Abstract

A fixing apparatus in the form of a clamp 8 for securing the edge profile of a room partition panel (e.g. glass partition panels with aluminium edge profiles 9, Fig. 5a) to a floor, wall or ceiling track or rail. The clamp 8 uses a clamp lever system 5 with an eccentric rotatable part 7b (e.g. quick release system) to pull clamp plate 3 against support member 2, clamping a part 9a (see Figs 3c/4) of partition profile between plate 8 and support 2. Another part of the member is then clamped to a different profile/tack/rail to secure a partition in place. Threaded shafts 4a/b may extend from clamp plate 3 through holes into support onto which clamp lever and nuts may be secured and adjusted. The claim may be L-shaped for a corner connection or T-shaped for intermediate connections (see Fig 6). Also claimed is a room partitioning system including the fixing apparatus.

Description

Fixing apparatuses for room partitioning systems, and room partitioning systems
Field of the Invention
S
The present invention concerns fixing apparatuses for room partitioning systems, and room partitioning systems. More particularly, but not exclusively, the invention concerns fixing apparatuses for securing an edge of a partition of a room partitioning system to a track mounted in a surface of a room.
Background of the Invention
Room partitioning systems for office spaces and the like often comprise partitions, which provide the internal walls of the office space, that are mounted in tracks in the surfaces of the office space, i.e. the floor, walls and/or ceiling. A cross-sectional view of an edge of an example panel is shown in Figure 1.
The partition 500 comprises a panel 505, which is formed of two double-glazed sheets of glass, each with an outer sheet 501 and inner sheet 502. While the panel 505 is formed of glass and so the partition 500 provides a transparent wall (or section of wall), it will be appreciated that other types of material could be used, for example wood, fibreboard or the like, so as to give an opaque wall.
The partition 500 further comprises an edge profile 510, which is mounted on the edge of the panel SOS. The edge profile 510 is a strip of aluminium of consistent cross-section along its length (hence "profile"). The outside edges 511 of the push against the inside edges of the outer sheets 501 of the surfaces 505. The edge profile 510 further comprises inner portions 512, which push against the inner sheets 502 of the panel 505. In this way, the edge profile 510 is held in place on the edge of the panel 505 by means of friction between the panel 505 and the edge profile 510.
To fix the partition 500 in position, conventionally the edge profile 510 is screwed to a track in a floor, wall or ceiling, using self-tapping screws that pierce the -2 -aluminium body of the edge profile 510, for example through the centre part 515 of the edge profile 510. However, while this is convenient and effective for permanent or semi-permanent installation of partitions, changing the position of a partition is difficult, and may need to be done by a professional workman. Such a system is not well-suited to the temporary installation of partitions, where it is desirable that they can be easily removed and/or moved.
It would be advantageous to solve or mitigate some or all of the above mentioned problems. Alternatively and/or additionally, it would be advantageous to provide improved fixing apparatuses for room partitioning systems, and improved room partitioning systems.
Summary of the Invention
In accordance with a first aspect of the invention of there is provided a fixing apparatus for securing an edge of a partition of a room partitioning system to a track mounted in a surface of a room, the fixing apparatus comprising a clamping element arranged to receive at least a part of the edge of the partition, wherein the clamping element comprises: two clamping faces configurable between a closed position in which the edge of the partition is held in position between the clamping faces, and an open position in which the edge of the partition is released by the clamping faces; and a securing member configurable to move the clamping faces between the open and closed positions.
By having a fixing element that clamps the edge of the partition, a partition can be fixed in position on a track by moving the clamping faces of the clamping element of the fixing apparatus to the closed position. In the closed positon, the clamping faces can grip the edge of the partition, so can hold it in place by means of friction, without any screws or other more fixing being required. However, advantageously the partition can easily be removed from the track simply by moving the clamping faces to the open position, without any screws or the like needing to be -3 -removed. The partition can then subsequently be fixed in the same position again, or in another position with the same or other fixing apparatus.
The surface of the room may be a floor, wall or ceiling of a room, for example. The room may be an office space, a room within an office space such as a meeting room, or any other suitable space, such as a warehouse space.
The edge of the partition held in position between the clamping faces may be an edge profile of the partition, for example. The edge profile may be formed of metal, such as aluminium.
Preferably, clamping element comprises a shaft mounted on a first clamping face of the clamping faces. Preferably, the second clamping face of the clamping faces comprises a hole, and the shaft passes through the hole. The first clamping element may comprise multiple shafts, and the second clamping face multiple corresponding holes.
Preferably, a body portion of the securing member is mounted on the shaft on the opposite side of the second clamping face to the first clamping face. In this way, the second clamping face is held in place between the first clamping element and the securing member.
