SECURITY ELEMENT FOR A SHEET-LIKE PRINTED PRODUCT
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to the field of counterfeit protection of printed products, including plastic and paper products: banknotes, securities, documents, passport pages, identification documents, and bank cards.
Background of the Invention
A conventional technical solution used in the manufacture of securities is disclosed in WO 00/00356, 06.01.2000. The prior art relates to the protection of printed products from copying. Printing is made on transparent or semitransparent carriers, e.g. paper or polymer films. Periodic or almost periodic patterns consisting of points or lines are applied to both sides of the carriers. The patterns are formed on twosided printing machines ensuring exact registration of images on the front and back sides of the carriers. Periodic structures of thin lines are visualized at certain lighting and viewing angles. Minor offsets of the structure which are inevitable in forgery or copying cause moire effects in the image .
The disadvantage of this prior art is the necessity to observe exact registration of the front and back sides, which complicates the process of printing and forces the manufacturers to use expensive double-sided printing equipment thereby increasing the cost of products and the likelihood of defective products.
In a technical solution disclosed in EP1780682,
30.10.2006, layers with identification images are provided in a marked document and in a dedicated identifying device (filter) which must be brought into register with the surface of the marked document in the identification procedure. This solution is inconvenient in the case of mass printed products both in marking and verification of identification marks.
In the above prior art solutions formation of security elements is based on the use of multilayer transparent elements, in which rasterized images are formed on spaced apart surfaces of transparent layers. When such images are viewed in reflected or transmitted light various optical effects can appear due to the moire addition of the elements recorded in different layers of the images.
There are also known technical solutions for protection of plastic documents by making them in the form of multilayer thin-film structures, in which identification images and text are recorded in different layers and on opposite sides of polymer layers. The solutions provide the appearance of specific optical effects when the images and text are viewed at different viewing and lighting angles.
The most relevant prior art is described in patent RU
2503767, 10.01.2014. The patent provides a transparent or semitransparent data carrier protected from counterfeit by applying by printing methods an image rasterized by periodic line elements in the form of a grid with a predetermined period and thickness of lines on one side of the carrier, and a uniform line raster with the same period and thickness of lines on the other side of the carrier. The thickness and orientation of lines of the rasterizing grid in the rasterized image on the first side of the carrier and the uniform raster grid on the opposite second side of the carrier are identical, but the grids in the image and in the raster are spatially offset relative to each other at a distance less than the spatial period of the rasterizing grids. The distance is chosen such that the contrast of the observed image formed on the first side of the carrier changes with the angle of viewing.
The disadvantage of the prior art solution is that only the contrast of the visually observed image of the security element formed on the first side of the carrier changes with the viewing angle, which restrains the recognition capability of the security element. The rate of changing the contrast of the security element image may vary in the process of circulation of the printed product for various reasons, and authentication of the products becomes problematic.
Summary of the Invention
The object of the invention is to enhance the security level of printed products and valuable documents.
The object is attained by a security element for a printed sheet product, comprising a multilayer transparent structure with rasterized images which create an optically variable effect, wherein according to the invention the multilayer transparent structure comprises two different rasterized images disposed in one layer, and a line raster formed in the other layer, said layers being spaced apart at a distance determined by the resolution of the rasterized images, wherein different images are alternately seen when the security element is viewed in transmitted or reflected light at different angles.
The rasterized images can be made by a printing method, stamping method, by exposure to optical radiation in a photosensitive layer. The rasterized images can be portrait or other identification images.
The rasterized images can be graphic symbols or geometric figures, or text. The layers can be made of polymer, paper or composite materials. One or more rasterized images can be made using inks of different colors.
There is provided a valuable document comprising the inventive security element.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Fig. 1 shows layers of the inventive security element with rasterized images.
Fig. 2 shows schematically the path of light through the inventive security element when it is viewed at different angles .
Preferred Embodiment of the Invention
Consider an embodiment of the present invention.
Spatial periods and orientation of rasterizing grids in images of the first layer should be identical and coincide with the spatial period and orientation of the raster formed in the second layer. Spatial offset and duty cycle of rasterizing grids in the formed images must be different.
