Title
Dietary Supplement
Field of the Invention
The current invention relates to a dietary supplement for animals or pets. In particular, the current invention relates to a supplement for effectively preventing and/or treating common diseases in an animal or pet. The invention also relates to a supplement for providing a balanced diet in an animal or pet.
Background to the Invention
The field of veterinary supplementation is small but rapidly growing. Unfortunately, in recent years, there has been an increase in the occurrence of underlying health conditions in household pets, such as canines and felines. Pets often suffer as a result of curable diseases that their owners simply do not have the necessary resources to prevent or to treat. There are various factors which may be contributing to this surge, such as overbreeding, poor quality pet food and malnutrition.
Overbreeding and selective breeding can lead to a range of health problems in pets. For hundreds of years dogs have been cross-bread to produce new breeds, e.g. “toy dogs”. When two dogs are cross-bread to make a new breed, health problems can arise as a result. For example, pugs are known to suffer from bad ear infections and larger dogs, such as wolfhounds, tend to suffer from joint problems or heart problems.
A rise in the use of bagged pet food products has decreased the quality of some generic brands due to supply and demand pressures and the burden of mass production. Furthermore, many pet food products on the current market do not contain a sufficient amount of the essential nutrients that a pet requires and are often rich in crude proteins, which have a very low biological value.
A balanced diet is of vital importance for maintaining good health. It is an unfortunate reality that some pets are often mistreated and may be undernourished as a result. Over-nutrition is also a form of malnutrition which can be detrimental to a pet’s health. Over consumption of calories can lead to obesity in pets, which when combined with a lack of daily exercise, can increase the risk of developing disorders including diabetes, hypertension, cancer, musculoskeletal problems, cardiovascular disease and arthritis.
Thus it is clear that many pets are not receiving the correct type and/or amount of nutrients in their daily diet and are at risk of developing a number of diseases or conditions as a result. Commercial pet foods are simply not formulated with a specific treatment in mind. Furthermore, there are no dietary supplements for pets on the market that contain a sufficient amount of the vitamins and minerals required to provide a balanced diet whilst also preventing and/or treating disease. In addition, many pet owners find it difficult to administer a dietary supplement to a pet and pets are often reluctant to take tablets or pills. Perseverance can be stressful for both the pet and the owner with many owners choosing to omit a pet supplement from their pet’s diet as a result.
The current invention serves to alleviate these problems by providing a supplement for effectively preventing, treating and/or alleviating common diseases in animals or pets. The current invention provides a daily serving of the essential nutrients that a pet requires and that is not provided by their normal diet of dry or wet pet food. The supplement is provided in a manner that is easy to administer to a pet.

Detailed Description
The normal daily diet of animals and pets, such as canines and felines, often lacks a sufficient amount of the necessary nutrients required to maintain a balanced diet. This can increase the risk and occurrence of disease and underlying health conditions. The current invention provides a daily serving of essential vitamins and minerals combined with additional health boasting ingredients, which together, serve to effectively prevent, treat and/or alleviate common diseases and conditions in animals and pets.
In general terms, the composition of the invention comprises at least one supplement for joint health, at least one supplement for digestive health, at least one vitamin, at least one probiotic, at least one prebiotic and at least one mineral. It will be appreciate that the components of the composition may also have additional benefits than those stated.
When used as part of the daily diet of an animal or pet, the composition of the invention can be used to treat or alleviate the symptoms of one or more diseases or conditions. The disease or condition may be a joint condition. The disease or condition may be a digestive condition. The disease or condition may be a cardiovascular condition. The disease or condition may be obesity. The disease or condition may be a liver condition. The disease or condition may also be a urinary tract disease or kidney disease. The disease or condition may be a bone disease. The composition of the invention may also provide an energy boost.
The composition of the invention may be part of the daily diet of an animal or pet. It may be added to the pet’s usual pet food, preferably as a powder. By administering the composition in this manner, the pet does not realise that it has been included in the pet food and will ingest it at the same time as the pet food thereby allowing ease of administration. It will be appreciated that it can be administered any time of the day or night. Preferably, the composition is administered in the morning. The composition is for administration once a day.
In an embodiment of the invention, the supplement or composition of the invention may comprise at least one supplement for joint health. Animals can often suffer from degenerative joint conditions or osteoarthritis. Arthritis, in dogs is one of the most common health problems encountered by veterinarians. Early warning signs often go unnoticed as dogs will often ignore the soreness until the condition has progressed quite significantly at which point the dog will be in significant pain. Other joint conditions may be the result of an injury or an infection to a joint, a congenital disorder or cancer. Without being bound by theory, administering the composition according to the present invention to a pet or animal may also result in improved bone health, increased bone formation and reduces bone loss, which can be associated with age in animals. This provides better mobility in animals.
The at least one supplement for joint health may be from one to ten supplements, preferably from one and six supplements, including two, three, four and five supplements. The supplement for joint health of the present invention may be one or more of glucosamine sulphate, Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane (MSM), chondroitin sulphate, pine bark extract, flax seed oil powder, omega 3 DHA powder, L-glutamine and Llysine. The supplement for joint health my be one or more of glucosamine sulphate, Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane (MSM), chondroitin sulphate, pine bark extract, flax seed oil powder, omega 3 DHA powder, L-glutamine, L-Sysine, calcium, omega 6 and taurine. It will be appreciated that the composition may comprise all or any of the listed supplements. The amount present may be any amount that is an effective amount of same supplement. The supplements may be salts.
The supplement for joint health of the present invention may be glucosamine sulphate. Without being bound by theory, glucosamine sulphate may aids the smooth working of the joints. It can also help to maintain connective tissues. The supplement for joint health may be MSM. MSM can alleviate the pain or discomfort caused by arthritis or back pain by working as an anti-inflammatory. MSM is also considered to be a potentiator of vitamins, such as vitamin C, A, D and E, selenium by improving the uptake of these nutrients and prolongs their duration. It has also been suggested that MSM can provide protection against the onset of cancer and may improve glucose uptake thus balancing blood sugar levels and aiding normal functioning of the pancreas. The supplement for joint health may be chondroitin sulphate. This supplement acts to treat or alleviate the symptoms of osteoarthritis that results from breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. The supplement for joint health may be pine bark extract. Pine bark extract can help to treat arthritis by combating inflammation. It may also improve circulation. The supplement for joint health may be flaxseed oil, preferably flaxseed oil powder. Flaxseed oil comprises alpha-linoleic fatty acid and can lubricate joints and lessens joint pain. Flaxseed is also thought to provide a softer and shinier coat and to also protect the skin beneath the coat. The supplement for joint health may be omega 3, preferably omega 3 DHA (docosahexanoic acid) powder. The supplement for joint health may be omega 6. Omega 3 and omega 6 are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and have joint health benefits and may be used to treat arthritis.
