Abstract
The seating device 99 is used in row-type seating, and has a support 100, 105, pivot, seat 300 and back-rest 200. The seat 300 and back-rest 200 have ventilation holes, which may reduce build-up of sweat on a user. The seat 300 or back-rest 200 may have a frame 9, 2 supporting a meshed surface 8, 1, such as woven wire. The support may be an elongate bar 105 and may include side brackets 100 having indentations 5 for receipt of the bar 105. The seat 300 may be pivoted on the support 100, 105 and have a pivot brake 10 that travels in a channel 12. The back-rest 200 may have two extending pins to either side of the support. The ventilation holes may be arranged non-uniformly. The row-type seating may be for audience of live events in a stadium where the seating device 99 may be used for prolonged periods.
Description
A SEATING DEVICE
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a seating device, in particular a seating device for use in a row-type seating arrangement, such as a stadium.
Background
Increasing interest in mass participation events is driven by a desire on the part of the audience to experience live events as well as a need to bring in revenue for the artists or sportspeople.
This has led in many societies to increased numbers of such events. This is an enjoyable and welcome occurrence for many.
However longer events can be uncomfortable for some, with seating being typically uncomfortable and prone to lack of ventilation, making for sweaty and humid conditions for prolonged periods of seating.
Prior Art
CN 204 970 336 (DUAN et al) discloses a simply constructed a stadium chair: comprising a concrete base, a seat plate, a backrest, air-through holes, seat plate bracket, backrest bracket, folded flexible push rod, a connecting rod, connecting plates, characterized in sitting in the seat plate bracket plates mounted on top of, airthrough holes, there are provided a seat plate bracket mounted on a concrete base by means of an expansion bolt above, with the folded seat plate bracket, backrest bracket connecting plate is connected, a folding back support and the connecting rod is connected, with the flexible push rod connecting rod, the connecting plate is connected.
US 2011 0 193 393 (WELSH) discloses a backrest for outdoor chairs including stadium seats, said backrest comprising a first plurality of forward facing openings formed in the front of said backrest, and a second plurality of protrusions formed on the front facing inter-opening portions of said backrest, said openings reducing the area of said backrest front on which sunlight can be incident and said protrusions reducing the area of contact of said backrest with a sitter. A backrest for a seat is disclosed having a first plurality of forwardly facing openings arranged in an array and second plurality of protrusions arranged in a second array. The arrays are rectangular with substantially equal spacing so that the openings and protrusions are inter-mingled. The arrangement reduces solar heating of the unoccupied seat and allows air flow and perspiration drainage of the occupied seat.
CN 261 4547 (GONG) discloses a row seat which belongs to the furniture field, in particular to a row seat with multifunctional heat-dissipating holes on the long row seat. The row seat comprises a seat leg, a seat board and a back-rest, wherein the lower portion of the seat leg is supported with the ground surface and the upper portion is connected with the seat board and the back-rest. And the through-holes are arranged in the seat board and the back-rest which are connected and formed into an integral body. The utility model has simple structure, excellent ventilation performance and convenient operation, and the long row seat can be provided with the settee cushion in accordance with the requirements voluntarily, thereby the row seat can be widely applied to various situations.
The present invention arose in order to overcome problems suffered by existing devices.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a seating device for use in a rowtype seating arrangement comprising: a support; a pivot; a seat mounted substantially horizontally on the support in a use position; a back-rest mounted substantially vertically to the support in a use position; wherein the seat and backrest are arranged with a plurality of ventilation holes.
The device is arranged to be located in a row or series of such devices, wherein the support may comprise a stadium structure or a means of securement in a stadium style structure. For example the support may comprise a bracket to secure to an elongate bar or similar linear securement means, so as to allow for placement and 5 securement of multiple such devices for a linear seating arrangement in a stadium or similar. Accordingly the present invention comprises a linear arrangement of devices and associated support therefor.
In some embodiments first and second pivot pins may be located respectively 10 connected to said seat along a common pivot axis at a rearward end of each side of said seat section.
In some embodiments first and second support brackets extend from each side of the support, each of said first and second brackets having an opening which receives a 15 respective one of said first and second pivot pins such that said back-rest is pivotal relative to said seat.
The seat and backrest may be mutually located about the pivot which defines a pivot axis. In other embodiments the backrest may be fully integrated with or secured to 20 the support. The seat may comprise pivot pins into the support, for example wherein a first pin comprises discontinuous pivots, and second pins comprise pivoting stops in one or both directions of pivot.
The seat may pivot from a first substantially horizontal use position to a second 25 substantially vertical storage position.
The support may interact with the structure through connection to a supporting basal portion, which basal portion may comprise an elongate bar or similar.
The backrest may pivot from a first substantially vertical use position to a second substantially horizontal storage position.
In some embodiments the pivot comprises pivoting means for automatically pivoting said back-rest section about said common pivot axis in the absence of a force 35 holding said back-rest section in said use position, said pivoting means comprising a spring element mounted between and bearing against one or both said seat and said backrest.
