TITLE: Connector for a Length of Zip Teeth
The present invention relates to a connector for a length of zip teeth.
It is often desirable to connect an array of zip teeth on one piece for material to an array of teeth on another piece of material. If the both sets of zip teeth are of the same size, this can be done in the normal way using a zip slider. A problem occurs however when the two sets of teeth are of different sizes.
For example it is known to provide an expander panel between the front edges of the opening for a jacket to increase the size of the jacket when a female is pregnant. The expander panel comprises an elongate strip of material with zip teeth down opposing long edges, one of said long edges with zip teeth having a zip fastener. The zip teeth on each long edge are zipped respectively to the zip teeth on the front edge opening of a jacket. If however the zip teeth on the expander panel are different to the teeth on the jacket opening the expander panel cannot function.
A known solution is to have at least one zip adapter strip having a length zip teeth of a first type along one long edge to engage with teeth along the long edge of the expander panel strip of material, and zip teeth of a second type along an opposing long edge to engage with zip teeth along an edge of a jacket. The problem with this is that it is inconvenient and expensive for the producer and seller of the expander panel to stock and market adapter strips to suit every different type of jacket zip.
The invention seeks to provide a connector for a length of zip teeth, which can be used, inter alia, to connect an adapter strip for an expander panel to all types of zips along an edge of a jacket.
According to the present invention there is provided a connector to engage with part of a length of zip teeth on a backing fabric comprising:
a) a length of channel section having opposing channel first and second free edges,
b) a flap member having hinged along a first flap edge to said first free edge, said flap member being movable from a first open position to a closed positon where the flap lies adjacent the second channel edge, and
c) connection means to connect the flap member to material, in use part of a length of zip teeth being engageable between the channel section and the flap member with the backing fabric sandwiched between the flap and second channel edge when in the closed position.
Preferably the flap member connection means is in the form of a number of apertures to receive thread to secure the material to the flap.
Preferably in the closed position a flap member second flap edge lies adjacent the second channel edge. Preferably interdigitating or other gripping members are provide in the second flap edge and the second channel edge to grip the backing fabric.
Preferably releasable locking means are provided to releasably secure the flap member in the closed position. The locking means may be in the form of projections on the channel section which engage with a friction fit in apertures on the flap member.
The invention also relates to a zip adapter strip having a length zip teeth of a first type along one long edge to engage with teeth along the long edge of an expander panel strip of material, and one or more connectors as defined above to engage with part of a length of zip teeth on a backing fabric along an edge of a jacket.
The invention also relates to an expander panel, and a zip adapter as above defined.
The invention also relates to an expander panel having at least one connector as above defined along one or both long edges to engage with part of a length of zip teeth on a backing fabric along an edge of a jacket.
···
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a connector in the open position,
Figure 2 shows the connector in the closed position Figure 3 shows a zip adapter strip with the connector of Figures 1 and 2, and
Figure 4 shows an expander panel.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a connector 1 to engage with part of a length of zip teeth on a backing fabric W on a jacket edge X.
Connector 1 is one of a number of connectors on one long edge A of an adapter strip Y, having zip teeth Z along an opposing long edge B. In practice the adapter strip Y may be thinner than that shown so that the teeth Z are closer to long edge A.
Connector 1 has a length of generally U-shaped channel section 2 having opposing channel first free edge 3 and channel second free edge 4.
A flap member 10 is hinged along a first flap edge 11A through an integrally moulded hinge 12 to said first free edge 3. The flap member 10 is movable from a first open position (Figure 1) to a closed positon (Figure 2) where a second flap edge 1 IB lies adjacent the second channel edge 4.
Connection means in the form of four apertures 13 are provided to receive thread 13A to connect the flap member 10 to the material of zip adaptor strip Y.
Preferably interdigitating members in the form of teeth 14B are provided on the second flap edge 1 IB and teeth 14A on the second channel edge. Teeth 14A,14B grip the backing fabric W. If desired gripping means other than interdigitating members could be provided.
Preferably releasable locking means are provided to releasably secure the flap member in the closed position. The locking means may be in the form of projections 5A,5B on the channel section free edge 3 which engage with a friction fit in apertures 15A,15B on the flap member
10.
In use part of a length of zip teeth being engageable between the channel section 2 and the flap member 10 with the backing fabric W sandwiched between the flap edge 1 IB and second channel edge 4 when in the closed position.
Connectors 1 may be used on a zip adapter strip 20 shown in Figure 3. Adapter strip 20 has a length of zip teeth 21 of a first type along one long edge to engage with teeth along the long edge 41A or 41B of an expander panel strip of material 40 (as known in the art and used between opposing zips of a jacket used to expand the size of a jacket and shown in Figure 4), and one or more connectors 1 to engage with part of a length of zip teeth on a backing fabric W along an edge of a jacket X.
The invention thus also relates to a zip adapter strip having a length zip teeth of a first type along one long edge to engage with teeth along the long edge of an expander panel strip of material, and one or more connectors as defined above to engage with part of a length of zip teeth on a backing fabric along an edge of a jacket. This could be sold with an expander panel.
If desired the expander panel 40 could be provided with a number of connectors 1 down each long edge 412A,41B instead of zip teeth. The would allow the expander panel to fit between edges of a jacket with the connectors 1 securing the expander panel 1 to the length of zip teeth on a backing fabric W along an edge of a jacket X.
The invention also relates to an expander panel having at least one connector as above defined along one or both long edges to engage with part of a length of zip teeth on a backing fabric along an edge of a jacket.
Although the connector 1 is described as being useful with an adaptor strip or expander panel for jackets, it could have uses to join material in general to teeth on baking fabric.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
