Vehicle Door Hinge Assembly
This disclosure relates to a vehicle door hinge assembly, and in particular, but not exclusively, relates to a vehicle door hinge assembly configured to retain a vehicle door in one or more predetermined open/closed positions.
Introduction
It is common for a vehicle door to need to be held open in one or more positions to prevent the door from closing whilst an individual is getting into or out of the vehicle, and/or loading cargo into or out of the vehicle. For example, a vehicle door may have a detent or catch, such as a check arm, configured to hold the door in one or more check, i.e. open, positions.
In a commercial vehicle, a check arm can be used to hold a rear door open, for example at multiple check positions such as 90 degrees, 180 degrees and/or 270 degrees from the closed position, according to hinge geometry, vehicle body style, and/or customer requirements.
However, use of a check arm means that the individual has to disengage the check arm, for example by physically moving the check arm, to be able to move the door between the fully open, closed, and/or predetermined check positions.
Statements of Invention
According to an aspect of the present disclosure there is provided a vehicle door hinge assembly, the hinge assembly comprising: a hinge; and a locking assembly configured to retain the hinge in one or more rotational positions; and a control member operatively connected to the locking assembly to actuate the locking assembly, the control member being provided remote from the hinge.
The control member may be operatively connected to the locking assembly by virtue of one or more intermediate elements. For example, the hinge assembly may comprise one or more linkages configured to mechanically connect the control member to the locking assembly. The linkage may comprise one or more flexible connecting
P129087GB00 members, e.g. a cable, configured to connect the control member to the locking assembly. The linkage may comprise one or more rigid members, e.g. a push rod, configured to connect the control member to the locking assembly. For example, the hinge assembly may comprise a linkage having a cable and/or a push rod routed at least partially through, across and/or around a vehicle door. As such, the locking assembly may be cable-operated and/or push rod operated.
The control member may be connected to the locking assembly by virtue of one or more powered mechanisms. For example, the locking assembly may be operatively connected to a motor configured to actuate the locking assembly. The motor may be connected to the control member, for example a switch, by virtue of one or more wired and/or wireless connections.
The hinge may comprise a first hinge component and a second hinge component. The first hinge component may be pivotally coupled to the second hinge component at a hinge axis. The locking assembly may comprise one or more locking elements arranged circumferentially about the hinge axis. The engagement element may be configured to selectively engage at least one of the locking elements, in order to retain the hinge in a predetermined rotational position. The locking elements may be spaced to define one or more rotational positions. For example, the locking elements may be spaced to define a first rotational position of the hinge in which the first hinge component and the second hinge component are rotated relative to each other by 90 degrees, a second rotational position of the hinge in which the first hinge component and the second hinge component are rotated relative to each other by 180 degrees, and/or a third rotational position of the hinge in which the first hinge component and the second hinge component are rotated relative to each other by 270 degrees. However, the rotational positions defined by the locking elements may be at any appropriate angle, depending on the configuration of a vehicle and/or the requirements of a user.
The control member may be operable to disengage the engagement element from the one or more locking elements. For example, a user may operate the control member to move the engagement element between a first position, e.g. an engaged position, and a second position, e.g. a disengaged position.
P129087GB00
The engagement element may be biased towards an engaged position. For example, the locking assembly may comprise a biasing element, such as a spring, configured to retain the engagement element in the engaged position.
The locking assembly may comprise a ratchet configured to allow the hinge to pivot in one rotational direction only.
There may be provided a vehicle door comprising one or more of the above described vehicle door hinge assemblies.
The hinge and the control member may be provided on opposite sides of the door. The vehicle door may comprise a handle. The control member may be provided near to the handle. The control member may be operatively connected to the handle. In this manner, the control member may be located on the door so that a user can access the control member whilst operating the handle of the door.
A vehicle may be provided comprising one or more of the above mentioned hinge assemblies and/or vehicle doors.
To avoid unnecessary duplication of effort and repetition of text in the specification, certain features are described in relation to only one or several aspects or arrangements of the disclosure. However, it is to be understood that, where it is technically possible, features described in relation to any aspect or arrangement of the disclosure may also be used with any other aspect or arrangement of the disclosure.
Brief Description of the Drawings
For a better understanding of the present disclosure, and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 depicts a vehicle door hinge;
Figure 2 depicts a partial cross section through a vehicle door hinge; and
P129087GB00
Figure 3 depicts a vehicle door assembly.
Detailed Description
The present disclosure provides a hinge assembly for a vehicle door. The hinge assembly may be used for a door on any type of vehicle, such a car, a van, a truck, a marine vessel or an aircraft. For example, the hinge assembly may be configured to support a rear cargo door of a commercial vehicle.
Figure 1 shows a hinge 101 having a first hinge component 103 and a second hinge component 105, each of which are configured to be secured to a respective portion of a vehicle. For example, the first hinge component 103 may be configured to be attached to a body portion of the vehicle, and the second hinge component 105 may be configured to be attached to a door of the vehicle. The first hinge component 103 is pivotally coupled to the second hinge component 105 by virtue of a hinge pin 107, which defines a hinge axis A-A.
Figure 2 shows a partial cross section through the hinge 101 of figure 1, showing a locking assembly 109 configured to retain the hinge 101 in one or more rotational positions. In the arrangement of figure 2, the locking assembly 109 comprises a plurality of locking elements 111, which are provided on the first hinge component 103, and an engagement element 113, which is provided on the second hinge component 105. The engagement element 113 is configured to engage the locking elements 111 to prevent or limit the movement of the first and second hinge components 103, 105 relative to each other.
