Lock Apparatus
The present invention relates to lock apparatus, particularly but not exclusively lock apparatus for releasably locking and mounting an item to a support.
Conventionally, it is known to provide lock apparatus which secures one item to another and requires a key to permit separation. However, such known apparatus can be inconvenient and/or unsuitable for releasably locking and mounting an item to a support, for example, releasably locking and mounting a parcel receiving receptacle to an external side of an external door or wall.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided lock apparatus for releasably locking and mounting an item to a support, the apparatus including a lock device, the lock device including:
• an insert member, which defines an interior and a catch through aperture;
• a catch member which is located in the insert member interior;
• a receiving member, which defines a passage and a catch recess; wherein, in an assembled condition, the insert member is located in the passage, the lock device being movable between a locked condition and a release condition, the catch member including a detent part, wherein, in the locked condition, the detent part extends through the catch aperture to protrude outside of the insert member and into the catch recess thereby preventing movement of the device from the assembled condition to a disassembled condition, and, in the release condition, the detent part of the catch member does not protrude outside the insert member and thereby permits movement of the device out of the assembled condition to the dissembled condition.
Possibly, the lock device moves automatically to the locked condition, possibly, when the detent part, the catch aperture and the catch recess are aligned.

Fig. 6 is a side view of the catch member in a disassembled condition.
Figs. 1 to 6 show lock apparatus 100 for releasably locking and mounting an item to a support.
The apparatus 100 includes a lock device 10. The lock device 10 includes: an insert member 12, which defines an interior 14 and a catch through aperture 16; a catch member 18 which is located in the insert member interior 14; and a receiving member 20, which defines a passage 22 and a catch recess 24.
In an assembled condition, the insert member 12 is located in the passage 22. The lock device 10 is movable between a locked condition and a release condition. The catch member 18 includes a detent part 26.
In the locked condition, the detent part 26 extends through the catch aperture 16 to protrude outside of the insert member 12 and into the catch recess 24 thereby preventing movement of the device 10 from the assembled condition to a disassembled condition.
In the release condition, the detent part 26 of the catch member 18 does not protrude outside the insert member 12 and thereby permits movement of the device 10 out of the assembled condition to the dissembled condition.
The passage 22 extends along a passage axis 28.
In the example shown, the insert member 12 defines two catch apertures 16. The receiving member 20 defines two catch recesses 24. The catch member 18 includes two detent parts 26. In the locked condition, each detent part 26 extends through a different one of the catch apertures 16 into a different one of the catch recesses 24.
The catch recesses 24 correspond in axial location, but extend in substantially opposite radial directions (indicated by arrow 30) relative to the passage axis 28.
The receiving member 20 includes a passage stop 50, against which the insert member 12 locates in the assembled condition.
The passage 22 is a blind passage. The receiving member 20 includes an end wall 52 which comprises a blind end of the passage 24. The passage end wall 52 comprises the passage stop 50.
In the example shown, the receiving member 20 includes a body part 122, a relatively enlarged end part 104 and an abutting step face 106 between the body part 122 and the end part 104.
The interior 14 extends along an insert member axis 72. The catch apertures 16 correspond in axial location, but extend in substantially opposite radial directions (indicated by arrow 74) relative to the insert member axis 72.
The insert member 12 includes an interior stop 150, against which the catch member 18 locates in the assembled condition.
The interior 14 is closed at one end. The insert member 12 includes an end wall 152, which closes the interior 14 at the one end, and comprises the interior stop 150.
In the assembled condition, the insert member axis 72 extends substantially along or parallel to the passage axis 28.
In moving from the disassembled condition to the assembled condition, the insert member 12 is moved along an insertion direction indicated by arrow
76, which is aligned along or parallel to the passage axis 28.
In the assembled condition, the radial directions 74 of the catch apertures 16 and the radial directions 30 of the catch recesses 24 are substantially aligned.
The catch recesses 24 are of similar size and shape to the catch through apertures 16. In the assembled condition, the catch apertures 16 and the catch recesses 24 substantially correspond in axial location and radial direction.
Each detent part 26 includes an engaging face 32, which, in the locked condition locates against an engaging face 34 of the receiving member 20, which is one of the faces which defines a respective one of the catch recesses 24.
In the locked condition, each of the detent part engaging faces 32 extends substantially normally to the insert member axis 72, to ensure secure and stable engagement of the detent part engaging faces 32 with the engaging faces 34 of the receiving member 20.
In this condition, the engagement of the engaging faces 32, 34 resists movement of the lock device 10 out of the locked condition.
Relative to the insertion direction 76, the detent part engaging faces 32 face rearwardly away from the insertion direction 76.
