Abstract

A stencil a for producing body art and images on the skin b of a user. The stencil is temporarily applied to a users skin, and has open, cut-away areas 2 that allow the skin to be exposed to the tanning rays 3; closed or obscure areas 4 that block the skins exposure to the tanning rays 3; and opaque areas 5 that reduce the exposure of the skin to the tanning rays 3. As a result of repeated exposure of the user to tanning rays 3, a temporary tattoo is formed on the users skin b. The varying degrees of opacity of the stencil, allows the intensity of the skins reaction to tanning rays e.g. sunlight or ultra violet rays, to be controlled, thereby producing a pattern/image of varying intensity. Preferably the stencil is made from laminated layers, allowing sheets with differing degrees of opacity to be over-laid, in order to create areas of different opacity and patterns. The border 1 of the patch maybe transparent. Preferably the stencil is made from flexible material that deforms to the contours of the users body, and held in position using adhesive. Preferably the material is hypo-allergenic, and made from a breathable fabric.

Description

TITLE:
Body art tanning stencil. “Tantoo”. BACKGROUND:
This invention relates to a stencil used for producing body art designs, and images on the skin, using the skin’s natural tanning reaction to sunlight or Ultra Violet rays.
Conventional forms of body art stencils require the application of paint, stain or some other form of colourant on top of the stencil in order to create a visible design on the skin once the stencil is removed.
The use of paints, stains, ink, or colourants on, or in the skin may not always be desirable, acceptable, or convenient. STATEMENT OF INVENTION:
In contrast to conventional stencils, this invention relates to stencils which when applied to the skin use the natural tanning reaction of the skin to sunlight or ultra-violet rays to create a design on the skin made up of tanned, un-tanned, and partially tanned areas which correspond to the presence of “open”, “closed”, and “opaque” areas respectively of the stencil’s design. Any artistic design or image which is capable of being made in to a stencil can be utilised within this invention. ADVANTAGES:
This invention creates the ability to achieve body art designs and images on the skin without the need for stains, ink, or colourants, and without concern for the potential risk of adverse skin reactions or allergies to paints, stains, or colourants that might otherwise be applied with conventional types of body art.
As no paint, ink, or stain is used, no skill or dexterity in its application is necessary.
The stencil may be self-adhesive, thereby minimising the effort required except for application to (and later removal from) the desired area of the body. A vast range of artistic designs are possible, as with conventional stencils.
Designs on difficult to reach parts of the body can be achieved without need for assistance from another person. INTRODUCTION TO DRAWINGS:
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 shows a variegated version of the skin stencil with resulting effect on the design on the skin’s surface.
Referring to figure 1, the skin stencil (a) is in the form of an adhesive skin patch with transparent border (1). In its final presentation the stencil comprises transparent or open cutout areas (2) of the design which allows sun light or UV rays (3) to pass through the patch resulting in an area of relatively intense sun tanning (2b) on the subject’s skin (b). Closed or obscured areas (4) of the design prevent sunlight or UV rays from passing through the patch, resulting in corresponding pale (un-tanned) areas on the subject’s skin (4b). Opaque areas of the design (5) allow only partial penetration of sun light or UV rays to achieve an intermediate intensity of sun tan reaction (5b) on the skin; the degree of opacity dictates the intensity of sun tan reaction achieved in such designated areas of the stencil’s design. DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
The body art stencil (“Tantoo”) described above relies on the natural response of the skin to become darker (tanned) on exposure to sunlight or artificial Ultra-Violet (UV) rays. Both simple and complex designs on the skin can be achieved as follows.
Simple designs:
Simple designs are based on achieving a two shade (bi-chromic) effect on the skin comprising a combination of tanned and un-tanned areas. To achieve this effect the stencil is constructed of “cut-away” open areas that allow contact of UV rays to the exposed skin, and “obscured” closed areas of the stencil which prevent contact of UV rays to the unexposed skin.
Complex designs:
Complex designs are based on achieving a variety of shades comprising a combination of tanned and un-tanned areas as described above, and in addition partially tanned areas of varying intensities which are achieved through the use of materials with varying opacity incorporated into the structure of the stencil. The areas of varying opacity incorporated into the stencils facilitate the restricted penetration of UV rays to varying degrees depending on the tanning intensity required on the final artistic design required.
The materials used for the construction of the stencils are any flexible material able to deform to the contours of the body surface such as paper, plastic, fabric, elastic, or latex type material which when applied to the skin by the use of an adhesive will be held in constant position allowing movement of the stencil to correspond to movement of the skin without displacement from its original position in which it was adhered so that distortion of the resulting image is avoided.
Materials used are optionally of a hypo-allergenic nature (as used with some surgical dressings) to avoid the possibility of adverse skin reactions.
Breathable fabrics, and bio-membranes may also be used as a material for constructing these stencils. The use of breathable fabrics or bio-membranes alleviates concerns from users about obstruction of skin pores and aeration of the skin for extended periods of time during which the stencils may be worn on the subject’s skin.
One surface of the stencil is for the application of an adhesive to allow temporary adherence of the stencil to the skin surface. In a preferred embodiment, the underside of the stencil may optionally be impregnated with an adhesive (as a self-adhesive layer) for ease of attachment to the skin. The adhesive used may be of a hypo-allergenic nature to minimise the possibility of adverse skin reactions.
The stencils are constructed in layers. The laminated layered construction of the stencils for “complex designs” allows sheets of material with differing degrees of opacity and light absorbance to be over-laid in order to create areas of different opacity and light absorbance within the required artistic design, resulting in varying degrees of skin colour to be achieved. Following the application of the stencil to the skin, and exposure to UV rays, the degree of opacity and light absorbance of the materials in different areas of the design will correlate with the degree of tanning of the skin in those specific areas, with a resulting multi-toned design (image) on the skin comprising tanned areas, un-tanned areas, and partially tanned areas of different intensities.
