Abstract

A smart bin can scan and identify used recyclable packaging eg by scanning a bar code. It can also weigh the packaging and sort it into the right receptacle. It can then refund the user with funds in an escrow account. The smart bin could be connected to the internet via the internet of things and can use a blockchain application to communicate with the escrow account. The smart bin could be powered by an integrated lithium ion battery which could be recharged by an integral photo voltaic solar cell. The smart bin could be modular for ease of emptying and maintenance by low skilled workers.

Description

Description
This invention relates to a device that remunerates customers of recyclable packaging with a small fee, when the empty package is recycled using a Smart Bin.
Current recycling approaches rely on the importance an individual places on the ethics of recycling from an environmental standpoint. ‘Reverse vendor’ recycling points at supermarkets necessitate the large accumulation of empty packaging to make a journey to recycle at the local shop worth while. The Smart Bin aims to make the act of recycling and remuneration as easy as disposing of litter in a conventional street bin.
The technology that aims to do this requires two important features; automated payments (smart contracts), and the instant settlement of micro-payments. This is where a technology such as the lightning network, a second layer technology on the Bitcoin blockchain would facilitate such transactions. A lightning application (LApp) dedicated to the execution of smart contracts would keep track of purchased recyclable products, and pay back a small fee once recycled. (See here for an article on LApps: https://medium.com/coinmonks/intro-to-lightning-network-aDDSIapps-b548c96ec13f).
The added fee that would be remunerated would be an opt-in decision of packaging manufacturers. It could be argued that companies that charged a small percentage of the product as an added fee (that would be repaid when recycled in a smart bin) would attract the custom of more conscientious consumers.
The LApp could be run on a $30 raspberry pi, with enough capacity to handle the inputs and outputs needed to scan, weigh and register the packaging deposited into the correct container, then release the funds held in escrow in a smart contract returning the funds to the customer’s wallet. (There would be five containers/ ‘modules’ for each recycling type including plastic, aluminium, glass, cardboard/paper and general waste).
The design will be described by way of example with the accompanying CAD images.
Figure 1 shows the scanner (1) that will detect the product by a specific UPC (universal product code). Whereby information will be sent to the Lightning App preparing the funds to be released back to the customer.
Figure 2 shows the screen (1) which will display information about the product including the amount to be reimbursed to the customer’s digital wallet. This will be powered by the PV cells on top (2) so the bin is a self powered, stand alone system.
Figure 3 shows the ‘main lid’ (1) that will rotate on a central axis (by a DC motor powered by batteries) and will move the packaging over the correct waste module. The ‘tray’ (2) that makes the floor on which the litter is placed then moves until the hole in the tray moves around to the correct compartment and the packaging falls in. Small sensors could be placed in each waste module (3) to detect the packaging has fallen in and execute the smart contract to release the funds held in escrow back to the customer’s wallet.

Claims (4)

1. A Smart Bin that can scan, identify, weigh, dispose of recyclable packaging in the correct container/ module, then remunerate the small fee held in escrow back to the customer.
2. A Smart Bin according to claim 1 that is connected to the internet as an loT device and can communicate with the necessary blockchain application.
3. A Smart Bin according to claim 1 that is powered by a PV cell and stores access energy in Lithium Ion batteries to be used when needed.
4. A Smart Bin according to all previous claims that is modular and can be emptied and maintained by low skilled workers.
