Referring to figures 1 to 9 and a first embodiment of the present invention there is provided an item of food packaging 1 having a cardboard collar 2 and a paper bag 3.
Cardboard collar 2 is attached to paper bag 3 by means of adhesive and is located adjacent opening 4 of paper bag 3.
Cardboard collar 2 comprises first side panel 5, second side panel 6, third side panel 7, fourth side panel 8, attachment tab 9, first lid part 10 and second lid part 11.
Second side panel 6 comprises a first portion 6a and a second portion 6b that are foldably hinged to each other by straight fold line 16.
Similarly fourth side panel 8 comprises a first portion 8a and a second portion 8b that are foldably hinged to each other by straight fold line 17.
First side panel 5 is foldably hinged to the first portion 6a of second side panel 6 by arcuate fold line 12 such that edge of first side panel 5 is slightly concave and edge of second side panel 6 is slightly convex.
Second portion 6b of second side panel 6 is foldably hinged to third side panel 7 by arcuate fold line 13 such that edge of third side panel 7 is slightly concave and edge of second side panel 6 is slightly convex.
Third side panel 7 is foldably hinged to first portion 8b of fourth side panel 8 by arcuate fold line 14 such that edge of third side panel 7 is slightly concave and edge of fourth side panel 8 is slightly convex.
Second portion 8b of fourth side panel 8 is foldably hinged to attachment tab 9 by arcuate fold line 15 such that edge of attachment tab 9 is slightly concave and edge of fourth side panel 8 is slightly convex.
Second and fourth side panels 6 and 8 are of substantially the same rectangular dimensions and constitute a first pair of opposing side panels.
First and third side panels 5, 7 are of substantially the same rectangular dimensions and constitute a second pair of opposing side panels.
On first side panel 5 and perpendicular to arcuate fold line 12 first lid part 10 is foldably hinged to first panel 5 by arcuate fold line 20 such that edge of first side panel 5 is slightly concave and edge of first lid part 10 is slightly convex.
Similarly on third side panel 7 and perpendicular to arcuate fold lines 13, 14 second lid part 11 is foldably hinged to third panel 7 by arcuate fold line 23 such that edge of third side panel 7 is slightly concave and edge of second lid part 11 is slightly convex.
At its free edge 18 that is opposite hingeable fold line 20 first lid part 10 comprises a projection 19.
Similarly at its free edge 22 that is opposite hingeable fold line 23 second lid part 11 comprises a recess 22.
Projection 19 is adapted to be retained by recess 22 when lid parts 10,11 are in use so as to releasably lock lid parts 10,11 together.
When cardboard collar 2 is assembled attachment tab 9 is adhered to first side panel 5 such that first to fourth side panels 5, 6, 7, 8 form a loop.
Item of food packaging 1 is created by attaching cardboard collar 2 to paper bag 3 using adhesive on the inward faces of side panels 5, 5, 7, 8 of cardboard collar 2.
In the present embodiment cardboard collar 2 is attached to paper bag 3 at a point adjacent opening 4 of paper bag 3 such that side panels 5, 6, 7, 8 are spaced from opening 4.
Respective free edges 18, 19 of first and second lid parts 10, 11 are substantially flush with opening 4 of paper bag 3.
Paper bag 3 comprises a perforation 26 adjacent cardboard collar 2 in between cardboard collar 2 and bottom 27 of paper bag 3. In the present embodiment perforation 26 encircles paper bag 3 such that two separate parts of item of food packaging 1 of roughly similar dimensions are defined on each side of perforation 26.
Item of food packaging 1 may be provided to a user in a flat packed configuration as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 4. In such a configuration opening 4 of paper bag 3 is substantially closed.
In its flat packed configuration of second pair of side panels 6, 8 of item of food packaging 1 are folded at hingeable fold lines 16, 17 such that: i) first portion 6a of second side panel 6 and second portion 8b of fourth side panel 8 are both substantially in the same plane as first side panel 5; and ii) second portion 6b of second side panel 6 and first portion 8a of fourth side panel 8 are both substantially in the same plane as third side panel 7.