Each detent part 26 includes an inserting face 132 which is angled at an oblique angle 134 to the insert member axis 72 in an insertion condition in which the catch member 18 is deformed to permit entry into the interior 14 and/or the insert member 12 is inserted into the passage 22, as will be described below.
The inserting faces 132 face outwardly and forwardly relative to the insertion direction 76.
The apparatus 100 includes a release tool 36, which is required to move the lock device 10 from the locked condition to the release condition.
As shown in Fig. 5, the release tool 36 includes a key part 38, which is insertable into the interior 14 to move the lock device 10 from the locked condition to the release condition along the insertion direction 76, towards the interior end wall 152. The release tool 36 could include a handle part (not shown) for gripping by a user.
The catch member 18 includes a pair of key engaging surfaces 40. Each key engaging surface 40 slopes relative to the insert member axis 72 and is inclined at an oblique angle 44 to the insert member axis 72. The key engaging surfaces 40 are arranged on opposite sides of the insert member axis 72, and slope in different directions, oppositely to each other (in mirror symmetry) around the insert member axis 72.
The release tool 36 includes a pair of catch member engaging surfaces 42. In the release condition, each of the catch member engaging surfaces locates against a different one of the key engaging surfaces 40. The release tool 36 includes a tool axis 78, which, in the release condition is substantially aligned along the insert member axis 72.
The catch member engaging surfaces 42 slope relative to the tool axis 78, and are inclined at an oblique angle 46 to the tool axis 78. The catch member engaging surfaces 42 are located on opposite sides of the tool axis 78, and slope in different directions oppositely to each other (in mirror symmetry) around the tool axis 72.
The key engaging surfaces 40 face outwardly, away from the insertion direction 76 and away from the passage end wall 52. The catch member engaging surfaces 42 face inwardly, in or towards the insertion direction 76 and towards the passage end wall 52.
The catch member 18 is arranged to be biased to the locked condition, and could be formed from a resiliently deformable material, such as spring steel. The catch member 18 could be formed by any suitable process. Advantageously, the catch member 18 shown in Fig. 6 could be formed from a flat material in one operation, for example by stamping or pressing of relatively thin steel sheet or strip.
The catch member 18 includes an end part 48, which locates against the end wall 152 of the interior 14.
The catch member 18 includes a pair of arms 54, which extend along the interior 14 from the end part 48, and are pivotally movable between the locked condition and the release condition.
Each arm 54 is substantially planar, and the catch member 18 is substantially planar. The arms 54 and at least part of the catch apertures 16 are co-planar.
The arms 54 extend alongside each other on opposite sides of the insert member axis 72 and are substantially symmetrical around the insert member axis 72.
Each arm 54 includes a plurality of substantially straight parts 56A, 56B, 56C, 56D, each of which is separated from an adjacent part or parts by a bend 58A, 58B, 58C, 58D, so that the adjacent parts extend in different directions.
In one example, each arm 54 includes, in sequence from the end part
48, a first bend 58A, a first arm part 56A, a second bend 58B, a second arm part 56B, a third bend 58C, a third arm part 56C, a fourth bend 58D and a fourth arm part 56D, which comprises the detent part 26.
The key engaging surfaces 40 comprise part of the third arm part 56C.
Moving from one of the ends of the end part 48 which extends across and is located close to or against the interior end wall 152, the first bend 58A is close to or against a first side wall 80 defining the interior 14, the first arm part 56A extends across the interior 14 towards an opposite second side wall 82 and away from the end wall 152 to the second bend 58B in a central axial region 84. The second arm part 56B then extends towards the first side wall 80 and away from the end wall 152 to the third bend 58C in the central axial region 84. The third arm part 56C then extends towards the first side wall 80 and towards the end wall 152 to the fourth bend 58D which is located at or close to the first side wall 80 and in some conditions within one of the catch apertures 16. The fourth arm part 56D (the detent part 26) then extends laterally outwardly away from the second side wall 82 and longitudinally away from the end wall 152.
The first bend 58A thus reverses the lateral direction and maintains the longitudinal direction of the arm 54. The second bend 58B reverses the lateral direction and maintains the longitudinal direction of the arm 54. The third bend 58C maintains the lateral direction and reverses the longitudinal direction of the arm 54. The fourth bend 58D maintains the lateral direction and reverses the longitudinal direction of the arm 54.
In a relaxed, non-deformed condition as shown in Fig. 6, the arms 54 extend outwardly beyond the side walls 80, 82, of the interior 14.
To assemble the lock device 10, the arms 54 are compressed together to the insertion condition in which the catch member 18 can be located into the interior 14, as shown in Fig. 4.
