CUP WITH A FOLDABLE COVER PORTION
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to a cup for liquid, having a foldable cover portion. The invention also relates to apparatus comprising template means for forming such a cup.
Background
Single use cups having paper based bodies closed at a bottom are well known. Plastic lids designed to fit over such cups are often provided to prevent spillage. Where such lids are to be made available, they have to match with particular cups. Such lids are typically less environmentally friendly than the paper based cups. Also, such lids take up valuable space in a cafe or by a vending machine. A known paper based cup attempts to address these issues by providing a fold down top portion. Such a cup is disclosed in known patent document WO2013175020. However, such a cup has drawbacks. For example, a top part of the cup is oval, uncomfortable to hold, and feels unnatural to drink from. It is an object of the present invention to address the above-mentioned issues.
Summary of the Invention
In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a cup for liquid, as defined in claim 1.
This cup addresses, at least partially, at least some of the issues described above.

Detailed Description of Embodiments
Embodiments of the invention relate to a cup having a cover section that can be folded from an open disposition in which liquid can be poured into the cup, to a closed disposition in which the cover section covers, at least in part, liquid that has been poured into the cup, and splash of the liquid from the cup is substantially prevented. An aperture is provided in a body of the cup near the cover section from which the liquid can be drunk. A cup has a conventional orientation. Some terms are used in the following that should be construed in view of that orientation, such as “top” and “bottom”.
Referring to Figures 1A, IB, 2A, 2B and 3, in an embodiment a cup has a body, a base, and a cover section. The body provides a circumferential wall, closed by the base, and the body and base can together retain liquid. The cover section is foldable from an open disposition, indicated in Figures 2A and 2B, to a closed disposition, indicating in Figures 1A and IB. A mid-disposition between the open disposition and the closed disposition is indicated in Figures 3.
The body and the cover section are formed from a first template, indicated in Figure 4A, and the base is formed from a second template, indicated in Figure 4B. The first and second templates are made from paper coated with wax to prevent absorption or penetration of liquid. The paper may be recycled and/or recyclable. Alternative materials may be used to make the cup; biodegradable materials are preferred.
In greater detail, the cup has a hexagonal circumference and, accordingly, the body of the cup comprises a wall having six planar wall portions lOa-f. Each wall portion 10a-f has first and second longitudinal side edges, a top side edge and a bottom side edge. The first longitudinal side edge of each of the wall portions lOa-f is joined to a respective second longitudinal side of an adjacent wall portion lOa-f at wall fold lines 12a-f. Thus, the wall portions lOa-f are arranged in a hexagonal formation.
Each of the wall portions lOa-f is in the form of a trapezium. The top side edge and the bottom side edge of each wall portion lOa-f are parallel. The bottom side edge is shorter than the corresponding top side edge. Thus, the wall portions lOa-f each taper from the respective top side edge to the corresponding bottom side edge, and a circumference of the body is smaller at the bottom of the body than at its top.
The cover section is joined to the wall portions lOa-f at the top side edges of the wall portions. A rim fold line 14a-f is located at each top side edge, between the wall portion lOa-f and the cover section, and defines the corresponding top side edge. The rim fold lines 14a-f collectively define a rim, which extends circumferentially around the cup.
The cover section is formed from a plurality of first fold portions 16a-f and a corresponding plurality of second fold portions 18a-f. Each first fold portion 16a-f extends from a respective one of the planar wall portions lOa-f and is foldable relative to the corresponding wall portion lOa-f about the respective rim fold line 14a-f. The second fold portions 18a-f are triangular and are located between adjacent first fold portions 16a-f, and arranged to form a middle part of a z-fold when the first fold portions 16a-f are collapsed towards the centre of the cup, as defined by a central axis extending upwardly from a centre of the base in an orthogonal manner, and partially overlie. First and second fold lines 20a-f, 22a-f are provided enabling the z-folds. A pouring aperture 24 extends along a part of the rim, the aperture 24 being provided at an apex of the rim fold lines 14a, 14b. The aperture is provided in the material of the first fold portions 16c, 16d and the second fold portion 18c. In variant embodiments, the pouring aperture 24 may be otherwise located in an upper portion of the cup.
The first and second templates are stamped or cut from larger pieces. The first template includes a first flap 26a that extends from the second longitudinal side edge of the last wall portion lOf along a whole length thereof. The first template also includes a second flap 26b that extends along an edge of the second fold portion 18f. The first flap 26a has a heat-activated adhesive thereon that can adhere to the first wall portion 10a to sealingly attach the first wall portion 10a and the last wall portion lOf. Similarly, the second flap 26b has a heat-activated adhesive thereon that can adhere the first fold portion 16a to the last fold portion 18f.
The second template comprises a hexagonal bottom portion 28 with a respective tab portion 30a-f extending from each of six side edges of the bottom portion 28. Each tab portion 30a-f has a heat-activated adhesive with which the base can be adhered to the body. This is achieved by adhered each tab portion 30a-f to a corresponding one of the wall portions lOa-f in a vicinity of a bottom side edge thereof, so as to sealingly attach the base to the body and to prevent egress of liquid contained in the cup.
Preferably, the rim fold lines 14a-f, the wall fold lines 12a-f, and the first and second fold lines 20a-f, 22a-f are marked in the templates with score lines to facilitate folding.
In use, the cover section of the cup is initially in an open disposition in which liquid can be poured into the cup and in which multiple such cups can be stacked. After a liquid has been poured into the cup, the cover section can be easily folded from the open configuration to the closed configuration in a press and twist action. The liquid can be drunk through the pouring aperture.
After the fold section is folded closed, a hole is located at a centre of the top, as indicated in Figure 2. Usefully, this hole permits ambient air to enter the cup as liquid inside the cup is poured out.
In a variant embodiment, the first and second templates are joined, such that the cup can be formed from a single piece template.
In accordance with a second embodiment, the base is circular. In this case, the wall fold lines extend from the rim fold lines 14a-f, but do not extend all the way to the bottom side edges of the body portion. Such a cup is indicated in Figures 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, and 7. The wall fold lines are indicated with reference numerals 112a-f and the wall portions are indicated at 1 lOa-f, but otherwise the parts of the cup and template are the same as those of the cup and template described above with reference to Figures 1A, IB, 2A, 2B, 3, 4A and 4B. First and second templates for forming a cup of the second embodiment are indicated in Figures 8 A and 8B. A cup having a hexagonal aspect is described above. In variant embodiments, a cup may have a triangular, quadrilateral, pentagonal, heptagonal, octagonal, nonagonal or decagonal aspect, such that there are three, four, five, seven, eight, nine or ten wall portions, each with a correspondingly configured cover portion and a base with a corresponding number of sides. Embodiments of the invention in the form of heptagonal, octagonal and pentagonal cups and the templates from which they are formed are illustrated in the following Figures, both having correspondingly shaped bases and circular bases. The heptagonal, octagonal and pentagonal cups and the templates have the same features as those described above, save for the number of sides of the cups.
In accordance with a third embodiment, a cup having seven sides and a heptagonal base is indicated in Figures 9A, 9B, 10A, 10B and 11. The first and second templates for such a cup are indicated in Figures 12A and 12B. This cup and the first and second templates differ only from those described with reference to 1A, IB, 2A, 2B, 3, 4A and 4B in that there is an additional side.