In this configuration first and second portions 6a, 6b of second side panel 6 lie flat against each other, first and third side panels 5, 7 lie flat against each other, first and second portions 8a, 8b of second side panel 8 lie flat against each other, and lid parts 10, 11 lie flat against each other (albeit with all of these panels and lid parts separated by paper bag 3).
As illustrated in Figure 5 a user is able to convert item of food packaging 1 from its flat packed configuration to a second configuration wherein side panels 5, 6, 7, 8 of cardboard collar 2 are in a substantially rectangular configuration and opening 4 of paper bag 3 allows access to the interior of paper bag 3.
In order to effect the change from a flat packed configuration to a configuration wherein first pair of opposing side panels 6, 8 hold second pair of opposing side panels 5, 7 such that they are spaced apart from each other a user simply grasps item of food packaging 1 and squeezes first pair of opposing side panels 6, 8 towards each other.
When such force is applied first and second portions 6a, 6b of second side panel 6 hinge relative to each other at fold line 16 such that instead of lying flat against each other they straighten such that they are substantially in the same plane as each other.
Similarly first and second portions 8a, 8b of fourth side panel 8 hinge relative to each other at fold line 17 such that instead of lying flat against each other they straighten such that they are substantially in the same plane as each other.
First pair of opposing side panels 6, 8 enter a configuration wherein they are substantially parallel to each other and both are substantially perpendicular to second pair of opposing side panels 5, 7.
Owing to first pair of opposing side panels 6, 8 being hinged at arcuate fold lines 12, 13, 14, 15 side panels 6, 8 may each assume concavely curved form such that they retain the second pair of opposing side panels 5, 7 such that they are spaced apart from each other without pressure being applied to the first pair of opposing side panels by a user.
A user may then insert food into item of food packaging 1.
In order to lock second pair of opposing side panels 5, 7 such that they are spaced apart from each other and in order to seal opening 4 to paper bag 3 a user may then fold first and second lid parts 10, 11 towards each other and lock them together by engaging projection 19 with recess 22.
Owing to first and second lid parts 10, 11 being hinged at arcuate fold lines 20, 23 lid parts 10,11 may together assume concavely curved form so as to strengthen the lid.
As illustrated in Figure 6, owing to first and second lid parts 10, 11 are substantially flush with opening 4 of paper bag 3 respective triangular folds 24, 25 may be formed at opening 4 of paper bag 3 above second and fourth side panels 6, 8. Triangular folds 24, 25 hinder spillage of food from item of food packaging 1.
Turning to Figures 8 and 9 it may be seen that if desired a user is able to remove a portion 29 of paper bag 3 by tearing along perforation 26 so as to allow access to food held within cardboard collar 2 and supported by lid parts 10,11. In Figure 9 a burger 28 is illustrated.

Part-line of weakness 49a extends from point 58 through third side panel 52, second side panel 51 and first side panel 50 to meet an edge of first side panel 50 at a point 64 adjacent to, but spaced from, hinge 63 that connects first side panel 50 to first lid part 55. Through first side panel 50 part-line of weakness 49a is substantially parallel to hinge 63.
Part-line of weakness 49b has an end that terminates at a point 59 located at an edge 61 of third side panel 52 opposed to the edge 62 of side panel 52 adjoining second lid part 56.
Part-line of weakness extends from point 59 through third side panel 52, fourth side panel 53 and through part of attachment tab 54 to meet incision 65 that extends from an edge of attachment tab 54 at a point that is found adjacent to part-line of weakness 49a on edge of first side panel 50 when the item of packaging is assembled.
Points 58 and 59 are spaced apart from each other so as to define a tab 60 that may protrude slightly from the line of edge 61 to aid a user in grasping tab 60.
When assembled bag 57 is attached by means of adhesive to parts of side panels 50, 51, 52, 53. Part-lines of weakness 49a, 49b together form a coherent line of weakness that extends around collar 48 such that collar 48 is separable into two distinct parts.
