Abstract
A composition for application to the skin of a human, comprising a mixture of: a sun protection composition to filter UV radiation from the sun; and an anti-inflammatory composition for the prevention or treatment of acne is provided. A topical composition comprising a cream or oil having a component that filters UV radiation from the sun in combination with an anti-bacterial and/ or anti-inflammatory component for the prevention or treatment of skin pore infections causing spots and/ or acne is also outlined. A medicated preparation for application to human skin comprising a combination of: a sun screen composition having an active UV filtering compound; and an acne prevention or treatment composition is also provided.
Description
SUN PROTECTION AND ACNE TREATMENT AND PREVENTION
COMPOSITION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION [0001] The present invention relates to a sun protection and acne treatment and prevention composition.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION [0002] Teenage and adolescent adults and some unfortunate older adults can suffer from acne causing uncomfortable and sore spots to break out on their skin, particularly on their face, neck and in some cased their back. This is a cause of great discomfort and embarrassment to the affected individuals.
[0003] The demographic group that typically suffer from acne are the same group that like to expose themselves to sunlight to tan their skin. Often such individuals enjoy prolonged periods of exposure, or “sun bathing”. The conditions experienced by the skin during sun exposure can include an increase in sweating due to the heat, leading to an increase in excretions from the sebaceous glands into the skin pores. This increase in secretions together with dirt in the environment is an ideal environment for the bacteria that cause acne to thrive.
[0004] Responsible individuals that sunbath will apply a sun protection composition to their skin to reduce the effect of harmful UV rays on the skin. Such sun protection compositions are often oil based and will act to block up the pores and further attract dirt and bacteria. Hence, sun protection compositions can further initiate or aggravate an acne outbreak. For this reason, many adolescent adults avoid using sun protection compositions or at least limit their use. The lack of UV protection can lead to significant skin damage. The alternative for these individuals is to protect their skin against UV damage and suffer from inflammation and acne.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [0005] The present invention aims to overcome the deficiencies in the prior art compositions and to provide a composition that can provide UV protection without causing inflammation of the skin pores and acne.
[0006] One aspect of the invention provides a composition for application to the skin of a human, the composition comprising a mixture of a sun protection composition to filter harmful UV radiation from the sun; and an anti-inflammatory composition for the prevention or treatment of acne.
[0007] Another aspect provides a topical composition comprising a cream or oil having a component that filters harmful UV radiation from the sun in combination with an antibacterial and/or anti-inflammatory component for the prevention or treatment of skin pore infections causing spots and/or acne.
[0008] A further aspect provides a medicated preparation for human skin application comprising a combination of a sun screen composition having an active UV filtering compound; and an acne prevention or treatment composition.
Detailed Description [0009] Embodiments of the invention provide a composition comprising a sun protections compound in conjunction with an anti-inflammatory or antibacterial compound.
[0010] Sun protection compositions are required to provide a sun filtering effect that is graded according to a sun protection factor (SPF). The SPF rating is higher for composition s that provide a increased blocking or absorption of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Due to the depletion of the ozone layer and the increased intensity of UV radiation, sun protection compositions having a higher SPF rating e.g. SPF 50 are now readily available.
[0011] Also, the authorities are making efforts to warn and educate people about the harmful effects of UV radiation on the skin. People are being urged to stay out of the skin or use a sun protection composition (sun cream or a sun screen).
[0012] Due to the negative effect on the skin of increasing the chances of an acne outbreak or making an outbreak worse, the health advice is often ignored by teenagers and adolescent adults. The comprising a sun protections compound in conjunction with an antiinflammatory or antibacterial compound will remove the excuse for such individuals not to use the composition as a sun screen. Also, the positive effect of preventing or treating acne will encourage its use to the obvious benefit of the individuals.
[0013] The sun protection composition can comprise a cream or oil having any appropriate SPF factor e.g. 10 to 50. The sun protection composition can provide a filter or blocking effect for UVA and UVB, or primarily UVB, since many conventional sun protection compositions have limited filtering or blocking capability for UVA.
[0014] The added active ingredient to prevent or treat acne can comprise a suitable antiinflammatory or antibacterial composition in an appropriate concentration e.g. 1% to 10%. The active ingredient and the sun protection composition are mixed such that they combine in any physical or chemical form in a manner that does not degrade the effect of each other. In other words, the addition of the active ingredient to the sun protection composition should not significantly degrade the sun protection factor of the sun protection composition and the sun protection composition should not change the medical or pharmaceutical activity of the active ingredient significantly.
[0015] In one embodiment, the antibacterial or anti-inflammatory active ingredient in selected to be resistant to the levels of visible and UV radiation from the sun and resistant to degradation due to the temperature ranges experienced on the skin surface during sun exposure of an individual.
[0016] In one embodiment, the composition is also substantially waterproof to reduce loss of the composition on the skin during exposure to water e.g. swimming or sweating.
[0017] The composition can be in a form that can be applied by hand (e.g. a cream or oil) or as a spray.
[0018] It will be readily understood to those skilled in the art that various other changes in the details which have been described in order to explain the nature of the inventive subject matter may be made without departing from the principles and scope of the inventive subject matter as expressed in the subjoined claims.
