Abstract

A joiner’s tool comprising of two portable support mats and a portable saddle-shaped item. The mats can be used for kneeling or to support furniture/ timber (e.g. under a door as shown in figure 8), protecting it from physical stress or abrasions while being worked upon (e.g. chiselling hinge recesses). Each mat may be made of resilient ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foam and include an opening as a hand hold. Each mat may be 300mm wide by 400mm long by 20-25mm thick. The “saddle” can be used to support furniture/timber (e.g. a door against a door frame). The “saddle” may also include lugs (best seen in figures 2, 3 and 6). The lugs can interlock with the holes in the mats (see figures 5, 6) to work as a handle so all three parts can be carried together.

Description

Description
The present invention is directed to a door hanging set consisting of 2 x kneeling mats and saddle for use during joinery, carpentry and woodworking. The kneeling mat & saddle are especially well suited for use by joiners and others working on timber carpentry or joinery work.
When working on traditional wood joinery, particularly timber doors and door frames the joiner will need to manoeuvre the door to enable planing and chiselling the hinge recess. This often causes damage to the door and to the door frame when working due to a lack of protection.
To overcome these problems this invention proposes a cushioned protection for the door using the mats and saddle. The cushioning offered by the mats prevents the door being damaged when being placed on its side and chiselled. The saddle sits over the door hinge side offering protection to the door and also the door frame whilst working by acting as a protective barrier between the two.
The invention comprises of three pieces, two 'mats' to support the use and/or the object being worked on and a 'saddle' used to protect the object being worked on, and securing the three pieces together as a single pack with a carrying handle, the mats can also be utilised to protect timber of all types from surface damage during work.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig. 1 is a plan view of a mat in the form of a kneeling mat according to an example of the present invention; it shows front elevation and side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the saddle according to an example of the present invention. It shows the carrying handle.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view from the side of the saddle when opened and the saddle with carrying handle visible once folded.
Fig. 4 shows the front elevation of the mats, saddle and carrying handle when together as a whole unit.
Fig 5. Is a side elevation of the saddle, mats and carrying handle in a closed position as a whole unit showing the interlocking system when closed.
Fig 6. Is a side elevation of the saddle opening from the mats, showing the interlocking system when open.
Fig. 7 is a three dimensional drawing of the mats, saddle and carrying handle as a whole unit in the closed position.
Fig. 8 shows the example of the present invention in its working position during the example of door hanging. It is protecting the door, the doorframe and contact with the floor using the mats and saddle.
The outside profile of a mat and/or saddle according to the invention could be made to suit a desired profile - for example by the incorporation in or on a surface of it a company logo.
As shown in Fig. 1 there is provided a lightweight, portable, and durable support mat for use by an individual during woodworking and joinery activities.
Preferably, the mat has a width of 300 millimetres, a length of 400 millimetres, and a thickness of between 20 and 25 millimetres. Other mat dimensions are also possible and are within the scope of the invention. In a preferred embodiment, the mat is manufactured of rubber or other resilient material. A portion of the surface may be used to display branding, safety, or other information.
The handle may comprise one or more openings in proximity to one longitudinal edge of the mat through which a user's hand or one or more fingers may be inserted for carrying the mat without using the saddle; alternatively when transporting the invention as a whole the saddle lugs will insert into the openings interlocking the three components to one easily transported package. In a preferred embodiment, the central opening of the mats are offset to correspond to the relative locations of the interlocking saddle lugs when in a carrying position.
As the mat is manufactured of a resilient material, it provides a softer surface on which to stand, sit or kneel for a user or the item they are working on. As such, use of the mat will reduce friction between wood items being worked on and other external surfaces.
The mats and saddle are easily moved between job sites, as well as standing positions within a single job site. The mat, weighing only approximately 175 grams, is very easy to handle and transport. Its design also permits stacking of mats for transportation and storage. The saddle with two interlocking lugs and integrated carrying handle further add to the easability of transportation and storage of the set.
The saddle further comprises two protruding lugs which when inserted into the mats interlock and hold each mat in place to form the whole unit for the ease of handling, transportation and storage.
The rubber material of the mat & saddle permits its use in any weather, wet or dry, hot or cold. This capacity makes the mat of the present invention highly suitable for outdoor use.
As many possible embodiments may be made of the invention without departing from the scope of the claims, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is illustrative and not limiting, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that other variations of the preferred embodiment may also be practised without departing from the scope of the invention.