Preferably, the shaft is threaded, and the body portion of the securing member comprises a threaded hole in which the threaded shaft is engaged. In this way, the securing member can be moved up and down the threaded shaft by rotating the body portion of the securing member.
Advantageously, the body portion of the securing member is eccentrically located in a rotatable surround portion. This allows the clamping faces to be moved between the closed and open positions by rotating the rotatable surround portion around the non-moving body portion. As the body portion is eccentrically located in a rotatable surround portion, depending on the rotation of the rotatable surround portion, a different depth of rotatable surround portion will extend from the body portion in the direction of the second clamping face. In this way, the clamping faces can be moved to the closed position by rotating the rotatable surround portion so that it pushed the second clamping face towards the first clamping face, and to the open position by rotating the rotatable surround portion so it releases the second -4 -clamping face. Preferably in this case, the securing member comprises a lever to rotate the rotatable surround portion.
The fixing apparatus may comprise two or more clamping elements, each clamping element having two clamping faces and a securing member. The fixing apparatus may comprise more than two clamping elements. Where there is a plurality of clamping elements, they may be used to hold the fixing apparatus to the track as well as to the partition. Alternatively (whether there is one or a plurality of clamping elements), the fixing apparatus may be fixed to the track in another way, for example using screws or the like. Where there are two clamping elements, a first clamping element of the clamping elements may be orientated at a right-angle to the clamping element of the clamping elements. Alternatively, the clamping elements may be parallel, or in at other relative angles.
In accordance with a second aspect of the invention of there is provided a room partitioning system, comprising: at least one track in a surface of the room; at least one partition; wherein an edge of the at least one partition is fixed to the at least one track by a fixing apparatus as described above.
As described above, the fixing apparatus may comprise two or more clamping elements. In this case, the fixing apparatus may be fixed to the track using one or more of the two or more clamping elements. Alternatively and/or additionally, the edge of the at least one partition may be fixed to the track using two or more of the two or more clamping elements.
It will of course be appreciated that features described in relation to one aspect of the present invention may be incorporated into other aspects of the present invention. -5 -

Detailed Description
A fixing apparatus in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention is now described, with reference to Figures 2 to 4. The fixing apparatus 1 comprises two clamping elements Sand two securing members 5, as described in detail below. The fixing apparatus 1 comprises a support member 2, which is a rectangular strip of metal, bent in the middle into an "L" shape so as to have two rectangular faces oriented at 900 to each other. As can be seen in Figure 3a in particular, each face of the support member 2 comprises a central hole 2a and two outer holes 2b, in a line along the length of the support member.
The fixing apparatus 1 further comprises two flat clamping plates 3. Each flat clamping plate 3 has on one face a central threaded shaft 4a and two outer threaded shafts 4b. As can be seen in Figure 3a in particular, the central threaded shaft 4a is longer than the two outer threaded shafts 4b. (For clarity, the outer threaded shafts 4b are not shown in Figure 2.) The central threaded shaft 4a and two outer threaded shafts 4b are spaced correspondingly to the central hole 2a and two outer holes 2b of the rectangular faces of the support member 2, so that when a flat clamping plate 3 is positioned on a rectangular face of the support member 2, the central threaded shaft 4a extends through the central hole 2a, and the two outer threaded shafts 4b extend through the two outer holes 2b.
The flat clamping plates 3 are positioned on the "outside" of the support member 2, i.e. the flat clamping plates 3 are on the larger 270°-angle side of the support member 2, with the threaded shafts 4a and 4b extending through the holes 2a and 2b to the smaller 90°-angle side of the support member 2. Each flat clamping plate 3 and corresponding rectangular face of the support member 2 to which it is mounted together provide a clamping element 8 of the fixing apparatus 1, as described in detail later below.
Each securing members comprises a body portion 6, which is a cylindrical piece of metal with a threaded hole passing through its centre, oriented so that the -7 -ends of the threaded hole pass through the curved walls of the body portion 6. Each securing members further comprises a lever 7, comprising a handle 7a and a rotatable surround portion 7b in which the body portion 6 is located. As can be seen in particular in Figure 3c, each body portion 6 is located eccentrically in the rotatable surround portion 7b of the corresponding lever 7, so that depending on the position of the handle 7a, a greater or lesser part of the rotatable surround portion 7b extends between the body portion 6 and the rectangular face of the support member 2.
