Abstract
A bracket 1 for mounting devices relating to animal handling, dosing, moving and lifting to a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure. The bracket 1 comprises an extendable bar 2 with at least one clamp 3 on each end of the extendable bar 1. This allows devices to be mounted to the cattle crush or gate in a stable manner and may fit bars of cattle crushes or gates that are differently spaced apart. The clamps 3 may surround bars of cattle crushes or gates and have two plates (4a, 4b, figure 7) to receive the extendable bar 2. The plates (4a, 4b, figure 7) may have holes (5a, 5b, figure 7) to receive pins (8, figure 7). Each clamp may have a pivotally mounted flange (6, figure 7) to encompass a bar of the cattle crush or gate. Also disclosed are methods for use of the apparatus.
Description
(54) Title of the Invention: Mounting bracket apparatus and methods of use thereof Abstract Title: Mounting bracket apparatus and methods of use thereof (57) A bracket 1 for mounting devices relating to animal handling, dosing, moving and lifting to a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure. The bracket 1 comprises an extendable bar 2 with at least one clamp 3 on each end of the extendable bar 1. This allows devices to be mounted to the cattle crush or gate in a stable manner and may fit bars of cattle crushes or gates that are differently spaced apart. The clamps 3 may surround bars of cattle crushes or gates and have two plates (4a, 4b, figure 7) to receive the extendable bar 2. The plates (4a, 4b, figure 7) may have holes (5a, 5b, figure 7) to receive pins (8, figure 7). Each clamp may have a pivotally mounted flange (6, figure 7) to encompass a bar of the cattle crush or gate. Also disclosed are methods for use of the apparatus.

Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a mounting bracket apparatus for use in conjunction with a conventional cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure. In particular there is provided a mobile, multi-use mounting bracket apparatus which allows attachment of various farm devices to a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure.
Background to the Invention
Cattle crushes are used on the majority of modern farms, performing a number of functions to assist in the day to day management of the cattle herd. The crush comprises an internal passageway having horizontal bars along both sides of the passageway which are typically supported by a number of vertical upright bars or posts. Often a farmer may need to attach additional devices to an animal crush, such as animal handling devices. In some circumstances it is necessary to use a mounting bracket to assist the attachment of an animal handling device to a crush, gate or similar structure. Such mounting brackets comprise a curved base at one end of the mounting bracket which is placed at one bar of a crush and a second curved base at the opposite end of the mounting bracket which is placed at another bar of the crush. The curved bases typically sit against one face of the bar of a crush and do not surround the bar. In activating such mounting brackets both curved bases of the mounting bracket are pulled together using force, such as with a ratchet and strap. It is typical of these mounting brackets that the curved bases are not secured to the bars of the crush and rely on force to pull the two curved bases together to fix the mounting bracket in place. Unfortunately, often such mounting brackets do not attach firmly to the bars of the crush and are likely to move or slip when force is applied.
Therefore, there is a need for a mounting bracket that can be firmly secured to the bars of an animal crush, gate or similar structure so that a device can be attached to the crush and animal handling activities can be carried out safely.
Summary of the Invention
Following extensive testing and research, the present inventor has developed a mounting bracket to enable the worker to safely and easily attach animal handling devices to a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure while avoiding any risk of injury.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a bracket for mounting devices to a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure, the bracket comprising an extendible bar comprising a first end and a second end opposite the first end; wherein the first end comprises at least one clamp and wherein the second end comprises at least one clamp.
In embodiments, the clamps are capable of securing the bracket to the bar of a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure.
In embodiments, the clamps surround the bar of a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure. In embodiments, the clamps partially surround the bar of a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure.
In embodiments, the at least one clamp comprises at least two receiving members capable of receiving the extendible bar. In embodiments, the at least two receiving members comprise at least two apertures for receiving a pin.
In embodiments, the clamp comprises at least two pivotally connected flanges. In embodiments, each flange has at least one pivot connection at one end and at least one latching portion at the other end. In embodiments, the at least one latching portion allows the bracket to be secured to the bar of the crush. In embodiments, a pin passes through the at least one pivot connection and the at least one latching portion.
In embodiments, the flanges surround the bar of a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure. In embodiments, the flanges partially surround the bar of a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure.
In embodiments, the bracket is used for mounting devices to the crush. In embodiments, the bracket is used for mounting animal handling devices to the crush. In embodiments, the bracket is used for mounting an animal doser to the crush. In embodiments, the bracket is used for mounting an animal moving device to the crush. In embodiments, the bracket is used for mounting an animal lifting device to the crush.
In embodiments, the extendible bar comprises a first sleeve capable of receiving a second sleeve. In embodiments, the second sleeve of the extendible bar slides from the first sleeve to extend the bar. In embodiments, the second sleeve slides into the first sleeve. In embodiments the first and second sleeve can be cylindrical casings. In embodiments the first and second sleeve can be made out of any suitable metal material well known in the art.
In embodiments, the animal crush can be a conventional cattle crush or chute or a calving or maternity pen or any suitable holding pen.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of mounting a device to a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure comprising the steps of (i) attaching a mounting bracket to at least one bar of a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure, wherein the mounting bracket comprises an extendible bar comprising a first end and a second end opposite the first end; wherein the first end comprises at least one clamp and wherein the second end comprises at least one clamp;
(ii) attaching the device to the mounting bracket.
In embodiments, the clamps are capable of securing the bracket to the bar of a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure.

