SAFETY APPARATUS FOR AN ARTICULATED VEHICLE Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to apparatus for an articulated vehicle, in particular safety apparatus for lighting an articulated vehicle; more particularly but not exclusively apparatus for lighting a part of an articulated vehicle when electrical systems fail.
Background
Increasing numbers of vehicles on the road in many societies can lead to a variety of problems. In particular larger vehicles such as articulated vehicles or heavy goods vehicles (HGV) can be hazardous in many environments.
For example if a HGV tractor unit or trailer suffers from an electronic system failure, the vehicle becomes illegal and unsafe to operate and the driver is required to stop and seek breakdown assistance to rectify the issue or recovery for the vehicle. This legal requirement often leaves the driver and the vehicle in a dangerous position for themselves and other road users. It also has a major cumulative effect to logistics with time delays and potential penalties for the driver.
In addition or the alternative unloading a disabled vehicle with no ambient lighting can be hazardous, time-consuming and difficult.

Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided an apparatus for an articulated vehicle with a mounting for receiving the apparatus and from which the apparatus can be displaced comprising: at least one elongate, light source in the form of a flexible cable provided on a reel; a connector for connecting the light source to a power supply; and an auxiliary energy supply.
In this way the apparatus may enable a user to light an articulated vehicle’s trailer via the tractor vehicle, and provide auxiliary energy for the light source when the tractor vehicle’s energy source fails.
The apparatus thereby provides an emergency lighting system that is powered from either the tractor vehicle electrical system in case of a trailer fault, or an internal battery in case of a total electronic system failure.
In some embodiments the light source is a rope light that secures around the outside of the trailer so as to provide necessary lighting including the indicators, brake lights and tail lights at the rear of the vehicle, so that the vehicle can continue on its way. In case of total power failure and the vehicle is immobile, the apparatus will illuminate the hazard to other road users. A rope or cable may thereby comprise mounting also for the light source.
The light source may comprise a translucent or transparent format, wherein the light source may be comprised by a plurality of light emitting diodes. The light emitting diodes may be reflected or refracted to form a continuous light source. The light emitting diodes may comprise discrete light sources wherein the light source comprises a plurality thereof.
The light source comprises a plurality of discrete light sources joined by cabling, so as to create a string of electrically and physically connected light sources. Such string may accordingly advantageously provide an effective means of illuminating an elongate structure such as a trailer. In some embodiments the light source may be provided with a plurality of differing colour effects and/or patterns, so as to better draw attention to the vehicle.
In some embodiments the light source is powered by and extendable from a device. This device may comprise a separate mounting, wherein the device and mounting form a base unit for the light source to extend from.
Such device mounting may enable the device to be displaceable therefrom, wherein the mounting comprises a discrete part providing a wholly displaceable part from a vehicle. A base unit mounting may enable the base unit to be displaceable therefrom, so as to allow for use of the base unit on multiple base unit mountings, and/or vehicles, and/or so as to allow for the base unit to be portable, for example to use or store as required; allowing a part of the mounting to be left on a vehicle.
The device has a reel and the device mounting is a cradle. The reel is displaceable from the cradle, and emplaced to form the base unit. In this way the cradle may for example comprise the auxiliary energy mechanism, and the device may dock thereinto.
The cradle may be attached to the tractor vehicle and the light source spread out from the base unit, for example by pulling the light source away from the device, or moving the device away from the cradle. Alternatively the base unit may be carried to the scene and placed on a nearby surface and the light source reeled out for use, such as when the apparatus is required for temporary use.
In some embodiments the base unit comprises a safety light. Such safety light may comprise lighting to illuminate the base unit when being installed or used, and/or may be activated to draw attention to the base unit, for example comprising intermittent activation.
In some embodiments the light source comprises a plurality of light sources, for example a plurality of light emitting diodes.
In some embodiments the light source comprises luminescent material.
The light source may be embedded in or carried by the flexible cable, such that the light source may be arranged around a plurality of objects or structures. For example the flexible light source may be arranged around a trailer of an articulated vehicle.
The light source may provide a plurality of mounting means, which means may enable the light source to be adapted to differing structures. The light source may comprise standard and/or independent mounting means, for example clips, tape, or parts of the vehicle or trailer.
In this way the apparatus may be mounted on a plurality of different trailers and/or tractor vehicles, as and when required by the user or haulier.
In some embodiments the light source may be sufficiently flexible to enable the light source to be rolled up for storage. According to a second aspect of the present invention thereby the apparatus comprises a rolling means, or reel casing, which is arranged to roll or reel the light source and/or light source. Such reel casing may be comprised in the base unit.
