Description
This invention is in the field of electronics and relates to a device for making an electrical connection to a closed circuit cable.
When dealing with a closed-circuit cable already in use, conducting circuit testing usually involves stripping part of the cable insulation to attach testing equipment. Currently available devices either require the user to hold one or more connectors in contact with the exposed wires, or connect by means of a crocodile clip or similar. When dealing with high voltages, the former can prove dangerous and means that the user is unable to operate anything further. Crocodile clips, by virtue of their shape and the use of a spring mechanism, often damage exposed wires when engaged. Furthermore, it is not always possible to maintain a secure connection, particularly when the connection is being made to a large gauge cable.
The present invention aims to overcome these problems by providing a secure yet reversible means of connecting to a closed-circuit cable causing minimal damage to the internal braiding.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a device suitable for making an electrical connection to a closed-circuit cable, comprising a block possessing a channel profiled to receive the cable and a means to frictionally retain the cable in contact with the surface of the block, wherein at least part of the block and/or the means to frictionally retain the cable are electrically conductive.
Preferably, the channel is substantially v-shaped, with the device overall adopting the shape of a g-clamp whereby the exposed wires are secured in the channel using a threaded screw mechanism or similar. As such, the device is not limited to narrow gauge cables and may be used to connect to larger gauge cables such as those frequently utilised in high-voltage systems.
A screw mechanism provides a secure yet reversible means to hold the cable in place, with minimal damage to the exposed wires. It can easily be operated by hand, where the screw mechanism is capped with an insulating knob for ease of manipulation, akin to a thumb screw. Alternatively, the means to retain the wire could take the form of a ratchet mechanism which similarly could be adjusted to house any thickness of cable.
To improve the grip on the cable the channel may possess a number of projections. If these projections are formed of the same conductive material as the channel, they may pierce the insulation and make electrical contact with the wires. This provides the additional advantage of removing the need to strip the wire but can only be functional where the structure of the cable and nature of the wires allow. The conductivity of the device enables test equipment to be connected to the closed circuit cable. The device is suitable for use with high voltage cables,
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the attached drawings:
Figure 1, which shows an exploded view of the connector.
Figure 2, which shows the connector as assembled.
A copper conductor with a recessed channel 4 is housed in a plastic housing 3 and 5, which is held together by countersunk screws 6 and 7. A threaded shaft 2 is topped with a plastic knob 1 to form a thumb screw, can be used to hold a wire in place in the copper channel 4. In use, a stripped length of closed-circuit wire would be secured in channel 4 by means of tightening threaded shaft 2 using knob 1. By virtue of the channel created by aperture 8 and 9, a secondary cable can be inserted into the device to create an electrical connection with conductor 4. This can be used as a means to connect an additional device such as test equipment.
