Abstract
257,879. Silica Gel Corporation, (Assignees of Holden, E. C.). Sept. 4, 1925, [Convention date]. Gases, separating mixtures of.-An adsorbent for separating gaseous mixtures or for drying gases is arranged in spaced pervious layers disposed one above the other, alternate spaces between consecutive layers being open at one side and forming inlets for the gases and the other spaces being open at the other side and forming outlets. Adjacent layers of adsorbent may be disposed at an acute angle to one another and alternate layers may be parallel, and means, may be provided for reactivating and cooling the adsorbent. As shown in Fj<g>. 1, the adsorbent is arranged in spaced layers 10, the alternate spaces 12 forming inlets for the gases and the remaining spaces 13 forming outlets. The gases to be treated are preferably filtered at 35 and enter the adsorber through a valve 16, and after traversing the adsorbent they are withdrawn through a valve, 21 and a conduit 25; the valves 16, 21 may be power-operated and the conduit 25 may be connected to a pump. For continuous operation a number of units may be arranged in parallel, as shown in Fig. 2, the gases being treated in some of the units while in the others the adsorbent is being reactivated or cooled. For reactivating the adsorbent the hot combustion products of a cleaned combustible gas are employed. The combustible gas is cleaned in an electrostatic precipitator 26, Fig. 2, and is burnt in burners 28 heating a furnace 29, the combustion products passing into a flue 30, Fig. 1, which can be put into communication with the adsorbers by operating the valves 16; the combustion products may be diluted with air admitted through openings 34, and both the air so admitted and the air supplied for combustion are preferably filtered. During reactivation the valve. 21 is operated to close the conduit 25, the gases escaping through a conduit 31. The adsorbent may be cooled after reactivation, for example by air admitted through the openings 34. The apparatus is particularly intended for drying the blast air for blast furnaces.
