Glove body insert for a sports glove and methods
The present invention relates to a glove body insert for a sports glove, to a method of making the glove body insert and to a method of adjusting a cushioning level of a glove body insert.
The use of a sports glove for training, boxing, and for other boxing related exercise is well known. The glove protects the user’s hand during training or a fight, allowing stronger punches to be thrown, and it can also reduce superficial facial injuries on impact of the glove to the face.
To avoid injuries to the hand, the boxing glove needs to be padded or cushioned. It is often personal preference as to how padded or cushioned a boxing glove is for a certain activity. The amount of cushioning required can also be dependent on the activity for which it is being used. Gloves come in different weights, for instance 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz and16oz. As the weight increases, the amount of padding or cushioning increases; a 16oz glove will offer more protection for the hand and body being hit than an 8oz glove. The different weights of glove are used for different activities. For instance, a 10oz glove would likely be used for training on the bags, where less padding is needed, whereas a 16oz glove would likely be used for sparring or fighting to reduce the chances of injury to the hand and the opponent. Typically, a boxer will need to buy several pairs of gloves for the different activities, which can be very costly.
It would be beneficial to provide for a sports glove that is customisable, and suitable for a range of activities. Embodiments of the present invention address all or some of the above problems.
According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a glove body insert for a sports glove, the sports glove comprising a glove body for receiving a hand of a person, the glove body comprising a palm portion and a dorsal portion, the palm portion extending between a first side and a second side of the glove body, and the dorsal portion extending between the first side and the second side of the glove body substantially opposite the palm portion, wherein the glove body insert is for inserting in at least the dorsal portion of the glove body for protecting the hand when received in the glove body, wherein the glove body insert comprises:
a body portion comprising a cavity in at least one side thereof; and an inflatable bladder comprising an inflation valve, the inflatable bladder for inserting in the cavity, the inflatable bladder having a complementary shape to that of the
-2cavity when inflated, to substantially fill the cavity when inserted therein.
The glove body insert provides for a customisable glove body insert and so customisable sports glove, suitable for a wide range of activities. The user can inflate the inflatable bladder with air to a desired level and, when inserted in the cavity of the body portion, it can provide the glove body insert, and so the sports glove to which it is inserted, with the desired level of cushioning. Since the user can provide the sports glove with the desired level of cushioning, the cushioning can be customised to suit the personal preference of the user, and/or can be altered to suit the activity for which it is being used. This glove body insert may prevent the need for the user to buy several different pairs of sports gloves with different weights, or levels of cushioning, for the different activities.
The cavity may be a blind hole. This may make the glove body insert stronger and more robust. Alternatively, the cavity may be a through hole.
The shape of the cavity may follow a contour of the body portion. This may provide for a more even and uniform level of cushioning across the glove body insert. The cavity may be a crescent shape. The cavity may be any other suitable shape.
The body portion may have a primary side having a thumb portion, and a secondary side substantially opposite the primary side, wherein the cavity may be open to the secondary side. This may make the cavity more accessible and/or make it more convenient for removing and inserting the inflatable bladder from/in the cavity. In a side-on profile from the secondary side, the cavity may be crescent shaped, or circular, or elliptical, or rectangular, or any other suitable shape.
The body portion may have a primary side having a thumb portion, and a secondary side substantially opposite the primary side, and the body portion may comprise a width extending between the primary side and the secondary side, wherein the cavity may have a depth extending across between 50% and 90% of the width of the body portion. This may allow for altering the cushioning of the glove body insert by a greater amount. The cavity may have a depth extending across between 65% and 80% of the width of the body portion, or between 70% and 75%.
The thumb portion may be on the secondary side and/or the convention of a first side and second side here may be switched around.
The body portion may have a finger portion and the cavity may extend into the finger portion. It may be predominantly located in the finger portion.
-3The body portion may have a section for directly covering the area of a hand between that level with the trapeziometacarpal joint and that level with the proximal inter-phalangeal joint, when the glove body insert is in use in a sports glove and a hand is inserted in the sports glove. The cavity may be defined within this section. This may be useful for providing the right level of cushioning to the most vulnerable part of the hand, or the part that is at the greatest risk of injury. The proximal inter-phalangeal joint is the joint second closest to the tip of the fingers. The trapeziometacarpal joint is the joint between the hand and the thumb. The cavity may extend further towards the tip of the fingers. The cavity may extend further towards the wrist of the hand. The cavity may be arranged to cover the carpometacarpal and metacarpophalangeal joints of the fingers.
The inflatable bladder may have a width substantially equal to a depth of the cavity. This may help prevent the bladder from sliding about or falling out of the cavity. The width of the inflatable bladder may be defined as when inserted in the cavity, the distance between a side of the inflatable bladder on the primary side and a side of the inflatable bladder on the secondary side. The depth of the cavity may be defined in the direction from the primary side to the secondary side.
