Abstract

An automatic sleeving machine for placing a sleeve 5 around a pack, preferably a food tray. The sleeves include upper and lower walls joined by side walls. Conversion means, comprising a lower vacuum cup 65 for gripping the lower wall, converts a sleeve from a generally flat configuration by pulling the lower wall down until the sleeve is erected ready to receive a pack. Guide means comprising a pair of fixed guide plates constrain the side walls of the sleeve as the lower wall is pulled down. A conveyor comprising a lug-drive mechanism moves packs through the machine. There may also be an upper suction cup. The conveyor may comprise spaced lugs that rise up to push the pack along and the drive mechanism may be chain-driven. The conveyor may be an infeed conveyor with a gating device and there may be accelerating belts. The guides may have an upturned J-shape and one may be taller than the other, preferably about 10mm taller. There may also be an outfeed conveyor and/or a hopper 60. A method of placing food packs into sleeves is also claimed.
