Abstract

A ratchet strap fastener 10 comprising a first flexible elongate body 12 having a first end 14 and a second opposed end 16, in which the first end 14 of the elongate body provides a loop 18 (e.g. a pair of metal D-rings) for receiving the second opposed end 16 of the elongate body, and a first portion of hook and loop fastening 20 is provided at or adjacent the second end 16 of the elongate body. The fastener further provides an eyelet 22 for receiving a ratchet hook(s) of a ratchet strap (figure 4) and a second portion of hook and loop fastening 24. A second flexible elongate body 30 may extend from and perpendicular to the first flexible elongate body 12. The second flexible elongate body may have a pair of opposed ends 32, 34, each end providing a portion of hook and loop fastening 36, 38 for releasable engagement. The first 12 and/or elongate body 30 may be composed of webbing. A method of securing a coiled-up ratchet strap using the ratchet fastener is disclosed. The ratchet trap fastener may store ratchet straps neatly, preventing tangling when not in use.

A Ratchet Strap Fastener
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to fastener for securing ratchet straps, in particular ratchet straps that are suitable for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).
Background
It is common for ratchet straps, in particular HGV ratchet straps, to become tangled when not in use. This therefore requires a vehicle driver to spend time untangling the straps prior to use which can be frustrating and time consuming. Due to regular tangling, the ratchet straps may become damaged and may need to be replaced.
Prior Art
US 2015/0230446 (?) discloses a device comprising double sided hook and loop fastener tape, such as Velcro (RTM) with a hole fashioned at least at one end to facilitate the attachment of a line, string or rope. The line, string or rope may be attached to a hook, snap or other hardware prior to attachment to the hole in the device. Once attached to the line, string or rope the device is then wrapped around a spool or reel containing the line, string or rope and attached to itself via the nature of the hook and loop fastener tape.
The present invention arose in order to overcome problems suffered by existing devices.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a ratchet strap fastener comprising: a first flexible elongate body having a first end and a second opposed end, in which the first end of the elongate body provides a loop for receiving the second opposed end of the elongate body, and a first portion of hook and loop fastening is provided at or adjacent the second end of the elongate body, the fastener further provides an eyelet for receiving a ratchet hook(s) of a ratchet strap, and a second portion of hook and loop fastening arranged in use to releasably engage the first portion of hook and loop fastening.
The ratchet strap fastener may further comprise a second flexible elongate body extending from and in a direction extending substantially perpendicular to the first flexible elongate body.
The second flexible elongate body preferably has a pair of opposed ends, and in which each end provides a portion of hook and loop fastening to provide releasably engagement between the pair of opposed ends.
The first and/or second elongate body of the fastener may be composed of webbing.
The eyelet is preferably a metal eyelet.
The loop is preferably provided by a pair of metal D-rings.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a ratchet strap assembly comprising a ratchet strap and a ratchet strap fastener as described herein.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of securing a ratchet strap using a ratchet strap fastener as described herein, the method comprising:
coiling up the ratchet strap such that the hooks are located adjacent an outer surface of the coiled strap;
inserting the or each hook through an eyelet of the ratchet strap fastener as described herein;
inserting the second end of the elongate body through the loop provided at the first end of the fastener;
pulling the second end of the elongate body through the loop to position the elongate body around the outer surface of the coiled ratchet strap;
engaging the first hook and loop portion at the second end of the elongate body with the second hook and loop portion; and optionally arranging the second elongate body to extend substantially around the coiled ratchet strap perpendicular to the first elongate body, and engaging the hook and loop fastenings provided at each end of the second elongate portion.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the Figures in which:
Brief Description of Figures
Figure 1 shows a schematic illustration of a ratchet strap fastener according to one embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a photographic image of the fastener of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a photographic image of a ratchet strap assembly comprising the ratchet strap fastener of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a further photographic image of a ratchet strap assembly comprising the ratchet strap fastener of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a schematic illustration of a ratchet strap fastener according to a further embodiment of the present invention.
Detailed Description of Figures
With reference to the Figures, the present invention provides a ratchet strap fastener 10 comprising a first flexible elongate body 12 having a first end 14 and a second opposed end 16. The first flexible elongate body 12 may have any suitable shape and dimensions.
Preferably the first flexible elongate body 12 is substantially rectangular in shape having a suitable width and length for securing the ratchet strap.
The first flexible elongate body is composed of polypropylene webbing material. It is however to be understood that any suitable material may be used.
The first end 14 of the elongate body 12 provides a loop 18 shaped and dimensioned to receive the second opposed end 16 of the elongate body 12. In the illustrated embodiment, the first end 14 provides a pair of metal D-loops. It is however to be understood that the fastener may comprise any number of loops, such as for example, a single loop.
A first portion of hook and loop fastening 20 is provided at or adjacent the second end 16 of the elongate body. The fastener 10 further provides a metal eyelet 22 shaped and dimensioned to receive a ratchet hook(s) of a ratchet strap (as shown in Figures 3 and 4).
The fastener 10 provides a second portion of hook and loop fastening 24 arranged in use to releasably engage the first portion of hook and loop fastening 20.
As shown in Figure 5, in one embodiment the fastener 10 may further comprise a second flexible elongate body 30 extending from and in a direction extending substantially perpendicular to the first flexible elongate body 12.
The second flexible elongate body 30 has a pair of opposed ends 32, 34. Each end 32, 34 provides a portion of hook and loop fastening 36, 38 to provide releasably engagement between the pair of opposed ends 32, 34.
The second elongate body is composed of webbing. It is however to be understood that the second elongate body may be composed of any suitable material.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate a ratchet strap assembly according to one aspect of the present invention.
The ratchet strap assembly is formed by: coiling up the ratchet strap such that the hooks are located adjacent an outer surface of the coiled strap; inserting the or each hook through an eyelet of the ratchet strap fastener of Figures 1 to 3 or Figure 5; inserting the second end of the elongate body through the loop provided at the first end of the fastener; pulling the second end of the elongate body through the loop to position the elongate body around the outer surface of the coiled ratchet strap; engaging the first hook and loop portion at the second end of the elongate body with the second hook and loop portion; and optionally arranging the second elongate body to extend substantially around the coiled ratchet strap perpendicular to the first elongate body, and engaging the hook and loop fastenings provided at each end of the second elongate portion.
The ratchet strap fastener of the present invention provides a way of storing ratchet straps neatly when not in use. The ratchet strap fastener of the present invention can be used quickly and easily to store straps neatly without any risk of the straps becoming loose. The ratchet strap fastener of the present invention provides for very simple user operation.
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of invention. Firstly it will be understood that any features described in relation to any particular embodiment may be featured in combinations with other embodiments.