In use, and as illustrated in Figures 19 to 21 a user may grasp tab 60 so as to separate along line of weakness 49 the lid 55, 56 and part of the first and second pairs of side panels 50, 51, 52, 53 from a remainder of the first and second pairs of side panels 50, 51, 52, 53 that are attached to bag 57.
Turning to a sixth embodiment of the present invention and Figures 22 to 26, an item of food packaging an item of food packaging made in accordance with the present invention may instead of having a collar adjacent to the main upper opening of a bag and a lid to lock a pair of side panels in a spaced-apart configuration may have instead a collar adjacent to a base of the bag and a base to lock a pair of side panels in a spaced-apart configuration.
Item of food packaging 66 comprises a cardboard collar 67 and a bag 68.
Collar 67 comprises a first side panel 69, second side panel 70, third side panel 71, fourth side panel 72, first attachment tab 73, second attachment tab 74 and base 75.
First side panel 69 is hingedly attached at a first side edge to second side panel 70 and is hingedly attached at a second side edge to fourth side panel 72.
First side panel 69 is also hingedly attached along an arcuate lower edge to base panel 75, which in turn is hingedly attached to an arcuate lower edge of third side panel 71.
Second and fourth side panels 70, TI each comprise a central hinge such that second panel is divided into first and second portions 70a, 70b and fourth panel is divided into first and second portions 72a, 72b.
Base panel 75 also comprises a hinge that is slightly offset from centre, but that divides base panel 75 into first and second portions 75a, 75b.
Extending from second portion 70b of second panel 70 is first attachment tab 73 configured to attach second panel 70 to third panel 71.
Similarly, extending from second portion 72b of fourth panel TI is second attachment tab 74 configured to attach fourth panel TI to third panel 71.
When assembled first, second third and fourth side panels are arranged in a similar configuration to the side panels of each of the other embodiments of the present invention described herein, with second and fourth side panels 70, TI constituting a first pair or opposing side panels and first and third side panels 69, 71 constituting a second pair of opposing side panels.
First and third side panels 69, 71 are of a size so as to extend from base 75 substantially to the main opening 76 of bag 69 at an upper end thereof.
In the present embodiment third side panel 71 extends slightly beyond opening 76 of bag 69 and comprises a convex distal edge 77 to act as a scoop for foodstuffs such as fries.
In contrast first side panel 69 does not extend beyond opening 76 of bag 69 and comprises a concave distal edge 78 to aid a user using side panel 71 as a scoop.
Just as with the other embodiments of the present invention in order to effect the change from a flat packed configuration as illustrated in Figures 23 and 24 to a configuration wherein first pair of opposing side panels 70, 72 hold second pair of opposing side panels 69, such that they are spaced apart from each other as illustrated in Figures 25 and 26 a user simply grasps item of food packaging 66 and squeezes first pair of opposing side panels 70, towards each other.
A user may then use base 75 to lock second pair of side panels 69, 71 in a spaced apart configuration by applying pressure to base 75 such that panels 75a, 75b hinge relative to each other and base panel 75 adopts a concave formation, arching upwards towards bag 68.
In all other embodiments described herein the bag is sealed at a lower end. However, in this embodiment bag 68 may, if so desired so as to reduce the material used and/or manufacturing costs, be open at the bottom such that it is effectively a tube as base 75 may act to prevent food spillage from any opening at the bottom of bag 68.
It will of course be apparent that differently sized cardboard collars and paper bags may be used in conjunction with each other. Thus a paper bag may be much longer than a collar, for example with a bag that is adapted to house a baguette. In other embodiments a cardboard collar may be of a similar size to the paper bag.
Lines of weakness may be provided by perforations or other suitable means such as scores or tear strips.
Although in the present embodiments the bag is formed of paper and the collar has been formed of cardboard it will be apparent that any other suitable materials may be used such as plastic film and corrugated flute.
Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
