Abstract
A protective film and method of protecting an article from abrasion etc comprising sticking to the article the protective film comprising a top layer, backed by a self-adhesive layer and a base layer backed by a further self-adhesive layer or a cling layer. The two protective layers being providing with contrasting colours such that when damage is received to the top layer the contrasting base layer is made visible as a visual indication of damage. The top layer may be applied to the base layer under tension so that when damaged the top layer relaxes around the damaged area and pulls back to expose the base layer. The top and/or base layers may be of polyolefin, the adhesive layers may be rubber, acrylic, silicone or ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). The film may be used for protecting vehicle body parts and shaped as such. Also included is a claim to articles protected by the film.
Description
Protective Films
This invention relates to protective films and in particular to such films for securing to articles such as vehicle bumpers or vehicle parts to protect them from abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact damage as they are transported from the part manufacturer to a vehicle assembly line and can remain in position until the vehicle reaches the vehicle dealership. The invention also provides a method of protecting an article using such a protective film.
Whilst such protective films exist it can be difficult to identify if damaging contact has occurred as this may not be clearly evident from marks on the protective film. This can lead to minor imperfections not being spotted by an end of line inspection leading to vehicles being delivered with minor damage creating poor brand image, costly reworking and warranty claims.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a protective film which makes the identification of the above damaging contacts much easier and a method of protecting an article using such a protective film.
Thus according to the present invention there is provided a method of protecting an article against abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact damage comprising sticking to the article a multi-layer protective film comprising a top layer backed by a first non-permanent self-adhesive layer and a base layer of contrasting colour to the top layer bonded non permanently to the top layer by the first selfadhesive layer and provided on its other side with a second self-adhesive layer or a nonadhesive cling layer for securing the protective film to the article to be protected, the top layer being arranged when damaged by abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact to reveal the contrasting base layer and thus provide a clear indication of areas of the article which may have sustained damage.
Such a method is particularly suitable for the protection of vehicle body parts as described above.
During manufacture the top layer of the protective film may be applied to the base layer under tension so that if the top layer is penetrated the top layer relaxes around the penetrated area and is pulled back to expose the contrasting base layer.
The present invention also provides a multi-layer protective film for use in the above method, the film comprising a top layer backed by a first non-permanent self-adhesive layer and a base layer of contrasting colour to the top layer and bonded non permanently to the top layer by the first self-adhesive layer and provided on its other side with a second self-adhesive layer or a non-adhesive cling layer for securing the protective film to an article to be protected from abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact damage, the top layer being arranged when damaged by abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact to reveal the contrasting base layer and thus provide a clear indication of areas of the article which may have sustained damage.
During manufacture the top layer of the protective film may be applied to the base layer under tension so that if the top layer is penetrated the top layer relaxes around the penetrated area and is pulled back to expose the contrasting base layer.
The top layer and/or the base layer may be made from polyolefin film.
The two adhesive layers may be made from rubber, acrylic, silicone or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) non-permanent pressure sensitive material. The non-adhesive cling layer may use microsuction, static charge or other similar technology to cling to the article to which the protective film is applied.
The invention also provides a multi-layer self-adhesive protective film for protecting an article from abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact damage, the film comprising a top layer backed by a first non-permanent self-adhesive layer and a base layer of contrasting colour to the top layer and bonded non permanently to the top layer by the first self-adhesive layer and provided on its other side with a second selfadhesive layer or a non-adhesive cling layer for securing the protective film to the article to be protected from abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact damage, during manufacture the top layer of the protective film is applied to the base layer under tension so that if the top layer is penetrated the top layer relaxes around the penetrated area and is pulled back to expose the contrasting base layer and thus provide a clear indication of areas of the article which may have sustained damage.
The invention further provides a protective film in accordance with the above paragraphs for use in the protection of vehicle body parts, the film being shaped for sticking onto the body parts.
The invention still further provides an article protected against abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact by a multi-layer protective film as described above or by a method as described above.
When the protective film as described above is for use on vehicle body parts the film may conveniently be shaped for sticking onto the parts which may comprise vehicle bumpers, wings, bonnets, doors, roofs, boots and other body parts.
The protective film of the present invention can also be used to protect other vehicle parts such as front and rear lighting lens, wheel arch spats, alloy wheels and indeed any application where there is a need of surface protection with a high risk of damage from handling by multiple parties. Non automotive applications are also possible especially with consumer goods such as, for example, the protection of white goods, electronic goods and furniture. Other examples include sensitive components, materials and food goods where any damaging contact with the item needs to be identified immediately.
One embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:Figure 1 shows a diagrammatic cross section through a protective film for the protection of vehicle body parts.
Referring to the drawing, this shows a multi-layer protective film 10 having a top or outer layer 11 backed by a first non-permanent self-adhesive layer 12 and a base layer 13 of contrasting colour to the top layer and bonded non-permanently to the top layer by the first self-adhesive layer 12. The other side of base layer 13 is provided with a second self-adhesive layer or a non-adhesive cling layer 14 for securing the protective film to an article 15 to be protected from abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact damage.
The top layer 11 is preferably arranged when damaged by abrasion, light impact and other forms of surface contact to reveal the contrasting base layer 13 and thus provide a clear indication of areas of the article 15 which may have sustained damage. Typically the top layer will be white or as light colour and the base layer will be red, blue or green. This could be reversed with the base layer being white or light in colour to provide the contrast. Preferably the top layer 11 of the film is applied to the base layer 13 under tension so that if the top layer is penetrated the top layer relaxes around the penetrated area and is pulled back to expose the contrasting base layer 13.
Such a protective film is particularly suitable for the protection of vehicle body parts such as, for example, painted vehicle bumpers as they are transported from the bumper manufacturer to a vehicle assembly line and can remain in position until the vehicle reaches the vehicle dealership. In such an application the protective film can be pre-cut making it suitably shaped for sticking onto vehicle bumpers or other vehicle body parts. The top layer and/or the base layer may be made from polyolefin film. Typically these layers are 0.025 to 0.1mm thick.
The two adhesive layers can conveniently be made from rubber, acrylic, silicone or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) non-permanent pressure sensitive material. Alternatively, a non-adhesive microsuction or static charge layer may be used to hold the protective film on the article which is being protected. This first adhesive layer allows the top layer to peel off the base layer when potentially damaging contact occurs. The second adhesive layer or non-adhesive cling layer also allows the protective film to easily removed from the article it is protecting without damage to the finish of the article. This is particularly important when protecting vehicle body parts when the paint finish of the body parts may not have attained its final fully hardened state.