Particularly they will determine the extent of visibility of the images observed in transmitted light at a certain angle to the surface of the carrier. The contrast of the observed images will change with the viewing angle. One image will appear while the other image will disappear.
Fig. 1 shows a multilayer structure consisting of two transparent layers 1 and 2 lying one above the other at a distance h. Images of a circle 3 and a square 4 are formed on the upper surface of the layer 1. Spatial period d of rasterizing grids 5 and 6 is the same in both images. The figure depicts symmetric rasterizing line grids with line width L equal to half the grid period d. In a general case, the grids may be asymmetric as well. The spatial period and orientation of the rasterizing grids are identical and coincide with the spatial period and orientation of a raster grid 7 formed on the bottom side of the layer 2. When the images are viewed from the side of the upper layer 1 in light passing from the side of the layer 2 the rasterized images formed on the layer 1 will be seen with different contrast depending on the viewing direction and the magnitude of spatial offsets Δ5 and Δβ of the rasterizing grids 5 and 6 in the images of the circle 3 and the square 4, respectively.
Spatial offsets of the grids are determined from their offset relative to the raster grid 7 on the bottom side of the layer
2. The magnitude of the spatial period of the rasterizing grids should not exceed 100 pm (typically, it lies within the region from 20 to 50 pm) . In this case the human eye does not normally distinguish the periodic structure of the rasters.
Upon superimposing the rasterizing grids 5 and 6 in images 3 and 4 on the layer 1 and the raster grid 7 on the lower surface of layer 2 there occurs moire addition of them.
Fig. 2 shows the path of light through the rasterizing grid 5 of the circle image 3 when it is viewed at different angles. The grid 5 is disposed above the grid 7 of the raster formed on the layer 2. The magnitude of the spatial offset of the grid 5 relative to the grid 7 is equal to Δ5. When viewing in the direction 8, dark elements of the raster 5, which form the circle image on the layer 1, will be fully superimposed on the dark elements of the raster grid 7 on the lower surface of layer 2. When viewing in this direction, the circle 3 will be invisible. When the viewing direction changes to a direction 9 shown in Fig. 2 the dark elements of the rasters 5 and 7 are not superimposed and the image 3 rasterized by the grid 5 is contrastively visible. The viewing direction, in which the image 3 is visualized, is determined by angle oc3 which in accordance with Fig. 2 can be calculated by the formula:
oc3 = arctg ( (d+2 Δ5) /2h) .
Direction 8, in which no visualization of the image occurs, is determined by the angle oc0 = arctg (h5/h) .
The same consideration of the path of light can be made for the image 4 rasterized by the grid 6.
With an appropriate choice of values for the parameters d, h, Δ5, Δβ (where Δ5 and Δβ are offsets of the rasterizing
grids for the images 3 and 4 , respectively), it is possible to
ensure that at some viewing angle oc3 only the image 3 will be
visualized, and at angle 0C4 only the image 4 will be
visualized.
Therefore , the obj ect of the invention is attained,
particularly, the image itself, rather than just its contrast,
changes with the viewing angle . Using colored inks in
rasterizing the images, effects of appearance and
disappearance of images and effects of changing both the color and contrast can be attained with changing the viewing direction. With a proper choice of parameters of the rasterizing grids, not only spaced apart images can be formed, as shown in this embodiment of the invention, but also almost superimposed images with a small offset of rasterizing grids.
Saturation (optical density) of line elements of the grids and the grid duty cycle (width of line elements, Δ) may vary over the area of images thereby allowing visualization of grayscale images .
In a more general case, the images of the first layer and the raster on the second layer can be rasterized pixel by pixel, but this substantially complicates calculation of dimensions and positions of the rasterizing elements. Current digital printing technologies, that use computer imaging systems, are capable of forming images which disappear and appear at different viewing angles changing in azimuthal and meridional directions.
Industrial Applicability
The invention can be used in the field of counterfeit protection of printed products, including plastic and paper products: banknotes, securities, documents, passport pages, identification documents, and bank cards.