Detailed Description ofthe Invention
The present inventor has developed a mounting bracket to enable the worker to safely, firmly and easily attach animal handling devices to a crush, gate or similar structure while avoiding any risk of injury.
There is provided a bracket (1) for mounting devices to a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure, the bracket (1) comprising an extendible bar (2) which comprises a first end and a second end opposite the first end; wherein the first end comprises at least one clamp (3) and wherein the second end comprises at least one clamp (3).
The clamp (3) comprises two receiving members (4a and 4b) capable of receiving the extendible bar (2). The two receiving members (4a and 4b) comprise at least two apertures (5a and 5b) for receiving a pin.
The clamp (3) comprises at least two pivotally connected flanges (6). Each flange (6) has at lease one pivot connection (7a) at one end and at least one latching portion (7b) at the other end. The latching portion (7b) allows the bracket (1) to be secured to the bar. A pin (8) passes through the pivot connection (7a) and the latching portion (7b) and secures the flanges (6) around the bar of the crush or gate.
The flanges (6) surround the bar of the crush or gate. The bracket of the present invention comprises a double flange rather than a single flange. The advantage of the bracket (1) comprising a double flange (6) is that the bracket (1) can lock on the bar of the crush at two points providing a more secure grip and preventing the bracket (1) from moving. The double flange (6) provides improved strength resulting in a mounting bracket (1) that is much stronger than existing mounting brackets. Because the mounting bracket (1) of the present invention securely latches on to the bar of the crush or gate and is stronger than existing mounting brackets, the bracket (1) of the present invention will not slip or collapse when in use. This results in a mounting bracket (1) that is safer to use as animal handling devices that slip in use can cause injury to the worker or the animal. The double flange provides improved grip, prevents sliding and importantly means that the bracket (1) doesn’t rely on external or secondary force to hold it in position. Because the clamps (3) have two flanges (6) they can secure independently on two points of the bar of the crush. More than one mounting bracket of the present invention can be used if required by the animal handling device.
The bracket (1) is used for mounting devices to the crush. The bracket (1) is used for mounting animal handling devices to the crush. The bracket (1) is used for mounting an animal doser to the crush. The bracket (1) is used for mounting an animal moving device to the crush. The bracket (1) is used for mounting an animal lifting device to the crush.
The extendible bar (2) comprises a first sleeve capable of receiving a second sleeve. The second sleeve of the extendible bar (2) slides from the first sleeve to extend the bar. The second sleeve slides into the first sleeve. The first and second sleeve can be cylindrical casings. The first and second sleeve can be made out of any suitable metal material well known the art. The extendible bar (2) can comprise a 50mm by 50mm by 4mm box iron and a 40mm by 40mm by 4mm box iron.
The animal crush can be a conventional cattle crush or chute or a calving or maternity pen or any suitable holding pen.
The apparatus of the present invention is designed for use in conjunction with conventional cattle crushes of all sizes and can be retro-fitted to existing crushes. The apparatus of the present invention can be a mobile device that can be mounted on any part of the existing crush, gate or similar structure.
Preferred features and embodiments of each aspect of the invention are as for each of the other aspects mutatis mutandis unless context demands otherwise.
Throughout the specification, unless the context demands otherwise, the terms ‘comprise’ or ‘include’, or variations such as ‘comprises’ or ‘comprising’, ‘includes’ or ‘including’ will be understood to imply the includes of a stated integer or group of integers, but not the exclusion of any other integer or group of integers.

Claims (10)
1. A bracket for mounting devices to a cattle crush or gate, the bracket comprising an extendible bar comprising a first end and a second end opposite the first end; wherein the first end comprises at least one clamp and wherein the second end comprises at least one clamp.
2. The bracket of claim 1, wherein the clamps are capable of securing the bracket to the bar of a cattle crush or gate.
3. The bracket of any preceding claim, wherein the clamps surround the bar of a cattle crush or gate.
4. The bracket of any preceding claim, wherein the clamps comprise at least two receiving members capable of receiving the extendible bar.
5. The bracket of claim 4, wherein the at least two receiving members comprise at least two apertures for receiving a pin.
6. The bracket of any preceding claim, wherein the clamps comprise at least two pivotally connected flanges.
7. The bracket of claim 6, wherein each flange has at least one pivot connection at one end and at least one latching portion at the other end.
8. The bracket of claim 7, wherein the at least one latching portion allows the bracket to be secured to the bar of the crush.
9. Use of the bracket of any preceding claim for mounting devices to a crush or gate.
10. A method of mounting a device to a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure comprising the steps of:
(i) attaching the mounting bracket of any preceding claim to at least one bar of a cattle crush, calving pen, gate or similar structure;
(ii) attaching the device to the mounting bracket.
