Description

A Paint Colour Determining System
The present invention relates to systems and methods for determining a paint colour and optionally obtaining a desired quantity of that paint.
It is often desirable to match the colour of an existing paint, for example when repairing a damaged surface. However, colour matching paint is difficult if the original colour of the paint is not known.
It is known to take samples of a paint or colour to a paint centre in order to try to match the colour. However, it is often not possible when the coloured paint has been applied to a building surface, such as a wall or door for example.
Furthermore, samples of paint on cards or such like are often not representative of the colour when applied to a surface.
There therefore exists a need to be able to identify or determine the colour of a paint which has been applied to a surface and to match that colour to an existing paint product or to determine data relating to the colour so that a matching paint product can be obtained.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a paint colour determining system, the system comprising a colour determination apparatus, a mobile device containing a processor, a paint colour database and a remote server, wherein the colour determination apparatus is connected to the mobile device; the colour determination apparatus provides data relating to the determined colour to the mobile device; the mobile device accesses the paint colour database and the processor compares the data relating to the determined colour to the data stored on the paint colour database such that the processor identifies a paint colour stored on the colour database which corresponds to the colour of the surface; and the mobile device (i) transmits an order to the remote server for a predetermined quantity of paint having the identified colour; or (ii) requests data from the remote server relating to stores which stock paint having the identified colour, identifies the relevant stores from the remote server data and displays the location of the identified stores closest to the location of the mobile device.
As used herein, the term paint is intended to include all coloured coatings that may be applied to a target surface or substrate.
In an embodiment of the invention, the colour determination apparatus may be a barcode scanner, an RFID reader or a colour sensor.
It has been proposed that RFID chips may be embedded into a painted surface wherein the RFID chip includes data relating to the colour that has been applied to the surface. Thus, if it is subsequently desired to obtain details relating to the colour of the paint that was applied to the surface, the data on the RFID chip may be read by an appropriate RFID reader.
Additionally or alternatively, data relating to the paint colour may be stored in a barcode or similar data encoding system. The barcode may be stored in a convenient location and, if it is desired to obtain details relating to the colour of the paint that was applied to the surface, the relevant barcode may be read by a suitable barcode reader. In an embodiment of the invention, the barcode scanner forms part of the mobile device, for example a camera built into the mobile device may capture an image of the barcode and the processor may obtain data relating to the paint colour from the captured image of the barcode.
In a further alternative embodiment, the details of the colour of the paint that was applied to the surface may not have been recorded when the surface was painted. In such embodiments, it is necessary to obtain details of the paint directly using a colour sensor. Accordingly, the colour sensor may sense data relating to the colour of the surface when it is used to scan the surface.
The colour determination apparatus is suitably wirelessly connected to the mobile device, for example via a Bluetooth (RTM) or similar connection.
In an embodiment of the invention, the paint colour database is stored on the mobile device. Alternatively, the paint colour database may be stored on a remote paint colour server. In such embodiments, the mobile device is configured to remotely access the remote paint colour server.
The processor suitably forms part of the mobile device. Accordingly, the mobile device may process the data received from the colour determination apparatus, the paint colour database and/or the remote server.
The mobile device may be a mobile telephone, a tablet computer or a laptop computer. The mobile device suitably includes a GPS chip such that the location of the mobile device may be determined by the processor.
In embodiments in which the mobile device transmits as order to the remote server for the identified paint colour, the mobile device may include a user input via which a user inputs the desired quantity of the paint having the identified colour.
In certain embodiments of the invention, the processor may identify more than one paint colour that corresponds to the data relating to the determined colour. In such cases, the mobile device may display each of the identified paint colours and a user is able to select the desired paint colour manually from the identified colours.
The processor typically compares the data relating to the colour of the surface with data stored on the paint colour database and identifies one or more paint colours that are stored on the paint colour database in accordance with an algorithm that permits the identified paint colours to vary from the colour of the surface by a pre-determined differences in the colour parameters. In this way, the processor may identify more than one paint colour in the database that satisfies the comparison algorithm. However, if the processor is unable to identify a paint colour within the predefined parameters, the system may invite the user to create a custom paint colour based on the data relating to the colour of the surface. In such embodiments, the custom paint colour is not included on the paint colour database.
The custom paint colour may be based on any recognised colour definition system, such as RAL, NCS, BS, CMYK, etc. The mobile device may then transmit an order to the remote server for a predetermined quantity of custom paint having a colour which matches the data relating to the colour of the surface.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method for determining the colour of a paint, the method including providing a system as defined hereinabove in connection with the first aspect of the invention, obtaining data relating to the colour of a surface from the colour determination apparatus; transmitting the data to the processor; comparing the data relating to the colour of the surface to data stored on the paint colour database; identifying a paint colour stored on the database based on the data relating to the colour of the surface; and (i) transmitting an order to the remote server for a predetermined quantity of paint having the identified colour; or (ii) requesting data from the remote server relating to stores which stock paint having the identified colour, identifying from the remote server data relevant stores; and displaying the location of the identified stores closest to the location of the mobile device.
In an embodiment of the invention, the colour determination apparatus is a colour sensor and the step of obtaining data relating to the colour of the surface includes scanning the surface with the colour sensor.
In an alternative embodiment, the colour determination apparatus is a barcode reader and the step of obtaining data relating to the colour of the surface includes scanning a barcode relating to the paint colour with the barcode scanner. The barcode may be secured adjacent to the painted surface or it may be located remotely from the painted surface, for example in a maintenance handbook. In this embodiment of the invention, the method may include providing a barcode containing data relating to the paint colour, for example, when the surface is painted or repainted.
