Abstract

A downward venting loudspeaker enclosure 10 comprising a hollow body 12. The hollow body includes: at least one horizontal port 20 accommodating a drive unit 22; an internal partition 18 defining upper 19 and lower 21 volumes; and support members 30. The partition 18 includes an internal port 24, and the base 16 an external port 28. An acoustic diffuser member 34 is located on the base plate 32 and aligned with the external port 28 thereby reducing turbulence and noise. The acoustic diffuser member may comprise a contoured profile, such as a concave or Tractrix profile. The internal port may comprise a vent tube 26 extending upwards into the upper volume. The base plate may be the same size as the base.

Description

Vented Loudspeaker
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a vented loudspeaker enclosure. In particular, the present invention relates to a downward firing vented loudspeaker enclosure utilising an acoustic diffuser.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Vented box loudspeaker enclosures have been commonly used for over 60 years, where low frequency output and efficiency is enhanced by a tube or port which vents the inside of the enclosure at a specific frequency, by means of the Helmholtz resonance of the air mass in the tube or port as illustrated and described by Harry F Olson in Acoustical Engineering published in 1957. This arrangement augments the acoustical output of the loudspeaker transducer or transducers.
The tuning port of a speaker typically exits to the front or to the rear of the enclosure.
Front loading can result in audible distortion from turbulence in the port, while rear loading can result in impaired performance due to the proximity of the loudspeaker to a wall positioned to the rear of the loudspeaker. A further option is a downward venting/firing port, for example as illustrated and described in US patent US 5 517 573 (Polk et al.). The arrangement of the downward vent is considered to give a more predictable interface between the port and the room, by means of floor coupling, and makes the loudspeaker less sensitive to room positioning. Typically, the base of the enclosure is raised, for example by feet such that there is a space between the floor and the base of the enclosure. Therefore, the downward vented port disperses energy in all directions (360 degrees). A problem associated with a downward firing enclosure is organ pipe resonances within a tall enclosure. Organ pipe resonances are normally suppressed by a generous filling of damping material in the bottom of the cabinet, but due to the downward venting it is not practical to fill the enclosure with damping material. The organ pipe resonances can be reduced by adopting a double tuned enclosure as described by George Augspurger in “The Double-Chamber Loudspeaker Enclosure” published in the Electronics World publication in 1961. The example illustrated is a tall enclosure which includes a horizontal partition, approximately two-thirds down from the top of the enclosure and where the partition includes a port which connects an upper volume (above the partition) and a lower volume (below the partition), such that they are only connected at a specific frequency. A second port is included in the base such that energy exits through the bottom of the cabinet. Airflow exiting a downward port is can be attenuated on a carpeted floor, or disrupted by turbulence if colliding with a wooden floor.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a vented loudspeaker enclosure comprising: a hollow body including a base and a top, comprising at least one substantially horizontal port the hollow body, wherein a drive unit is receivable within the at least one substantially horizontal port; one or more support members operable to support and elevate the base from a surface upon which the vented loudspeaker enclosure rests; a base plate upon which the one or more support members can be supported; an internal partition mounted within the hollow body and arranged to define an upper volume between the partition and the top and a lower volume between the partition and the base, wherein the partition includes an internal port and the base comprises an external port providing a flow path from the upper volume to outside the hollow body via the external port, thereby facilitating venting the hollow body towards the base plate; and an acoustic diffuser member located external to the hollow body, wherein the diffuser member is supported on the base plate and aligned with the external port thereby providing a vent structure which allows air flow through the internal and external ports without turbulence and with greatly reduced noise.
The port through the base is considered an external port and is operable as a muffler, which blocks standing waves produced by the internal port provided through the partition
The acoustic diffuser member may be contoured.
The acoustic diffuser may comprise a Tractrix profile. The Tractrix profile maintains a 90-degree angle at each intersection of an expanding wavefront.
The internal port may comprise a vent tube, wherein the vent tube extends upwards into the upper volume.
The base plate may comprise a footprint of at least the same size as the base.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Embodiments of the present invention are described below, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of a vented loudspeaker according to an embodiment of the present invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Referring to figure 1, a loudspeaker 10 is illustrated. The loudspeaker 10 includes an enclosure, which comprises a hollow body 12. The hollow body 12 includes a top 14 and a base 16 and an internal partition 18. The internal partition divides the inside of the hollow body 12 into an upper volume 19 and a lower volume 21.
In the illustrated example, the upper volume 19 of the hollow body 12 includes two horizontal ports 20, in which two drivers 22 are inserted and secured. The drivers 22 are each arranged to vent to the front of the loudspeaker 10. It will be appreciated that one or more drivers 22 may be included in a loudspeaker 10.
An internal port 24 is provided through the partition 18 and a port tube 26 is inserted into the internal port 24. The port tube 26 extends upwards into the upper volume 19. The base 20 includes an external port 28. The internal port 24 and the external port 28 are aligned and are arranged to vent to the outside of the enclosure from the bottom of the enclosure.
The hollow body 12 is supported on support members or legs 30 such that the base is elevated from the surface on which the loud speaker is placed.
The support members of legs 30 are supported on a base plate 32. The base plate 32 will rest on a floor or suitable surface. The base plate 32 is positioned a predetermined distance from the bottom of the base 16 of the hollow body 12, to allow for 360 degree venting and controlled energy interface to the surface upon which the loudspeaker 10 rests.
Reflections from the base plate 32 is controlled by a contoured acoustic diffuser 34. In the illustrated example, the contoured acoustic diffuser 34 is operable to translate a plane wave exiting the external port 28 to a spherical wavefront into the room, without unwanted reflections. In the illustrated example, the contoured acoustic diffuser 34 comprises a Tractrix profile. A Tractrix profile maintains a 90-degree angle at each intersection of the expanding wavefront, as defined by the equation:
Where: y= distance along axis a= exit radius x= radius at point y
In the illustrated example, tuning of the loudspeaker 10 is achieved by the position and arrangement of the internal port 24 and the port tube 26. The function and purpose of the external port 28 acts as a muffler by blocking standing waves produced by the internal port 24. Typical tuning frequencies of the internal port 24 and the external port 28 are expected to be in the region of 30Hz and 150Hz respectively.
Whilst specific embodiments of the present invention have been described above, it will be appreciated that departures from the described embodiments may still fall within the scope of the present invention.
