Abstract

A handheld device for detecting a partial discharge event 10. The device comprises: a first probe 12 having a first partial discharge sensor 14 disposed within and a second probe 20 having a second partial discharge sensor disposed 26 within. The second probe is electrically connected to the first probe by a connecting cable 24. The first and second probes comprise means for measuring a difference in time of arrival of a detected partial discharge event. Preferably, the difference in time of arrival detected at the first and second probes is graphically represented. Preferably, the location of the partial discharge event of a substation asset is found. The handheld device may further comprise a filter, logarithmic amplifier, comparator, trigger and processing means whereby the comparator, precedence means and processing means are disposed in the first probe. Also a timing circuit for determining the time difference between two pulses is disclosed comprising: a resettable capacitive time circuit electrically connected to a constant current source across a voltage supply, a first switch and second switch, and a first logic input and a second logic input.