The inflation valve may be positioned so that it lies on the outermost surface of the inflatable bladder when inserted in the cavity. This may allow for easy access to the valve so that a user can easily inflate/deflate the bladder, even when the bladder is inserted in the cavity. There may be two or more inflation valves. The inflation valve may be any suitable valve for the fluid being used.
The inflatable bladder may be for filling with air or any suitable gas. The inflatable bladder may be for filling with liquid or gel. Different filling materials may provide for different levels of cushioning.
The inflatable bladder may comprise a single compartment. Alternatively, the inflatable bladder may comprise two compartments, or two or more compartments, or three compartments, or three or more compartments, or four compartments, or four or more compartments. Each compartment may have one or more inflation valve. Different compartments may be for filling with different fluids.
There may be two or more inflatable bladders. Two or more bladders may be for inserting in one cavity.
There may be two or more cavities.
-4The body portion may comprise a molding composition. The molding composition may comprise any one or more of: Machine Mold; Simting solution; Dazzle fabric; lamination foam and/or EVA. These may be particularly suited so as not to easily deform significantly on repeated impact in a sports glove.
The inflatable bladder may comprise rubber. This may be particularly suited so as to be resilient, e.g. not to burst or substantially deflate on repeated impact in a sports glove. The inflatable bladder may comprise a gel rubber composition. The gel rubber composition may comprise any one or more of: Calcium; Butyl Bromo; Sion; Rubber; Carbon; Raison; MB2; PCR Calcium; Spring; Zinc; Sulphur; MBTS; MBT; PMTT; and/or Oil Spender. These may make the inflatable bladder particularly durable and/or resilient.
The sports glove may be a boxing glove. The body portion may have a shape that complements or mirrors the shape of a boxing glove.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a glove body insert for a sports glove, the sports glove comprising a glove body for receiving a hand of a person, the glove body comprising a palm portion and a dorsal portion, the palm portion extending between a first side and a second side of the glove body, and the dorsal portion extending between the first side and the second side of the glove body substantially opposite the palm portion, wherein the glove body insert is for inserting in at least the dorsal portion of the glove body for protecting the hand when received in the glove body, wherein the method comprises:
forming a body portion of the glove body insert; forming a cavity in at least one side of the body portion;
forming an inflatable bladder, the inflatable bladder comprising an inflation valve, the inflatable bladder for inserting in the cavity and having a complementary shape to that of the cavity when inflated, to substantially fill the cavity when inserted therein; and inserting the inflatable bladder in the cavity of the body portion.
Forming the body portion and forming the cavity may be carried out in a single step. Forming the body portion and/or forming the cavity may comprise using a mold, maybe a machine mold, in a molding process.
This method can provide for a glove body insert, and so sports glove, that is customisable. The user can inflate the inflatable bladder with air to a desired level and when inserted in the cavity of the body portion, it can provide the glove body insert, and so the sports glove to which it is inserted, with the desired level of cushioning. Since the
-5user can provide the sports glove with the desired level of cushioning, the cushioning can be customised to suit the personal preference of the user, and/or altered to suit the activity for which it is being used. The glove body insert manufactured by this method may also prevent the need for the user to buy several different pairs of sports gloves with different weights, or levels of cushioning, for the different activities.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of adjusting a cushioning level of a glove body insert for a sports glove, the sports glove comprising a glove body for receiving a hand of a person, the glove body comprising a palm portion and a dorsal portion, the palm portion extending between a first side and a second side of the glove body, and the dorsal portion extending between the first side and the second side of the glove body substantially opposite the palm portion, wherein the glove body insert is for inserting in at least the dorsal portion of the glove body for protecting the hand when received in the glove body, the glove body insert comprising: a body portion comprising a cavity in at least one side thereof; and an inflatable bladder comprising an inflation valve, the inflatable bladder for inserting in the cavity, the inflatable bladder having a complementary shape to that of the cavity when inflated, to substantially fill the cavity when inserted therein; the method comprising:
inflating the inflatable bladder to achieve a desired level of cushioning; and inserting the inflatable bladder in the cavity of the body portion of the glove body insert; or inserting the inflatable bladder in the cavity of the body portion of the glove body insert; and inflating the inflatable bladder to achieve a desired level of cushioning.
The method can provide for a glove body insert, and so sports glove, that is customisable. The user can inflate the inflatable bladder with air to a desired level and, when inserted in the cavity of the body portion, it can provide the glove body insert, and so the sports glove to which it is inserted, with the desired level of cushioning. Since the user can provide the sports glove with the desired level of cushioning, the cushioning can be customised to suit the personal preference of the user, and/or altered to suit the activity for which it is being used. The glove body insert being adjustable as such may also prevent the need for the user to buy several different pairs of sports gloves with different weights, or levels of cushioning, for the different activities.

