Abstract
Portable functional magnetic resonance imaging ( fMRI ) monitoring system consisting of a head mounted device, portable monitoring device and testing device for measuring significant neural activity via changes in blood flow in the ACC (anterior cingulate cortex) and Amygdala regions of the human brain following a number of visual & auditory tests to ascertain the emotions of a subject. The results of such tests may be used to determine racial bias in individuals. The monitoring and testing devices may be conventional video display screens. The head mounted device may include a number of receptors for sensing brain activity. The three devices may communicate wirelessly with each other.
Description
Technical Field of the Invention
Research by Elizabeth Phelps and colleagues at New York University (US) believe they have uncovered one of the brain pathway involved in determining reactions to faces of different races. This research provides some intriguing insights into our views of different racial groups. Using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging), Phelps and her team have discovered a network of interconnected brain regions that are more active in the brain of white participants in response to a picture of a black face than to a white face.
When we look at faces of individuals of a different race, a part of our brain called the Amygdala often gets active. The amygdala is involved in learning and, specifically, in a type of learning called fear conditioning-tracking what kinds of things predict bad outcomes, much like a rat learning that a specific tone will lead to an electric shock. Essentially, its job is to figure out what parts of the environment are threatening and remind us to stay away from them.
The ACC (anterior cingulate cortex) is commonly reported to be active in tasks that involve conflict. This region is commonly activated in tests such as the ‘stroop test’: this involves naming the font colour of written words which either agree (BLUE) or disagree (BLUE). In this case, the ACC is active during the second conflicting task. The significance of the above research is of relevance to this invention as the significant activity observed in the ACC and Amygdala regions of the brain is applicable not only to the white race, but all races and hence monitoring this brain activity can help ascertain racial biases in all races.
Background of the Invention
Functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, is a technique for measuring brain activity. It works by detecting the changes in blood oxygenation and flow that occur' in response to neural activity - when a brain area is more active it consumes more oxygen and to meet this increased demand, blood flow increases to the active area. fMRI can be used to produce activation maps showing which parts of the brain are invol ved in a particular mental process.
The disclosed invention adopts a new and unique alternative to fMRI technology to create the test results from the test procedures executed by the portable monitoring system. The disclosed invention or portable monitoring system is made up of three core parts, namely. the testing device, the head mounted device and the portable monitoring device. The test subject or Individual being tested forms the fourth part of the system and wears the head mounted device to facilitate the wireless flow of information from the test subject to the portable monitoring device.
In one embodiment, the testing device can take the form of a personal computer, smartphone, personal digital assistant, smart television or game console. The necessary software for executing the test procedures would be installed on the above named hardware.
In the same embodiment, the portable monitoring device can also take the form of a personal computer, smart phone, personal digital assistant, smart television or game console. The necessary software for creating the test results would be installed on the above named hardware.
In the above embodiment, the head mounted device could take the form of a bespoke hardware configured to communicate wirelessly with the testing device and the portable monitoring device.
In another embodiment, the testing device, the head mounted device and the portable monitoring device can all be bespoke hardware designed to communicate wirelessly with each other as part of one wireless system.
In all embodiments, wireless communications triangufation exists between the testing device, the head mounted device and the portable monitoring device.
Testing Device (Wireless Device)
Central for executing the visual and auditory tests created by psychometric experts to determine the racia l biases of individuals. The testing device is made up of an information or video display which may be a plasma screen, LCD screen, holographic screen, virtual reality screen or other projection type screen and sound speakers for communicating the sounds accompanying the visual aspects of the tests. Hence the testing device provides a full audio visual communication of the tests to the test subject, or individual.
The testing device is the starting point of the system. The test subject receives the test information through Iris or her eyes and ears and provides a corresponding input to the head mounted device wirelessly.
The test subject wears the head mounted device on their head through out the execution of the test procedures. The testing device executes the test procedures. The testing device also validates the test results against the test procedures it executed.
Head Mounted Device (Wireless Device)
The test information received through the test subject’s eyes and ears stimulates the ACC (anterior cingulate cortex) and. Amygdala regions of the test subject’s brain in such a way as to ascertain the racial biases of the test subject. The receipt of the stimulation inpu t to the above regions of the test subject’s brain is wirelessly received by the head moun ted device.
The head mounted device transmits the. stimulation input (from the ACC and Amygdala regions of the test subject’s brain) to the portable monitoring device wirelessly.
The head mounted device hence acts a bridge between the testing device and the portable rnoni tori ng device.
The head mounted device consists of receptors physically touching the human head with, particular focus on receptors touching the parts of the human head directly facing the ACC and Amygdala regions of the test subject’s brain. The receptors contain sensors for sensing the significan t brain activity in the ACC and Amygdala regions of the test subject’s brain . These sensors facilitate the creation of brain maps for the regions emitting the significant-brain activity.
The head mounted device in one embodiment can have a mesh type frame made up of flexible connectors and receptors and a miniature wireless transmitter to send stimulation input to the portable monitoring device.
Portable Monitoring Device (Wireless Device)
The portable monitoring device wirelessly receives the stimulation input from the miniature wireless transmitter connected to the head mounted device and converts the stimulation input into test results.
These test results can take the form of detailed graphs, text information, summary reports and brai n scans which will help the user of the system to make an informed decision on the racial biases of the test subject.
These test results also correspond to the test procedures executed by the testing device. The test procedures are designed to output a specific set of test results. Hence the system starts with the execution of the test procedures by the testing device and ends with the production of the specific test results by the portable monitoring device.
The portable monitoring device sends a test results validation request to the testing device to validate against the test procedures executed.
Additionally, the various embodiments set forth herein are described in terms of exemplary7 block diagrams, flow charts and other illustrations. As will become apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art after reading this document, the illustrated embodiments and their various alternatives can be implemented without confinement to the illustrated examples. For example, block diagrams and their accompanying description should not be construed as mandating a particular architecture or configuration.
