Abstract
A weight reducing attachment device iv for spectacles comprises a posterior counterweight attached to a sidepiece i by insertion into a soft tube ii located at the downward bend of the sidepiece. An optional small elastic compressible washer located in the hinge area (v, fig 6) may be needed to correct loose side pieces in order to achieve a secure fit.
Description
A Spectacle Temple Extension for a more Secure fit
Introduction and Purpose
The applicant was granted a spectacle counterweight attachment patent on 18th August 2008 GB 2444807. Although the weight on the wearer's nose was reduced, the appliance still would slip especially when the sidepieces were not snug on the sides of the wearer's head.
This new application remedies this problem with much less weight at the tip ends behind the wearer's ears and contacts the wearers head much lower down.
Description
This device is configured as an S shape with a small tip end formed to easily slide through the hair just behind the ears above the mastoid prominence and just behind it. This area is below the rearward cranium prominence so the device cannot go upwards consequently very little weight is needed at the ends as shown.
The result is an unobtrusive attachment which usually is not visible under the hair and it is very small as compared to earlier larger more massive heavier counter balances.
Various views are shown from the front, sides and rear showing how it is attached by sliding it into a rubber like tube in the position shown much as in the patent granted and referred to above. However unlike that patent the contact area is much lower at the bottom of the head and the weight is far less in the order of only 4 to 6 grams and contacting just above and posterior to the mastoid area.
It is possible to eliminate up to 100% of spectacle front weight if necessary for special medical needs such as necrosis of nasal tissue from prolonged nasal pressure. That can be done by increasing the weight of the metal posterior tip (iv) and or lengthening it. The bend configuration and downwards growing hair combine to cause the device above described to only go downwards.
The above combined factors combine to decrease nasal pressure of the spectacle nose pads to any desired amount which is needed.
The materials used are presently spring steel with a small cast metal tip, alternately it could be moulded of even lighter springy plastic with or without a metal cover or embedment at a lower cost and would work almost as well.
A major problem has almost been that many spectacle wearers have loose temples which are not snugly fitting on the sides of the head. The simple solution is to roll a small compressible rubber like washer over the temple side pieces forwards into the hinge itself as shown. This is immediately effective on the larger hinges of plastic spectacles. Metal frames with smaller hinges must have their frame adjusted by their optician or optometrist. This is often difficult to accomplish by even them on plastic frames and so a washer like section from a rubber tube or even a small rubber band will work but would not be as long lasting as the washer.
Washers will work equally well with either corner or side hinges.
This invention will work even with loose spectacles but is much more effective as explained above with the washers in the hinges of plastic eyewear as shown in Figure 6.
Drawing explanations
Figure 1: Side piece (temple wearer) (i) with a rubbery neoprene like tube, (ii) positioned above the ears at the bend area (iii) of said sidepieces and the extension attachment, (iv) in position showing the contact area on the wearers head above and rearwards near the mastoid prominence (vi)
Figure 2: shows the rearview of the attachments (iv) slipped into the back ends of the tubes above referred to.
Figure 3: shows a view from the posterior of a spectacle structure with attachments inserted into tubes (iv) at the outer sides of temple members (not next to the head) in the above position on the side pieces.
Figure 4: side perspective showing insertion area of attachment spectacle extensions into tubing (ii) at the down bend of temple members (iv).
Figure 5: front view spectacle perspective showing attachments (iv)
Figure 6: A pre-assembly view of with component rubber washers and how they are rolled from the rear into the hinge area of plastic spectacle frames before tubing (ii) is positioned at the temple down bend. The washers preferably may have a star shaped interior as does the tubing (ii) for better elasticity and gripping action. The side view of the spring portion shows a sharp anterior small bend to prevent loss from sliding rearwards during use.

Claims (4)
1. A springy spectacle frontal weight reducing attachment device with a posterior counter weight as described attached to the temple sidepieces by insertion into a soft tube located at the downward bend of above sidepieces to achieve up to 100% complete weight reduction and a secure snug fit of spectacles with great simplicity of instalment.
2. Claim 1 as above in combination with small rubber like washers which fit into the hinge areas for wearers with side pieces that are not snugly fitted against the sides of the wearers head, which are needed to provide a fulcrum contact on the sides of the head and ears
3. Claims 1 and 2 with materials used in the devices which may be of metal, plastic, or a combination of metal and plastic.
4. Claims 1 - 3 as above wherein the devices are incorporated into the sidepiece spectacle structure itself by building them into the side pieces as an integral part of said side pieces thus making no side piece attachments necessary.
