Description
Description
Method for authenticating a user to a digital tachograph of a vehicle by means of a mobile device, digital tachograph, mo5 bile device and data base device The invention is concerned with a method for authenticating a user to a digital tachograph of a vehicle by means of a mo10 bile device, digital tachograph, mobile device and a database device.
Vehicles like trucks comprise digital tachographs to track driving times of a driver. For identification of the driver common digital tachographs comprise a reader for specific identity cards. The login procedure at common digital tachographs comprises an insertion of a driver's identity card into the reader of the digital tachograph. The identity card comprises data to identify the driver. The card based login procedure has the disadvantage that it doesn't involve an authentication process to verify the identity of the driver as claimed by the identity card. In other words, it is not intended to prove the identity of the driver. It is therefore possible to a driver to log on to the digital tachograph by using an identity card of another driver. This may happen accidentally by confusing the identity cards. A log in with another identity card may also happen abusively to evade juristic restrictions of driving times. As the login procedure doesn't involve a verification process to verify the identity it is not possible to confirm the identity of the driver.
The use of specific identity cards has the disadvantage that an additional system of identification has to be established. To enable an identification of a user without the provision of a separate system, services use smartphones for user identification. To perform the login procedure, smartphones transmit identification data to terminals of a supplier via Bluetooth. Usually a user has to provide a password to prevent an identity theft. An additional authentication procedure is not common.
KR20130140304A discloses an apparatus for managing a digital tachograph based on a smartphone and a management method for the same. In this invention, the smartphone is used to provide a connection between the digital tachograph and a management agency server.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a smartphone based authentication method for a digital tachograph.
The object is accomplished by the subject matter of the independent claims. Advantageous developments with convenient and non-trivial further embodiments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims, the following description, and the drawings.
The invention comprises a method for authenticating a user to a digital tachograph of a vehicle by means of a mobile device. The method is initiated by a detection of a predefined user input by the mobile device. The mobile device may be a smartphone, a tablet, a smart watch, a laptop or a similar device. When the predefined user input is detected by the mobile device, the mobile device performs a predefined authentication process to verify an identity of the user. In other words, when the mobile device detects the predefined user in- put like a predefined gesture or a touch on a touch screen of the mobile device, the mobile device starts the process to prove the identity of the user. The authentication process may comprise a detection of biometrical features of the user by a sensor of the mobile device and a comparison of biomet-rical features of the user with stored biometrical data on the mobile device. The authentication of the user may be successful, when the measured biometrical data comply with the biometrical data, stored in the mobile device. Upon a successful authentication of the user, the mobile device requests login data of the authenticated user from a database device. In other words, when the identity of the user is ver-ified during the authentication process, the mobile device sends a request to the database device storing the login data of the user to transmit the login data of the user to the mobile device. The database may comprise a computer of the mobile device, a device of the vehicle or a server outside the vehicle. When the database device receives the request of the mobile device, the login data of the authenticated user are transmitted from the data base device to the mobile device. In other words, the database device sends the login data of the authenticated user to the mobile device, when the mobile device sends a request for the login data. The login data may comprise a code or a key specific to the user and/or the digital tachograph. The login data may comprise a permanent code or a transient code like a one-time password. The login data of the authenticated user are transmitted from the mobile de- vice to the digital tachograph via a wireless connection. In other words, the mobile device sends the login data of the authenticated user to the digital tachograph using a wireless connection and the digital tachograph receives the login data of the authenticated user. In a next step the digital tacho-graph performs a login procedure using the login data. Upon a successful login, a predefined function of the digital tachograph is activated by the digital tachograph. In other words, the login data are used to perform the login process at the digital tachograph. When the login procedure is successful, the digital tachograph activates the predefined function. The login procedure may comprise a comparison of the login data of the authenticated user with login data saved in the digital tachograph and/or a cryptographic verification. The predefined function may comprise a logging of a time or an acti-vation of a device.