Figures 3c and 4 further show an edge profile 9 of a partition, fixed in position by the fixing apparatus 1. The edge profile 9 comprises extended portions 9a, which are located on either side between the rectangular face of the support member 2 and the flat clamping plate 3. (Figure 3c in fact shows two such edge profiles, one for each securing member 5.) In use, the flat clamping plates 3 are loosely secured to the support member 2 by means of nuts (not shown) screwed on the ends of the outer threaded shafts 4b. A partition is then positioned so that the extended portions 9a of its edge profile 9 are between a flat clamping plate 3 and the corresponding rectangular face of the support member 2. The body portion 6 of a securing members is then screwed onto the central threaded shaft 3a, with the handle 7a of the lever] positioned so that a lesser part of the rotatable surround portion 7b extends between the body portion 6 and rectangular face of the support member 2. This configuration can be seen in the vertical part of the fixing apparatus 1 shown in Figure 3c, where the clamping element 8 provided by the various parts is in an open position in which the edge profile 9 is not held in place by the clamping elements.
The distance between the body portion 6 of the securing member 5 and the flat clamping plate 3 can be reduced as far as desired by rotating the body portion 6 around the central threaded shaft 4a. The handle 7a of the lever 7 can then be pushed to be parallel with the rectangular face of the support member 2. This rotates the rotatable surround portion 7b so that a greater part of the rotatable surround portion 7b extends between the body portion 6 and rectangular face of the -8 -support member 2. In this way, the clamping element 8 provided by the various parts is moved to a closed position, in which the clamping face 3 and rectangular face of the support member 2 are forced together to hold the extended portions 9a of the edge profile 9 in position by friction. The use of the handle 7a allows the greater part of the rotatable surround portion 7b to be easily moved into position to provide a greater compressive force to hold the extended portions 9a in place. Further, subsequently the handle 7a can also easily be used to move the greater part of the rotatable surround portion 7b out of positon again, releasing the extended portions 9a so that the partition can easily be removed from the fixing apparatus.
The fixing apparatus 1 of the present embodiment is shown in Figures 5a and 5b, along with a section 50 of cover. As can be seen in Figure 5a, the fixing apparatus 1 is fixed to first and second edge profiles 9, which are at 90° each other. The section 50 of cover is arranged to be fixed to the edge profile 9, to provide a visually appealing finish. (In use, the cover would extend along the whole or most of the length of the edge profile 9, and it is for explanatory purposes only that only the section SO is shown in Figures Sa and 5b.) In Figure 5b, the section 50 of cover has been moved to conceal the fixing apparatus 1. It can be seen that when the handle 7a of the lever 7 is positioned such that the clamping element 8 is in the closed position, the handle 7a is within a channel of the edge profile 9, so that it fits underneath the section 50 of cover.
A fixing apparatus in accordance with a second embodiment of the invention is now described, with reference to Figures 6 to 8. The fixing apparatus 101 is similar to that of the first embodiment, but comprises two L-shaped support members 2 positioned in an upside-down T-shape. The vertical rectangular face of each support member 2 provides with a flat clamping plate 3 a clamping element 8, as in the first embodiment, that can be moved between an open and a closed position by means of a lever 7.
However, in contrast to the first embodiment, the horizontal rectangular faces of both support members 2 provide with a single extended flat clamping plate 103 two further clamping elements 108. As shown in Figure 7, the extended flat clamping plate 103 comprises two sets of threaded shafts, one corresponding to each support member 2, and each consisting of a central threaded shaft 104a and two out threaded shafts 104b. Each further clamping element 108 can again be moved between an open and a closed position by means of a lever 7.
Figure 8 shows the fixing apparatus 108 in use, and as can be seen it holds in position an edge profile 59 with four extended portions 109a, two held by either side of each of the clamping elements 108. Again as can be seen, both of the further clamping elements 108 hold in position different parts of extended portions of the other edge profile.
A fixing apparatus in accordance with a third embodiment of the invention is now described, with reference to Figures 9 and 10. The fixing apparatus 201 is similar to that of the first and second embodiments, but comprises a single flat extended support member 202. The single extended support member 202 provides, with an extended flat clamping plate 103, an extended clamping element 208. The single extended support member 202 comprises two sets of holes corresponding to the two sets of threaded shafts of the extended flat clamping plate 103, so that each set of holes consists of a central hole 202a and two outer holes 202b. Levers 7 mounted on the central threaded shafts 104a of the extended flat clamping plate 103 allow the extended clamping element 208 to be moved between an open and a closed position.
It can be seen that, advantageously, the fixing apparatuses of the embodiments described above share various components, simplifying manufacture of the different fixing apparatuses.
While the present invention has been described and illustrated with reference to particular embodiments, it will be appreciated by those of ordinary skill in the art that the invention lends itself to many different variations not specifically illustrated herein.
