Abstract

An ultrasonic water meter (l) comprises a body (2) defining a length of pipe (4) that is adapted to form part of water supply pipework. The pipe (4) has a predetermined internal diameter. A pair of electro-acoustic transducers (9, 10) are located respectively in two cavities (7, 8) defined by the body (2) at upstream and downstream positions relative to the intended flow of water through the pipe (4). The transducers (9, 10) are angled obliquely relative to the longitudinal axis (L) of the pipe (4) whereby an acoustic pulse generated by one of the transducers (9, 10) and propagated at an angle to the longitudinal axis (L) of the pipe (4) through the water flowing in pipe (4) is received by the other transducer (19, 9) and vice versa. An electronic controller (12) is operationally linked to the transducers (9, 10) and is adapted to calculate the volumetric flow of water passing through the pipe (4) from data received from the transducers (9, 10). An output means (16) is linked to the electronic controller (12) for display or for wireless transmission of data received from the electronic controller (12) to a remote receiving station. The water meter (1) is therefore intrusive as it is intended to forms part of water supply pipework but operates electronically using ultrasound so that it has no moving parts rather than being mechanically operated. Also provided is a standpipe (19) in which the water meter (1) is incorporated, the pipe (4) of the water meter (1) forming part of the water supply pipework of the standpipe (19).