In a further alternative embodiment of the second aspect of the invention, the colour determination apparatus is an RFID reader and the step of obtaining data relating to the colour of the surface includes reading an RFID chip which contains data relating to the paint colour. The RFID chip may be embedded in the painted surface or it may be located remote from the painted surface. In this embodiment, the method may include providing an RFID chip containing data relating to the paint colour, for example, when the surface is painted or re-painted. The RFID chip may be embedded in the painted surface or it may be located remoted from the painted surface.
In embodiments in which the method includes the step of transmitting an order to the remote server for a predetermined quantity of paint having the identified colour, the method may include the step of inputting into the mobile device a desired quantity of paint having the identified colour.
In embodiments in which the processor identifies more than one paint colour that corresponds to the data relating to the determined colour and the mobile device displays each of the identified paint colours, the method may include selecting a desired paint colour from the displayed colours.
The method may further include the step of scheduling a time for a painter to apply the paint having the identified colour to the painted surface. This step may be based on the location of the mobile device and/or on a database of available painters in the location of the mobile device.
The skilled person will appreciate that the features described and defined in connection with the aspects of the invention and the embodiments thereof may be combined in any combination, regardless of whether the specific combination is expressly mentioned herein. Thus, combinations of optional features described and discussed herein are within the scope of the invention.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic representation of a first embodiment of a paint ordering system according to the first aspect of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a schematic representation of a second embodiment of a paint ordering system according to the first aspect of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of a paint colour determining system 2 for determining data relating to a paint which has been applied to a surface 4, the system 2 comprising a hand-held colour sensor 6, such as a Nix Mini Colour Sensor available from Nix Sensor Limited of Ontario, Canada, and a mobile device 8 such as a smart phone. The colour sensor 6 connects wirelessly to the smart phone 8 via a paired Bluetooth (RTM) connection such that data from the colour sensor 6 is sent wirelessly to the smart phone 8.
A processor (not shown) in the smart phone 8 processes the data received from the colour sensor relating to the colour of paint on the surface 4. The smart phone 8 then accesses wirelessly a first remote server 10, which includes a first database that stores data relating to a plurality of paint colours and the processor compares the data received from the colour sensor 6 with the data stored in the first database of the first server 10 based on an algorithm stored on the processor to identify one or more paint colours which correspond to the data received from the colour sensor 6. Data relating to the or each identified paint colour is then transmitted from the first server 10 to the smart phone 8.
The processor processes the data received from the first remote server 10 relating to the or each identified paint colours and displays on a display of the smart phone 8 a representation of the or each paint colour. The user then selects the most appropriate colour from those displayed.
The smart phone 8 then wirelessly accesses a second remote server 12, which includes a second database that stores data relating to stores which stock the selected colour, their geographical location and their stock levels. The smart phone 8 transmits its location details based on a GPS chip contained within the smart phone 8 to the second remote server 12 and the second remote server 12 identifies a store which is nearest to the location of the smart phone 8 and which has a stock of the identified colour of paint. The data relating to the or each identified store is then transmitted from the second remote server 12 to the smart phone 8.
The smart phone 8 then gives the user an option to schedule a skilled painter to apply the identified colour of paint to the surface 4. If the user exercises this option, the smart phone 8 then accesses a third remote server 14, transmits details of the identified colour of paint required to the third remote server 14 and requests a scheduled appointment to have the paint applied by the skilled painter. A confirmation of the scheduled appointment and the work order is then transmitted back to the smart phone 8 from the third remote server 14.
The skilled person will appreciate that the first, second and third remote servers 10, 12, 14 may be the same or different servers. In other words, they may be different parts of the same server or they may separate servers.
Figure 2 shows a second embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, a paint colour determining system 102 for determining data relating to a paint which has been applied to a substrate 104 comprises an RFID chip reader 106 and a tablet computer 108. RFID chip readers are well known in the art and will not be described in detail herein. The RFID chip reader 106 connects wirelessly to the tablet computer 108 via a paired Bluetooth (RTM) connection such that data from the RFID chip reader 106 is sent wirelessly to the tablet computer 108.
When the substrate 104 was originally painted or re-painted, an RFID chip 116 was embedded in the substrate 104, below the surface. The embedded RFID chip 116 is read by the RFID chip reader 106 in the usual way and data from the RFID chip 116 relating to the colour of paint that was applied to the substrate 104 is transmitted from the RFID chip reader 106 to the tablet computer 108.
A processor (not shown) in the tablet computer 108 processes the data received from the RFID chip reader 106 relating to the colour of paint on the substrate 104. The tablet computer 108 then accesses wirelessly a first remote server 110, which includes a first database that stores data relating to a plurality of paint colours and the processor compares the data received from the RFID chip reader 106 with the data stored in the first database of the first remote server 110 to identify one or more paint colours which correspond to the data received from the RFID chip reader 106 according to an algorithm stored in the processor. The data relating to the one or more identified paint colours is then transmitted from the first remote server 110 back to the tablet computer 108. The processor then processes the data received from the first remote server 110 relating to the or each identified paint colours and displays on a display of the tablet computer 108 a representation of the or each paint colour. The user then identifies the colour which most closely matches the colour of the paint on the substrate 104.
Once the desired colour of paint has been identified, the user is given the option to select the quantity of paint that is required. The user inputs the desired quantity of the paint into the tablet computer 108, the tablet computer 108 then accesses wirelessly a second remote server 112 which includes a paint ordering system. The tablet computer 108 transmits details of the identified paint and the desired quantity to the paint ordering system of the second remote server 112 and an order is placed for the desired quantity of the identified paint. A confirmation of the order is transmitted from the second remote server 112 to the tablet computer 108.
The ordered paint may then be collected by the user or delivered to the user.
