Abstract

A reciprocating piston two-stroke internal combustion engine having a cylinder with combustion chamber and piston, a port on the cylinder operating as both an exhaust port and a transfer port, an exhaust passageway, a transfer passageway, and a rotary sleeve valve surrounding the cylinder controlling the communication of the hybrid port with the exhaust passageway and the transfer passageway. This allows a substantially asymmetrical timing of the ported two-strokes. The single port of the cylinder acts for a portion of the cycle as an exhaust port, and for another portion of the cycle as a transfer port, preventing gas from passing into the incorrect passageway at each stage. The rotary valve may also allow simultaneous communication of the hybrid port with both the exhaust and transfer passageways.
