Abstract
A surround sound system where the audio signals are wirelessly transmitted to a plurality of wireless loudspeakers within the system. The system may comprise means for providing an audio input to a subwoofer and means for transmitting the sound from the subwoofer to each speaker. The system may include: a wireless sound bar arranged to receive stereo (left, right and centre) sound channels wirelessly from the subwoofer; and at least two additional wireless satellite speakers (cube modules) for positioning behind the users listening point, one to the left the other to the right. The system may provide the user with 5.1 channel surround sound. The satellite speakers may be powered by batteries or an external source connected via a power cable.
Description
Surround Sound Systems
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to surround sound systems. Such a system enhances the sound reproduction quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the listener.
Background to the Invention
Current surround sound systems all require a form of wired connectivity. This can cause problems as wires need to be routed from the main receiver to the various speakers located in a room. EP-1665877 discloses apparatus, including a subwoofer, for wirelessly transmitting audio data to one or more speakers in a home theatre system.
However, the subwoofer receives the audio transmission and then distributes it by cable to the left and right surround speakers and the front C/L/R speakers are hard connected to the audio input.
Statements of the Invention
According to the present invention, there is provided a surround sound system in which the wires are replaced with a wireless technology whereby the audio signals are transmitted to a plurality of wireless speakers within the system.
Accordingly, with a system in accordance with the present invention there is no requirement for audio cables. Furthermore, modular upgrades are possible, users being able to add more speakers and grow the system at times convenient to them.
Preferably, the system comprises means for feeding audio source input into a subwoofer and means for transmitting the sound from the subwoofer to each speaker.
Preferably, the system includes a wireless sound bar arranged to receive stereo sound (left and right channels) wirelessly from the subwoofer.
The system may further include at least two additional wireless satellite speakers for positioning behind the users listening point, one to the left the other to the right.
Furthermore, the system may include a wireless soundbar arranged to receive sound from the subwoofer (left, right and centre channels) and a satellite for surround left and surround right providing the user with 5.1 channel surround sound, the only connection to the satellite speakers being a power cable. The satellite speakers may have the capability to be powered through an inbuilt battery. A system in accordance with the present invention is capable of transmitting the latest Dolby Atmos audio wirelessly.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The accompanying drawing illustrates three embodiments of surround sound systems in accordance with the present invention.
Detailed Description of the Invention
A system of the present invention transmits the audio sound associated with TV and Movie viewing, commonly referred to as either “surround sound” or “Dolby 5.1”.
Existing surround sound systems all require cable connections from the main receiver to the satellite and surround speakers. Some exceptions exist where the low frequency sounds (<200h) are transmitted to a sub-woofer wirelessly.
However, a system of the invention harnesses wireless technology to transmit audio from the source to each separate speaker. A subwoofer is the main “hub” for the system. All wired connections from the audio source are connected via input ports on the back of the subwoofer. The subwoofer receives inputs including HDMI (x2), RCA, 3.5mm.
The audio is then split in a number of ways although the low frequency range is contained and output via the subwoofer.
The user has several options which may be selected, allowing a much great degree of flexibility in the system. The user can add/remove speakers as required as the system will intelligently know how many speakers are connected and ensure the correct audio output is transmitted appropriately.
Examples of three arrangements in accordance with the present invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will now be described. In all three arrangements, the same initial step is followed.
Simple 2.1 Stereo. This features a wireless sound bar located in front of the television with just a single powered connection and the subwoofer. The subwoofer transmits stereo sound (left and right channels) to the soundbar wirelessly.
Dolby 5.1 Digital Plus. This also features a wireless soundbar and two additional wireless satellite speakers positioned behind the users listening point, one to the left the other to the right. Sound is transmitted wirelessly from the subwoofer to the soundbar (left, right and centre channels) and to a satellite for surround left and surround right providing the user with true 5.1 channel surround sound. The only connection to the satellite speakers is a power cable. The satellite speakers have the capability to be powered through the inbuilt battery.
Dobly Atmos 5.1.2. Dolby Atmos (Harmonius) is the latest audio technology to be developed by Dolby Laboratories Inc. It encompasses the listener in total sound with sound being delivered overhead as well as around the listener. This features a wireless soundbar and satellites as in the previous arrangement. In addition it includes a separate speaker that “docks” into the soundbar drawing both the audio decoding and power from the soundbar thus requiring no power cable of its own.
