Switchgear housing
The invention relates to a switchgear housing for housing electrical components, which switchgear housing comprises:
- a parallelepiped shaped frame;
- a peripheral wall arranged on the frame providing at least one side of the frame with an access opening.
Such a switchgear housing is for example known from EP 2273634. This switchgear housing is provided with electrical components, which have terminals extending into a cable connection space. Here, the terminals of the electrical components are connected to electrical cables. Arc stabilizers are arranged between each pair of terminals with cables. These arc stabilizers are U-shaped profiles, which are fixed in the housing between each pair of terminals.
The arc stabilizers prevent created arcs to travel freely through the switchgear housing. The stabilizers stop the arcs in their path from a terminal or cable to a next adjacent terminal or cable.
In case the switchgear housing and the electrical components therein need to be serviced, the cables often need to be disconnected. However, the arc stabilizers limit the space around the cables to disconnect these cables. Therefore, such arc stabilizers typically need to be disassembled before any servicing can be done.
Also with the manufacturing and installation of the switchgear housing, the arc stabilizers of this prior art housing needs to be installed one by one after the cables have been connected to the terminals. If the arc stabilizers are not installed correctly, the chance on a malfunction within the switchgear housing can increase substantially.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to reduce or even remove the above mentioned disadvantages.
This object is achieved according to the invention with a switchgear housing according to the preamble, which is characterized by an arc mitigation module removably mounted in the access opening, wherein the arc mitigation module comprises at least three parallel sheets of metal or plastic for providing separation walls between at least two terminals of an electrical component mounted in the switchgear housing, wherein the at least three parallel sheets extend perpendicular from the side with the access opening.
With the switchgear housing according to the invention, the arc 5 mitigation module can be removed as a whole. So, in contrast to the prior art, only minor mounting means need to be disengaged to pull out the arc mitigation module, leaving as much space available around the terminals as possible.
The arc mitigation module can also be easily inserted back into the housing, and the parallel sheets of metal or plastic will ensure that each and every terminal with connected cable is sufficiently shielded from arcing of the other terminals.
In a preferred embodiment of the switchgear housing according to the invention the arc mitigation module comprises a front panel to which the at least three parallel sheets are arranged perpendicular and wherein the front panel is removably mounted to the frame in the access opening.
The front panel provides a cover for the terminals and connected cables and thus provides for increased safety. Furthermore, the front panel allows for easy mounting to the frame because the parallel sheets are arranged to the front panel.
In yet another embodiment of the switchgear housing according to the invention the arc mitigation module further comprises a bottom wall perpendicular arranged to both the front panel and the at least three parallel sheets, wherein the bottom wall is provided with slots open at the end distal from the front panel.
The bottom wall provides further stiffness to the arc mitigation module. The slots are provided, such that the module can be removed from the switchgear housing and be inserted into the switchgear housing, while the cables remain connected to the terminals.
In yet another embodiment of the switchgear according to the invention the front panel is provided with ventilation openings.
As typically high currents run through the electrical components in the switchgear, a sufficient ventilation is required in order to prevent too high temperatures in the housing. With ventilation openings provided in the front panel of the housing, the obstruction of the arc mitigation module is reduced as much as possible.
In yet another embodiment ofthe switchgear according to the invention, the arc mitigation module comprises mounting means, which mounting means engage on the frame for removably mounting the arc mitigation module in the access opening.
The invention also relates to a combination of a switchgear housing according to the invention, at least one electrical component mounted in the parallelepiped shaped frame, which electrical component has at least two terminals extending between the at least three parallel sheets and electrical cables arranged to the at least two terminals.
These and other features of the invention will be elucidated in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of an arc mitigation module for a switchgear housing according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows an embodiment of a switchgear housing according to the 15 invention with an arc mitigation module according to figure 1 in a first position.
Figure 3 shows the housing of figure 2 with the arc mitigation module in a second position.
Figure 1 shows an arc mitigation module 1 with five parallel metal sheets 2, which are perpendicular arranged to a front panel 3 and a bottom wall 4.
The front panel 3 is provided with ventilation openings 5, while the bottom wall 4 is provided with slots 6 opening away from the front panel 3.
Figure 2 shows a switchgear housing 10 with a parallelepiped shaped frame out of vertical profiles 11 and horizontal struts 12. The sides of the frame 11,12 are covered by a peripheral wall 13, while the front provides an access opening 14.
Electronic components 15 are arranged in the frame 11,12. The electronic components 15 have terminals 16 extending downward inside of the housing
10. Electric cables 17 are connected to these terminals 16.
In figure 2 the arc mitigation module 1 is shown in disassembled state, such that the parallel sheet 2 are not positioned between the terminals 16 and the electrical cables 17. In this position, the switchgear housing 10 can easily be maintained.
Figure 3 shows the switchgear housing 10 with the arc mitigation module in assembled state. The sheets 2 are positioned between the terminals 16 and electrical cables 17 to prevents generated arcs from traveling through the housing 10 and causing substantial damage.
The ventilation openings 5 as well as the slots 6 in the bottom wall 4 of 5 the arc mitigation module 1 allow for sufficient air flow to cool the electrical components 15 in the housing 10.
