Abstract
An adapter, or collar that engages with the end of a double grooved hammer drill bit, providing it with a cylindrical outer surface suitable for use with a three-jawed chuck. The adaptor can be manufactured in Mild Steel or ABS Plastic. The Steel adapter has a slot along its length to allow the sleeve to flex. At least one protrusion on the inner surface of the adapter engages with one of the slots on the outside of the double grooved hammer drill bit.

SDS Plus Shank Converter
This invention relates to a SDS (Special Direct System/Slotted Drive System) Drill Bit Shank being converted to a Straight Shank Drill Bit by use of a SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve.
During drilling operations in masonry a hand held SDS Plus Drill Gun uses SDS Plus Drill Bits to produce a hole. A hand held battery drill gun with hammer action also produces a hole in Masonry and produces holes in wood and metal also, but uses a straight shank drill bit. The two drill bit's types of shanks are not compatible with each other in their holding chucks. The SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve (invention) acts as an interface between the SDS Plus Drill Bit Shank and the Straight Shank Drill Bit Chuck allowing compatibility.
To overcome the incompatibility of not being able to Insert an SDS Plus Drill Bit Shank directly into a three-pawl type Straight Shank Chuck, the SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve slides over the SDS Plus Drill Bit Shank and converts the drill bit to a Straight Shank type.
The user will be able to carry one type of Drill Bit (SDS Plus Shank) for drilling in Masonry and insert these drill bits into a hand held Battery Drill Gun with a standard three-pawl chuck for use with Straight Shank Drill Bits.
The SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve is designed to be small and lightweight taking minimum space in the toolbox, with simplicity of inserting and extracting over the SDS Drill Bit and into the three-pawl Straight Shank Chuck. The Sleeve has the option of being left attached to the SDS Plus Drill Bit allowing drill bits that are used frequently to have their own Converter Sleeve resulting in fast insertion and removal of the Sleeve and Drill Bit assembly into a standard three-pawl chuck.
The Sleeve is intended for use by both amateur and professional users. The SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve is compatible for use with a battery powered hammer action drill gun, but can be also be used with a hand held mains powered electric drill gun.
The invention will give a direct conversion from SDS Plus Drill Bit Shank to Straight Shank Drill Bit allowing flexibility of the user to carry only one set of drill bits up to the Drill Bit diameter of the design of the three-pawl Straight Shank Chuck being inserted into. The SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve is small in diameter and length, and lightweight.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying Figures:
Figure 1 shows an SDS Plus Drill Bit (Item 1) with slotted shank, trying to align with a three-pawl (jaw) chuck (Item 2) that is designed for holding Straight Shank Drill Bits. At least one pawl will align with a slot from the SDS Plus Drill Bit making the holding chuck and drill bit incompatible.
Figure 2 shows the SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve invention (Item 3).
Figure 3 shows the SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve invention (Item 3) attached to the Slotted Shank of the SDS Plus Drill Bit (Item 1) according to the invention.
Figure 4 shows the SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve invention (Item 3) along with the SDS Plus Drill Bit, both inserted into the three-pawl chuck (Item 2) designed for Straight Shank Drill Bits.
Figure 5 shows the end user assembly instructions for the Mild Steel model.
a. Reference View 1; align SDS Plus Drill Bit (Item 1) with SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve invention (Item 3), observe orientation of chamfered end of Converter Sleeve.
b. Reference View 2; push Converter Sleeve (Item 3) over Drill Bit Shank (Item 1) until flush with base of Drill Bit Shank (Item 1), observe chamfered Converter Sleeve end (Item 3) orientates to base of Drill Bit Shank (Item 1).
c. Reference Views 3, 4 & View Section A-A; insert Drill Bit (Item 1) and Converter Sleeve (Item 3) as an assembly into the three-pawl Chuck (Item 2) shown in Views 3 & 4. Avoid positioning the slot on the
Converter Sleeve directly over a Chuck pawl (jaw) as shown in View 4. Push home until Drill Bit (Item 1) and Converter Sleeve (Item 3) assembly stops against the internal Chuck pawl Positioner Screw (Item 5) as in View Section A-A. With Drill Bit (Item 1) and Sleeve (Item 3) assembly inserted in Chuck (Item 2), tighten Chuck.
Figure 2 shows the SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve invention (Item 3) where two key's are formed to restrain the rotational degree of freedom between the SDS Plus Drill Bit at Figure 3 (Item 1) and Sleeve Figure 2 (Item 3). A slot is also formed on the Converter Sleeve at Figure 2 allowing flexibility on manufacturing variances of the diameter on the SDS Plus Drill Bit Shank, and aiding Converter Sleeve ease of insertion or retraction from the SDS Plus Drill Bit Shank. Axial and radial degrees of freedom are restrained as would the standard design of the threepawl Chuck Figure 1 (Item 2) was intended for.
Two types of Converter Sleeve prototypes were manufactured to test the invention, one in Mild Steel and another in ABS Plastic (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) Figure 6.
a. The Mild Steel version was manufactured and used on an electrical hand held drilling gun and showed no signs of deterioration after near continuous use over fifty holes at 10mm diameter in masonry, with the same Converter Sleeve additionally drilling 10 holes at 13mm and still showing no obvious wear. The Converter Sleeve invention also performed the same on a hand held battery operated Drill Gun. Both high and low speeds were used on both the Drill Gun's with no obvious wear effects on the Converter Sleeve.
b. The ABS version was manufactured using a 3D Printer and showed excessive wear when drilling above 6mm diameter holes in masonry, ten holes of various sizes above this diameter were recorded from the same Converter Sleeve. Below 6mm diameter holes the yield was 40 holes before a Converter Sleeve replacement was required.
No Sleeve Slot was manufactured on the ABS Converter Sleeve model (Figure 6) as the material flex's adequately to accommodate manufacturer's variations in SDS Plus Drill Bit Shank diameters. This also eradicates avoiding positioning the Sleeve Slot on the Converter Sleeve directly over a Chuck pawl (jaw) from the Mild Steel version as shown in Figure 5 (View 4).
The dimensions of the SDS Plus Shank Converter Sleeve invention are small at 32mm long and 12.7mm diameter and is of hollow tube section apart from the two keys, making the invention lightweight at approximately 14gms for the Mild Steel Version and approximately 2gms for the ABS Version.
