Abstract

255,290. Fornaca, G. Nov. 17, 1925. Springs, arraragement of; guiding vertical play. -In a suspension for the front or steering wheels of motor vehicles in which the steering pivots of the stub-axles slide vertically, under spring control, in supports at the ends of an axle fixed to the vehicle frame, each steering pivot is mounted in its support by means of two bushes which, when the pivot tends to assume an oblique position in the support owing to play between the parts, rock on the pivot so that the thrust on the support is distributed over a surface sufficiently large to keep the stress per unit area within a suitable limit. The axle 1 constituting the front cross-member of the vehicle frame is formed at each end with a vertical support 2 carrying bushes 4 in which the pivot 3 is adapted to slide under the control of a spring 9 connected at 8 to the pivot and secured at 10 to the frame. The bushes, which are prevented from movement axially of the pivot by collars 5, are formed with double conical bores to permit them rocking on the pivot. In a modification, the bores of the bushes are cylindrical but the pivot is formed with tapering surfaces as shown in Fig. 3. The member 6 carrying the stub-axle 7 is rotatably mounted on the ends of the pivot 3.