The body portion 3 comprises a cavity 21 in the insert second side 13. The cavity 21 is a blind hole. The cavity 21 follows the contours of the body portion 3, at least the contours of the upper side 7 and lower side 9. In a side on profile from the insert second side 13 as can be seen in the figures, the body portion 3 has a crescent shape, ends of the crescent shape being substantially flat, and at least not pointed. In a side on profile from the insert second side 13 as can be seen in the figures, the cavity 21 is crescent shaped, ends of the crescent shape being substantially flat, and at least not pointed.
The body portion 3 has a section for directly covering the area of a hand between that level with the trapeziometacarpal joint and that level with the proximal interphalangeal joint when the glove body insert is in use in a sports glove and a hand is inserted in the sports glove, and the cavity is defined within this section
The width Wb of the body portion 3 extends between the insert first side 11 and the insert second side 13 and the depth D of the cavity 21 extends between approximately 50% and 95% of the way across the width Wb of the body portion 3.
The inflatable bladder 5 is for inserting in the cavity 21, and so the inflatable bladder 5 has a complementary shape to that of the cavity 21, to substantially fill the cavity 21 when substantially fully inflated and inserted therein. In a side on profile from the insert second side 9 as can be seen in the figures, when the inflatable bladder 5 is inserted in the cavity 21, the inflatable bladder 5 is also crescent shaped, ends of the crescent shape being substantially flat, and at least not pointed. When substantially fully inflated, the inflatable bladder 5 is a 3D crescent shape. The inflatable bladder 5 has a width Wi, which when inserted in the cavity 21, extends between approximately 50% and 95% of the way across the width Wb of the body portion 3.
The cross section of the cavity 21 is substantially the same along its depth D. The cross section of the bladder 5 is substantially the same along its width Wi.
The inflatable bladder 5 has a valve 23 on a side thereof, such that, when in use and the bladder 5 is inserted in the cavity 21, the valve 23 is accessible from the insert
-9second side 13. The inflatable bladder 5 can be inflated to any state between that of fully deflated and fully inflated. In a deflated state, the bladder 5 would provide little cushioning to the body portion 3 and so the glove body insert 1 and sports glove. In a fully inflated state, the bladder 5 would provide a greater level of cushioning to the body portion 3 and so the glove body insert 1 and sports glove.
When in use, the user can insert a pump, or otherwise, into the valve 23 and inflate the inflatable bladder 5 with air (or other fluid) to a desired inflation level. When inflated, the bladder 5 is inserted in the cavity 21 of the glove body insert 1 to provide the glove body insert 1, and so the sports glove to which it is inserted, with the desired level of cushioning. Of course, the inflatable bladder 5 can be inflated or deflated whilst in the cavity 21, by simply accessing the valve 23 from the insert second side 13 of the body portion 3 (on show when inserted in the cavity). Alternatively, the valve 23 may comprise a bung, or plug, or similar, that is removable from an aperture in the inflatable bladder 5. In this case, the inflatable bladder 5 can be inflated with air (or other fluid) by removing the bung, plug or similar from the bladder 5 and again using a pump, or otherwise, in the aperture to inflate the bladder 5 to a desired level. Once inflated to the desired level, the bung, plug or similar is reinserted in the aperture in the inflatable bladder 5.
Friction and/or a close fit between the bladder 5 and any inner surface 25 of the cavity 21 keeps the bladder in the cavity 21. Alternatively, the inflatable bladder 5 does not need to be inserted into body portion 3 at all, the body portion 3 alone providing a desired level of cushioning. Since the user can provide the sports glove with the desired level of cushioning, the cushioning can be altered to suit user preference and to suit the activity for which it is being used. The glove is advantageously customisable and this may prevent the need for the user to buy several different pairs of sports gloves with different weights, or levels of cushioning, for the different activities.
There is a method of manufacturing a glove body insert 1 for a sports glove, the sports glove as described herein. The glove body insert 1 is for inserting in at least the dorsal portion of the glove body for protecting the hand when received in the glove body, the glove body insert also as described herein. The method comprises forming a body portion 3 of the glove body insert 1, forming a cavity 21 in the insert second side 13 of the body portion 3, forming an inflatable bladder 5, and inserting the inflatable bladder 5 in the cavity 21 of the body portion 3, all parts as described herein.
Forming the body portion and forming the cavity may be carried out in a single
- 10step. Forming the body portion and/or forming the cavity may comprise using a mold, maybe a machine mold, in a molding process.
There is also a method of adjusting a cushioning level of a glove body insert 1 for a sports glove, the sports glove described herein. The glove body insert 1 is for inserting 5 in at least the dorsal portion of the glove body for protecting the hand when received in the glove body, the glove body insert also as described herein. The method comprises inflating the inflatable bladder 5 to achieve a desired level of cushioning and inserting the inflatable bladder 5 in the cavity 21 of the body portion 3 of the glove body insert 1.
Any one or more features mentioned in relation to one embodiment of the present 10 invention may apply to any other embodiment of the invention as appropriate and applicable.
The above embodiments are described by way of example only. Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
