A SPORTS SOCK OR UNDERSOCK
The present invention relates to a sports sock or undersock for use inter alia when playing ball games such as football, rugby and hockey. It is to be understood that these are simply examples of a wide range of sports activities for which socks in accordance with the invention can be used.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
At present when playing ball games where impacts on the legs or ankles of players occur, or are likely to occur, it is conventional for the participants to employ shin and other impact absorbing pads held to their legs by knitted or woven socks or undersocks.
Such pads are removed following conclusion of a game and are often mislaid or lost when the players, especially children, are changing into their day to day wear or after the socks have been separated from the pads for purposes of washing.
One object of this invention is to provide a sports sock or undersock which includes one or more pads which are integral with the sock or undersock. This not only eliminates occasions when a shin or other impact absorbing pad is separated from a player's sock or undersock but also provides a single item of apparel in place of two or more items.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION
According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided a sports sock or undersock of a knitted or woven material which includes one or more protective pads of an impact absorbing material bonded to a backing sheet of an elastomeric mesh materal secured permanently to the knitted or woven material of the sock, the protective pads being positioned to protect, in use, the shin and/or calf and/or metatarsal achilles regions of the wearer's legs.
The elastomeric mesh material of the or each backing sheet preferably comprises silicone rubber.
The impact absorbing material is preferably an elastomeric material and may comprise a thermoplastic elastomer; alternatively the material may comprise a foam material such as plyurethane or polystyrene.
In another aspect, the present invention provides a method of producing a sports sock or undersock of a knitted or woven material which includes one or more protective pads of an energy absorbing material which is/are secured permanently to the knitted or woven material of the sock, the method comprising the steps of producing by an injection moulding process one or more protective pads of an energy absorginb material each bordered on all sides by a backing sheet of a mesh produced from an elastomeric material which extends beyond the borders of the or each protective pad, producing one or more fabric, knitted or woven sock pattern pieces and securing the or each such pattern piece once cured by a sewing or similar method to the or each backing piece to produce a finished sports sock or undersock with one or more built-in protective pads .
The or each protective pad and the or each backing sheet is preferably produced from silicone rubber.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:Figure 1 is a scematic perspective view of a sock or undersock in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 is a plan view of an injection moulded pad and and backing sheet from which the sock or undersock of Figure 1 is produced.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED INVENTION
The sports sock or undersock illustrated in Figure 1 is typically produced from a knitted or woven material and includes protective pads 10, 12 of an impact absorbing material positioned to provide protection for the shin and calf areas of the leg of the wearer. The energy absorbing material is preferably an elastomeric material such as a thermoplastic elastomer or a foam material such as polyurethane or polystyrene.
Ridges 14 of the same or similar material are also secured to the sole area of the sock. As mentioned below, the pads 10, 12 and 14 are formed integrally with the knitted or woven material 18 of the sock and cannot be removed from the sock or undersock other than by destroying the integrity of the sock or undersock.
Other protective pads may be positioned permanently within the sock or undersock to protect other areas for the user's legs, for example the achilles and/or metatarsal areas .
The energy absorbing material is preferably silicone rubber. Silicone rubber is an elastomer composed of silicone in itself a polymer - containing silicon together with carbon hydrogen and oxygen. Such rubbers are often one or two part polymers and may contain fillers to improve properties.
The individual pads 10, 12 and ridges 14 are produced by an injection moulding process in which an elastomeric material such as silicone rubber is introduced into suitably shaped moulds each of which is lined on one side with a mesh sheet 16 (see Figure 2) produced from an elastomeric material such as silicone rubber.
During the injection moulding process, the injected elastomeric material passes into the mesh of the sheets 16 and following curing becomes permanently secured thereto.
Thus, as will be seen from Figure 2, once the moulding and pursuant curing operations have been completed and the formed pad is removed from the respective mould, each pad or ridge piece comprises a suitably shaped pad from the borders of which extends a mesh sheet.
The individual pad pieces are then attached to preformed knitted pattern pieces by sowing or otherwise securing such pieces to the borders of each mesh sheet 16 to form the finished sock or undersock. Thus, in the finished sock, the preformed knitted pieces overlie and are secured to the mesh borders of the shaped pads.
Each leg area to be protected requires a differently shaped pad each produced in the manner described above.
In an unillustrated embodiment, the socks when produced as described above are secured to foot ware such as boots to form a single item comprising a sports sock and a boot or the like. Thus, the formed socks may include mesh pieces as described to which the relevant items of foot ware may be secured.
Furthermore, side straps may be secured to the socks during the manufacturing process.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary of sports socks and undersocks in accordance with the invention and that modifications can readily be made thereto without departing from the true scope of the invention.