In the arrangement of figure 2, the locking elements 111 comprises a plurality of pins 115 that are arranged circumferentially around the hinge pin 107, such that the pins 115 extend substantially parallel to the rotational axis A-A of the hinge pin 107. The engagement element 113 comprises another pin 117 arranged substantially perpendicular to the rotational axis A-A of the hinge pin 107, and is moveable between a first position (as shown in figure 2) where a free end of the engagement element 113 is disposed in between two adjacent locking elements 111, and a second position (not shown) where the free end of the engagement element 113 is removed from in between the two adjacent locking elements 111. In this manner, when the engagement
P129087GB00 element 113 is in the first position, the hinge 101 is prevented from rotating, and when the hinge 101 is in the second position, the hinge 101 is free to rotate. The locking assembly 109 may, however, comprise any appropriate type of detent features configured to cooperate to restrict the movement of the first and second hinge components 103, 105 relative to each other. For example, in another arrangement (not shown), the locking assembly 109 may comprise a ball lock type mechanism configured to restrict the movement of the first and second hinge components 103, 105 relative to each other.
In one arrangement, the engagement element 113 may be biased towards one of the first and second position. For example, the engagement element 113 may be biased towards the engaged position. In this manner, the locking assembly 109 may function to maintain the engagement element 113 in the engaged position, the engagement element 113 being withdrawn from the engaged position by overcoming the biasing force.
In one arrangement, the locking assembly 109 may comprise a ratchet configured to allow the hinge to pivot in one rotational direction only. For example, the engagement element 113 may comprise one or more sloped surfaces configured to engage a locking element 111, the cooperation between the sloped surface of the engagement element 113 and the locking element 111 acting to disengage the locking assembly 109 upon rotation of the first and second hinge components 103, 105 in one direction only.
It can be seen, therefore, that the engagement element 113 is configured to selectively engage the locking elements 111 to permit the incremental adjustment of the rotational position of the first and second hinge components 103, 105 relative to each other.
Figure 3 shows a vehicle door hinge assembly 119 according to the present disclosure. In the arrangement of figure 3, the hinge assembly 119 is installed to a rear door 121 of a van. However, the hinge assembly 119 may be installed to any appropriate door of a vehicle. The hinge assembly 119 comprises a control member 123 configured to actuate the locking assembly 109. For example, the control member 123 may be configured to move the engagement element 113 between the first position where the
P129087GB00 engagement element 113 engages the locking elements 111, and the second position where the engagement element 113 is disengaged from the locking elements 113.
An important feature is that the control member 123 is provided remote, e.g. spaced apart, from the locking assembly 109, so that an operator need not directly operate the locking assembly 109 to select a rotational position of the hinge 101. In the arrangement shown in figure 3, the control member 123 is operatively connected to the locking assembly by virtue of an intermediate element, such as push rod 125, configured to actuate the engagement element 117. However, the control member 123 may be operatively connected to the locking assembly 109 in any appropriate manner. For example, in another arrangement, the control member 123 may be operatively connected to the locking assembly 109 by virtue of one or more powered mechanisms. For example, the control member 123 may comprise a switch configured to activate a motor operable to actuate the locking assembly 109. The switch may be connected to the motor by virtue of one or more wired and/or wireless connections.
In the arrangement shown in figure 3, the control member comprises a handle 127 that is operable to move the engagement element 113 of the locking assembly 109 via the intermediate element, such as the push rod 125. The push rod 125 may be connected to the control member 123 and the locking assembly 109 to transfer the force directly between the two components. Alternatively, the intermediate element may comprise a force transfer mechanism configured to transmit the operating force of the control member 123 to the locking assembly 109. The benefit of such a feature is that the control member 123 may be positioned at any appropriate position on the vehicle, so that an operator can easily access the control member 123 when opening/closing the vehicle door 121.
In the arrangement shown in figure 3, the control member 123 is provided near to a handle 127 of the door 121, so that an vehicle operator may access the control member 123 when operating the door handle 127. In one arrangement, the control member 123 and the door handle 127 may be operatively connected, such that operation of the door handle 127 also operates the control member 123. For example, the door handle 127 may be moveable to a first position in which the door handle 127 unlatches the door 121, and a second position in which the door handle operates the control member 123. In another arrangement, the control member 123 may comprise
P129087GB00 the door handle 127. For example, the control member 123, in addition to being connected to the locking assembly 109, may be connected to a door latch and/or lock, so that the control member 123 may be used to actuate the locking assembly 109 and to unlatch the door 121. Thus, in one example mode of operation, an vehicle operator may open the door 121 using the door handle 127 and at the same time operate the control member 123, which acts to disengage the locking assembly 109 and allow the vehicle operator to freely open the door 121. The vehicle operator may then release the control member 123 to secure the door 121 in one of a plurality of predetermined rotational positions, defined by the configuration of the locking elements 111 and the engagement element 113. To close the door 121, or move the door 121 to another rotational position, the vehicle operator can again operate the control member 123 to release the locking assembly 109, and move the door 121.
Where the hinge assembly 119 comprises a ratchet, the hinge assembly 119 may be configured so that an vehicle operator need only operate the control member 123 when either opening or closing the door 121. For example, where the ratchet is configured to allow the door 121 to rotate towards a fully open position, the vehicle operator may move the door 121 between the predetermined rotational positions without operating the control member 123, and need only operate the control member 123 when moving the door 121 towards a fully closed position.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that although the disclosure has been described by way of example with reference to one or more arrangements, it is not limited to the disclosed arrangements and that alternative arrangements could be constructed without departing from the scope of the disclosure as defined by the appended claims.
