sealing position on the container.
For example it may be envisaged that hot gases may lead to improvement, consolidation or creation of a sealing or securing means.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there may be provided a lid device substantially as described herein for use with an independently provided container. In such circumstances it may be envisaged that a tapered lip may enable the device to interfit, and/or provide a securing and/or sealing means on a variety of different dimension containers.

Detailed Description of Figures
With reference to the figures, in Figure 1 there is shown an embodiment of apparatus comprising a disposable container for liquids 105 and incorporating a first embodiment of the device 100 generally comprising a pulp based lid device; the device comprising a central plate 4 and a perimetric lip 3, wherein the device is arranged to sit internal the container 105, such that the lip 3 is arranged against the inner surface of the container.
In particular reference to the embodiment of the apparatus shown in Figure 1, the 30 apparatus comprises a pulp-based container 105 having an elevated base 36, as known in the art, to improve contact with subordinate surfaces, a rolled top edge 34, and a tapered body 35 therebetween.
The lid device shown in Figure 1 comprises a square circular opening 5 which is 35 formed by a segmented star of four triangular tabs.
The device comprises a plate 4 which is envisaged in use to be parallel the base 36 of container.
The plate extends upwards to provide a lip 3 with an arcuate portion and a vertical 5 portion. At the top of the vertical portion the lip reaches a corner with the rim 1.
The rim curves away from the corner of the lip and comprises a pinched or reduced end, which end is reduced in diameter to the rim.
The rim thereby reaches around the container edge in use, as shown in Figure 7, so as to provide a securing means, and a sealing means whereby spilled liquid will be directed down the outer surface of the container.
The rim and lip interface at the circular corner, and define a space 6 substantially 15 below the corner, defined between the outer surface of the lip, and the inner surface of the rim.
With reference to the second embodiment as shown in Figure 5 the embodiment of the device generally comprises a pulp based lid device; the device comprising a central plate and a perimetric lip, wherein the device is arranged to sit internal the container, such that the lip is arranged to push against the inner surface of the container.
In particular reference to the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 5, the device 25 comprises a sip opening 15.
The sip opening 15 is located proximate the rim 1 and comprises a lozenge shaped opening substantially orthogonal the radius of the plate 4.
The sip opening is located on a projection 14 that extends above the plate progressively from approximately the centre of the plate 4 so as to reach a height above the plate substantially equal the top surface of the rim.
With reference to the third embodiment as shown in Figure 8 there is shown a side 35 opening 55 in the lid which can be pressed out when the user wants to have a drink without using a straw. This side opening 55 may comprise a partly or wholly displaceable tab.
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated 5 that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of invention as defined by the claims, in particular but not solely combination of features of described embodiments.

Claims (10)

  1. Claims 1. Apparatus comprising a container for liquids, and a sustainable lid device; the device comprising a central plate and a perimetric lip, wherein the device is arranged to sit substantially internal the container, such that the lip is arranged against the inner surface of the container in use.
  2. 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the lip comprises a tapering profile.
  3. 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the lip comprises an arcuate profile.
  4. 4. Apparatus according to any preceding claim wherein the lip comprises an extending rim.
  5. 5. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the rim is displaced radially from the lip with reference the centre of the plate.
  6. 6. Apparatus according to claim 4 or 5 wherein the rim extends substantially parallel the lip at least in part.
  7. 7. Apparatus according to any preceding claim wherein the device comprises an opening for access to liquid.
  8. 8. Apparatus according to any preceding claim wherein the device comprises a central straw opening.
  9. 9. Apparatus according to any preceding claim wherein the device comprises a perimetric sip opening.
  10. 10. A device for apparatus according to any preceding claim.