In some embodiments the device comprises further storage arranged for storing a plurality of items, for example medical, electrical or safety supplies. The storage may be comprised in the base unit.
The connector is arranged to connect the light source to the vehicle battery and other electrical outlets, for example comprising a plug. The mounting or light source may further comprise a plug arranged to connect to the light source to the reel casing, base unit and/or auxiliary energy mechanism.
The auxiliary energy mechanism may comprise at least one battery. Such mechanism may comprise a plurality of batteries. Such batteries may be rechargeable, for example lithium-ion.
In some embodiments the device may include the battery or batteries.
In some embodiments therefore the reel may be used to take the flexible cable around the structure to be lit, advantageously so as to enable easier disposition of the flexible cable, and/or allowing the reel and flexible to be disconnected from the energy mechanism and disconnected from the vehicle, as required; and allowing the reel to be subsequently docked in the casing (mounting) when access to the energy is required for the light source.
In some embodiments the light source may comprise variant mode operation, for example intermittent or colour variation.

Detailed Description of Figures
With reference to figures 1 to 6 there is shown an embodiment of the apparatus comprising a base unit and an extendable light source.
The base unit comprises a cradle device mounting 2, and a displaceable reel device 1 for an extending cable, which cable provides the light source 3.
The cradle is a monolithic unit formed of thermoplastics.
The mounting of the light source comprises an elongate member, which comprises a rope with internal light emitting diodes, spread therealong, spaced apart and connected using internal wiring. The light source comprises translucent or transparent material such as thermoplastics. The light source in use further comprises temporary mounting means such as cable ties, clips and/or adhesive, or may be threaded through clips or straps of the trailer.
The light source comprises a plurality of lights, which lights are spaced out along the rope. The rope comprises a rectangular sectional profile to aid in mounting to a vehicle. The light source comprises the connector 9 on its distal end.
The light source may be wound into or out of the reel, wherein the reel is driven by a manual control, which control comprises a lever 5 hinged at a hinge 13 so as to allow that the lever may be hinged inwards after use to limit accidental reeling by a locking action. The lever hinges out from a depression 14, such that the lever may be stored without interference or risk of unauthorised or accidental reeling.
The base unit may comprise a portable unit, and the device independently provides a portable unit, displaceable from the cradle when the cradle has been mounted or emplaced on a tractor vehicle. The cradle therefore comprises an attachment means for attachment to the structure, which may be attached and left in place, which attachment means comprises screw-holes 17.
The cradle mounts directly onto the rear of the cab/truck and features a large battery pack 12 to effectively power the light source. This advantageously allows the reel device to be more portable and weigh less. In this way the device may be taken around the trailer or vehicle to unreel the light source.
The connector may be connected to the vehicle battery and the reel extended, or the device may be docked in the cradle and the light source extended in use.
The device comprises two safety lights 11,15 which safety lights are used to light the user’s mounting of the base unit and light source, where the safety lights are arranged to either side of the device.
The device further comprises a control 16, which comprises a simple activation control. The device further comprises a topmost handle 10, such that the handle enables the device to be carried around the trailer to vehicle and extend the light source therefrom. The device connects into the cradle at socket 8 and plug 7.
The light source rope is wound around a reel 6 and connected to the plug lowermost.
The device includes a window 18, to see the light source on the reel, for example so as to provide local lighting when the light source is active, and/or view remaining light source on reel.
The rear of the reel holder includes a removable tray 4. This tray is used to store cable ties, adhesive pads, zip ties to secure the rope to the trailer, and potentially items such as a first aid kit.
The light source consists of approximately 40 metres of lighting including warning/amber, tail, indicator & brake lights. The connector plugs into the 24V output on the trailer cab.
Based on a total of 96 LEDs running in 4 parallel banks of 24 LEDs, connected in series, the light source can be run from a 12V battery which is a typical and easily obtainable battery voltage specification.
The overall consumption breaks down as follows: 0.1 A (CURRENT/LED) x 24 (LEDS) = 2.4A, 4 (BANKS) x 3V (VOLTAGE) = 12V
In this scenario a battery of 12V is required with a capacity of at least 2.4Ah (understanding that a battery capacity of 2.4 Ah will run this system for 1 hour, 4.8Ah for 2 hours, 7.2Ah for 3 hours etc.)
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of invention as defined by the claims, in particular but not solely combination of features of described embodiments.