The invention has the advantage that the identity of the user is verified by the mobile device before the login on the digital tachograph The invention also comprises embodiments that provide additional technical advantages.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the predefined authentication process comprises a verification of a fingerprint of the user. In other words, the mobile device senses the fingerprint of the user during the authentication process and compares the sensed fingerprint with a saved fingerprint of the user stored in the mobile device. The invention has the advantage, that the authentication process is based on a biometric detail of the user, detectable by a touch screen. As an example, it may be possible, that the fingerprint of the user is saved on the mobile device. During the authentication process, the user put at least one of his fingers on a touch screen of the mobile device to scan his fingerprint. The scanned fingerprint may be compared with the fingerprint saved in the mobile device. When the scan fingerprint is equal to the saved fingerprint, the mobile device may verify the user's identity and may request the login data from the database device.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the predefined authentication process comprises a verification of a face of the user. In other words, the authentication process comprises a face recognition of the user. The invention has the advantage, that a camera of the mobile device can be used to verify the identity of the user. It may be possible, that the mobile device takes one or more pictures or a movie of the face of the user and detects biometric features of the face. When the data comply with a face stored in the mobile device, the authentication may be successful.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the transmission of the login data of the authenticated user to the digital tachograph is performed using an uncoupled wireless connection between the mobile device and digital tacho- graph. In other words, the transmission is performed using a wireless connection, wherein a coupling or pairing of the digital tachograph and the mobile device is not necessary to enable the transmission between the mobile device and the digital tachograph. The invention has the advantage, that im-mediate transmission is possible. It may be possible that a user using a vehicle for the first time can login without a preceding coupling process.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the wire-less connection complies with a near field communication standard. In other words, the transmission of the login data from the mobile device to the digital tachograph is performed using an NFC connection. The invention has the advantage, that a common protocol is used to transmit the login data tool the digital tachograph. It may be possible, that the mobile device and the digital tachograph are configured to communicate according to ISO/IEC 14443, ISO/IEC 15693 or ISO/IEC 15408.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, an antenna of the digital tachograph for the transmission of the login data is arranged under a shelving surface of a vehicle cabin of the vehicle. In other words, the vehicle comprises a shelfing surface inside the cabin to place the mobile device, wherein an antenna of the digital tachograph for wireless communication is placed under the shelving surface. This embodiment has the advantage, that specific a position for the mobile device to establish a transmission of the login data is provided in the vehicle.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the digital tachograph of the vehicle blocks an ignition of the vehi- cle until the user is logged in. In other words, the ignition of the vehicle is blocked as long as the user is logged in in the digital tachograph. This gives the advantage, that it is not possible to start an engine of the vehicle without an au-thentication.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the database device comprises a computer device outside the vehicle. In other words, the database comprises a computer device out-side the vehicle, were the login data of the users are stored. This gives the advantage, that a centralised management of login data is possible. The computer device may be arranged in a computer centre of a company.

The mobile device 1 may comprise a camera and/or a microphone and/or a touchscreen to detect bi-ometric data of the driver like a face, a fingerprint or a voice of the user.
Fig. 2 shows a scheme of a method. The scheme shows a possible process of the login of the user at the digital tacho- graph 2. In a first step Sl, the user may perform the predefined user input at the mobile device 1. The predefined user input may be a predefined gesture on a touchscreen, a predefined voice command or an arrangement of the mobile device on a shelf surface of the vehicle. The mobile device 1 may de- tect the predefined user input and may initiate a Predefined authentication process 32 to verify an identity of the user by the mobile device 1. Upon recognition of the predefined user input, the smart phone may for example, perform an authentication process comprising a verification of the finger- print, the face or the voice of the user. Upon successful authentication of the user, the mobile device 1 may request login data of the authenticated user from the data base device 4 (S3). The request may be performed by sending request data to the database device 4 via a mobile Internet connec-tion. The data base device 4 may receive the request for the login data of the authenticated user and send the login data of the authenticated user to the mobile device 1 (54). The mobile device I may send the login data of the authenticated user to the digital tachograph 2 using a wireless connection 5 (55). The wireless connection 5 may be an NEC-connection. When the digital tachograph 2 receives the login data of the user, the digital tachograph 2 may perform a predefined login process S6 to verify the login data received by the mobile device 1. Upon successful login, the digital tachograph 2 may activate a predefined function of the digital tachograph and/or the vehicle 3 (S7). As an example, the digital tacho-graph 2 may activate an ignition of the vehicle 3.
The solution is based on the use of NFC technology to retire or at least complement the use of a classic card for driver identification in case of a digital tachograph. Due to the wide adaptation of smartphones they can be a viable alternative for user authentication and due to their extensive possibilities of user identification they could offer a greater security level for users than a classic card. The approach is based on a tachograph with NFC communication capabilities that is able to acquire user information from an NFC communication capable smartphone. The smartphone in this case plays the role in user identification through various methods e.g face scan, finger print etc. and for offering the data to the tachograph for user identification on the device. The user management can be done on a network based platform that is capable of communication with the smartphone.
The new authentication can guarantee a faster user registration as the information needs only to be propagated and no new card needs to be physically produced. Compared to previous claims the NFC technology is less soliciting on the battery than a Bluetooth based approach and no pairing procedure needs to be done. Transfer between cards can be stopped through the use of biological parameters for user identifica-tion. A change in approach would only affect the tachograph from hardware point of view and not the smartphone. The software for managing such a system would be a new business case.
Overall, the example shows how a smartphone based authentica35 tion is provided by the invention.