The angled inserting faces 132 aid insertion as it is not necessary for the user to compress the arms to completely clear the side walls 80, 82 of the interior 14. The side walls 80, 82 contact the angled inserting faces 132 during insertion and act to compress the arms 54 as force is applied to insert the catch member 18 into the interior 14.
In the assembled condition, the end part 48 of the catch member 18 is substantially located against the interior end wall 152. The detent parts 26 locate into and through the catch apertures 16 and protrude outside of the insert member 12.
The insert member 12 is then inserted into the receiving member 20 until the insert member 12 locates against the passage end wall 52. Again the angled inserting faces 132 aid insertion as it is not necessary for the user to compress the arms 54 to completely clear the side walls of the passage 22. The side walls of the passage 22 contact the angled inserting faces 132 during insertion and act to compress the arms 54 as force is applied to insert the insert member 12 into the passage 22.
In this condition (with the end part 48 of the catch member 18 substantially located against the interior end wall 152 and the insert member 12 substantially located against the passage end wall 52), the detent parts 26, the catch apertures 16 and the catch recesses 24 all substantially correspond in axial location, and if the detent parts 26, the catch apertures 16 and the catch recesses 24 are also all substantially radially aligned, the detent parts 26 automatically spring outwardly to the locked condition due to the biasing action of the catch member 18. If the detent parts 26, the catch apertures 16 and the catch recesses 24 are not all substantially radially aligned, then the user can rotate the insert member 12 around the passage axis 28 until they are aligned and the detent parts 26 spring outwardly to the locked condition.
In another example, the receiving member 20 defines a catch recess which extends continuously circumferentially around the passage 22.
Advantageously, this means that when the insert member 12 is located into the passage 22, no rotation of the insert member 12 is required to effect alignment, so that the detent parts 26 will automatically spring outwardly to the locked condition.
The springing outwardly of the arms 54 of the catch member 18 provides an audible click and tactile feedback to the user, assuring the user that the lock device 10 is in the locked condition.
To remove the insert member 12 from the receiving member 20, the key part 38 is inserted into the interior 14 and a force applied along the insertion direction 76. As the key part 38 is inserted into the interior 14, the catch member engaging surfaces 42 of the key part 38 contact the key engaging surfaces 40 of the catch member 18 and urge the key engaging surfaces 40 inwardly towards the insert member axis 72 and towards the release condition, thus moving the device 10 from the locked condition to the release condition. As the key engaging surfaces 40 move inwardly, the detent parts 26 also move inwardly, out of the catch recesses 24 to the release condition.
Advantageously, the locking device is relatively simple in construction and has few moving parts. The locking device 10 moves automatically to the locked condition when the detent parts 26, the catch apertures 16 and the catch recesses 24 are aligned, but requires the key part 38 to move to the release condition. This means that, advantageously, a key or unlocking device does not need to be left with delivery personnel, but that delivery personnel can effect locking of the locking device 10 by simply inserting the insert member 12 into the receiving member 20.
In one possible example, the lock apparatus 100 could comprise part of goods receiving apparatus (not shown). The receiving member 20 could comprise part of a mounting or fixing (not shown), which could be mountable to a support (not shown) such as a wall or a door, which could comprise an external surface. The receiving member 20 could comprise part of a fastener such as a bolt, expanding wall bolt or wall anchor and, in use, could locate in or through a hole (not shown) defined in the surface. The insert member 12 could be mounted to or comprise part of an item, which could comprise a receptacle (not shown) ofthe goods receiving apparatus.
In another possible example in which the lock apparatus 100 comprises part of the goods receiving apparatus, the insert member 12 could comprise part of a mounting or fixing (not shown), which could be mountable to a support (not shown) such as a wall or a door, which could comprise an external surface. The insert member 12 could comprise part of a fastener such as a bolt, expanding wall bolt or wall anchor and, in use, could locate in or through a hole (not shown) defined in the surface. The receiving member 20 could be mounted to or comprise part of an item, which could comprise a receptacle (not shown) ofthe goods receiving apparatus.
Various other modifications could be made without departing from the scope of the invention. The lock apparatus and the various components thereof could be of any suitable size and shape, and could be formed of any suitable material (within the scope ofthe specific definitions herein).
In one example, the catch member could be formed of steel wire, and could comprise a coil spring, with arms similar to those described above.
The receiving member could comprise part of a bolt-like fastener, for example, an expanding bolt which is fixed into a wall, and could comprise threaded surfaces or other fixing/engagement/attachment formations. For example, a threaded formation could be formed on the exterior side surface of the enlarged part 104 of the receiving member 20.
The shape of the catch member 18 could be different.
In another example, the number of detent parts, catch recesses and catch apertures could be different. For example, the lock device could include just one detent part, one catch recess and one catch aperture.
There is thus provided lock apparatus with a number of advantages over conventional arrangements.
