Abstract
Items on the inside of a vehicle change appearance in response to ambient atmospheric or imposed conditions. Preferably the colour changes when dyed leather 3 or synthetic material on the items is exposed to changes in temperature, humidity or applied voltage. The item is preferably seat upholstery, door panel, dashboard 2 or steering wheel 11. The thermochromic dyes used allow for temperature dependent revealing of informative or graphic displays. For example, it might allow leather 3, in car interior 1, to change, from a darker colour to a lighter color, thermochromically between 12°C and 13°C.

AUTOMOTIVE INTERIORS
The present invention relates to automotive interiors and in particular covered components and displays for automotive interiors.
The thermochromic effect is one in which an object changes colour on heating. For instance zinc oxide is white at room temperature and yellow at elevated temperatures.
Thermochromic dyes exist. Generally the colour change dye is provided in microcapsules, and transported to and fixed in a material to be dyed by a carrier liquid.
Leather dyed with thermochromic dyes are known.
It is also known to apply a thermochromic layer that is opaque at room temperature and translucent at elevated temperature.
Thermochromic dyes are shown at:
https://www.sfxc.co.uk/collections/thermochromatic-thermochromic-pigments-ink- paint.
The object of the present invention is to provide improve automotive interiors.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided automotive interior component, the component being at least partially covered with covering material the appearance of which changes with ambient atmospheric conditions or imposed conditions.
Whilst the covering material can be synthetic, preferably it is leather. Normally the appearance change will be a colour change.
In the preferred embodiment, the covering material is thermochromically dyed or coloured with the result that on heating of the component ambient atmospherically, ohmically or otherwise, its colour changes.
Alternatively, the covering material can be dyed or coloured with humidity colour change dye, whereby on ambient humidity change, the component changes colour.
In another alternative, the covering material can be dyed or coloured with a substance whose colour changes with voltage applied to it.
The thermochromic colour change temperature of the covering material can be below normal ambient temperature, typically between 8°C and 18°C and preferably between 10°C and 15°C, whereby the appearance of the covered component changes to a normal use colour on heating of the automotive interior to its normal use temperature and below the colour change temperature the component exhibits a colour indicating that it is cold.
The component can be upholstery of a seat or a door panel or a dashboard or a steering wheel or the like or a part thereof.
Whilst we envisage that an entire component, or at least a covered part of it, can be covered in thermochromic dyed material, a part only of it can be so covered, with another part being covered in normally dyed material, with the result that on heating of the component, a contrast between the parts appears.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided an automotive display comprising:
• a substrate having means for heating a display part thereof and • thermochromically dyed covering material on the substrate, the arrangement such that on heating of the display part of the substrate, the covering material changes colour and the display is visible.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided an automotive display comprising:
• an at least partially heatable substrate and • a covering material at least partially thermochromically dyed with thermochromic dye applied either:
• as a body colour with a face colour dye selectively applied to reveal a display when the substrate is heated to change the body colour or • as a face colour selectively applied to reveal in a positive or negative manner a display when the substrate is heated to change the body colour.
In the second alternative, in which the thermochromic face colour dye is selectively applied to a first, positive or negative area of the covering material and a further ordinary, or indeed contrasting thermochromic, dye can be applied to a second, negative or positive area of the covering material.
Advantageously the colours of the body dye and of the face dye or dyes will the same in the absence of heating of the substrate, in particular, where the first and second areas do not extend completely to the area of the covering material.
It should be noted that in respect to the second and third aspect, the display can be either an informative display such as clock hands or remaining journey distance or a graphic display such as a car manufacturer’s logo or an owner’s heraldic device.
To help understanding of the invention, specific embodiments thereof will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a dashboard covered in accordance with the invention when cold;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the dashboard when warm;
Figure 3 is an elevation of a steering wheel covered in accordance with the invention and
Figure 4 is cross-sectional view through a boss of the steering wheel.
Referring to Figure 1, in a first embodiment of the invention, a car interior 1 has a dashboard 2 covered in thermochromically dyed leather 3.
The colour change temperature of the leather is 12°C to 13°C. Below that temperature its appearance is dark green, indicating that the car’s interior is uncomfortably cold. Once the engine is switched on and the car is heated to 18°C, for instance, the dashboard changes to a lighter, more welcoming green, indicating that the car is comfortably warm.
In a second embodiment, shown in Figure 3 and 4, the steering wheel 11 of the car has a tooled graphic device 12 at the centre of its boss 14. The leather 15 covering the boss is thermochromically dyed, and has a colour change temperature of 25°C, that is above the normal air-conditioned temperature of the car. A back moulding 15 of the boss has a low wattage heating element 16, which warms the leather when the ignition switch is ON, whereby the graphic device appears more prominently when the car is being driven.
In a variant, the embossed region 17 of the device is of a separate, let in, thermochromically dyed leather, whereby it changes to a different colour from the surrounding leather 18, which can also be thermochromic leather.
In a further variant, a marginal region 19 of the surrounding leather has an ordinary dye applied to the face of the leather to limit the colour change to the let-in and surrounding leather 17,18, which then have crisply defined edges to their colour change.
The invention is not intended to be limited to the details of the above described embodiment. For instance the colour change can be brought about by humidity change, as in the manner of humidity colour change strips, whereby the colour of the leather indicates the internal humidity of the car.
Further the colour change can be brought about by the same effect as in electroluminescent paint.