The device may be located for installation on a tier of a stadium and the like, including in combination comprising a series of identical devices evenly spaced-apart on the stadium tier structure.
The ventilation holes may be evenly spaced around the seat and the backrest.
The ventilation holes may be arranged for maximal ventilation properties envisaged in relation to a standard usage. For example in some embodiments the ventilation holes may be concentrated in particular areas on the seat of backrest. The seat may comprise concentrated areas of ventilation holes centrally and/or frontally, such as between a user’s legs in use.
In this way the device of the present invention provides a seating option to decrease sweat build-up during those exciting times.
In some embodiments the backrest is inclined from vertical for comfort purposes and may include a non-planar surface with indentations to accommodate the user’s shape.

In some embodiments the seat and/or backrest may comprise a peripheral frame, and an intermediate surface. This surface may be provided as a perforated mesh so as to define a plurality of ventilation holes.
In some embodiments the surface may be comprised by a flexible surface, which may be comprised of a flexible material and/or mounting. For example in some embodiments the surface may comprise a plurality of elastomeric or non-elastic wires that are weaved together and may allow internal movement. For example in some embodiments the surface may be comprised by woven wire. In other examples the surface may comprise an inelastic thermoplastic or metal grid, with elastic mounting to the frame.

Detailed Description of Figures
With reference to the figures there is generally shown an embodiment of a seating device 99 for use in a row-type seating arrangement comprising: a support 100; a pivot 11; a seat 300 mounted substantially horizontally on the support 100 in a use position; a back-rest 200 mounted substantially vertically to the support 100 in a use position: wherein the seat 300 and back-rest 200 are arranged with a plurality of ventilation holes.
The device 99 is shown as a single chair on the elongate bar 105 as a stadium seating arrangement, where it may be envisaged that multiple devices may be installed on the bar 105. The device may friction fit onto the bar 105, whereby the supports 100 may comprise indentations 5 with resilient material coating, or using adhesive, welding or bonding.
With particular reference to the figures there is shown an embodiment of the device 99 comprising a structure basal portion comprising in the pictured embodiment an elongate rectangular section bar 105.
The support 100 comprises two side supports. The supports comprise rectangular three-sided indentations 5 lowermost and an inclined lower support 6, a forward extending circular pivot support 7 and a reclined upper support 4.
The backrest is secured to the upper support 4, and reclines backwards from the pivot support 7 as the upper support 4 does.
The lower support 6 extends the pivot support 7 forwards of the basal portion 105.
The pivoting means is provided between the seat 300 and the pivot support 7. The seat 300 is secured to the pivot support 7 towards its rear edge on its sides by two extending pivot points 10, 11 on each side. One of these pivot points comprises a pivot 11, where the rearmost of the pivot points 10 comprises a pivot brake.
The pivot points 10,11 are short extensions from the sides of the seat. The rearmost pivot brake 10 is arranged to run in use in an arcuate channel 12 in the inner surface of the pivot supports 7, where the pivot 11 is located in a central perforation 13 on the inner face of the pivot support 7.
The seat 300 comprises a peripheral frame 9 and a seat surface 8, which surface 8 is formed of a mesh. The support 100 is powder-coated steel, and the seat and backrest are thermoplastics with a powder-coated steel frame 9. The surface may be powder-coated steel mesh.
The backrest 200 further comprises a peripheral frame 2 and a backrest surface 1, which surface 1 is formed of a wire mesh.
The wires may be plastic coated steel, or may be solid polymer or thermoplastics. The surface may therefore provide a flexible surface, subject to movement under pressure from the seat user’s weight. This may make for more comfort.
In other embodiments the surface is relatively rigid and comprises a perforated sheet, so as to minimise any possibility of the woven wires becoming unwoven or otherwise irretrievably damaged.
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of invention as defined by the claims, in particular but not solely combination of features of described embodiments.
Claims
Claims (10)
1. A seating device for use in a row-type seating arrangement comprising: a support; a pivot; a seat mounted substantially horizontally on the support in a use position; a back-rest mounted substantially vertically to the support in a use position; wherein the seat and back-rest are arranged with a plurality of ventilation holes.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the seat comprises a frame and surface.
3. A device according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the back-rest comprises a frame and surface.
4. A device according to claim 2 or 3 wherein the surface comprises a woven wire.
5. A device according to any preceding claim wherein the support comprises an elongate bar.
6. A device according to claim 5 wherein the support comprises two side brackets with indentations for receipt of the bar.
7. A device according to any preceding claim wherein the seat is pivoted on the support.
8. A device according to claim 7 wherein the pivot comprises a pivot brake travelling in a channel.
9. A device according to any preceding claim wherein the back-rest comprises two extending pins to either side of the support.
10. A device according to any preceding claim where the ventilation holes are arranged not uniform across the seat and/or back-rest.
