Abstract

254,853. Barker, R. W., (American Bank Note Co.). May 25, 1925. Delivery apparatus.-In a sheet-delivery apparatus for printing-machines in which the sheets are taken from the impression cylinder by grippers 28, 30, Fig. 2, on endless chains 19 and are carried to a receiving-table 15, the chains 19 are so guided by sprocket wheels 17, 20, 21, 23 that they travel in substantially parallel reaches to and from the impression cylinder, upon a decline toward the end of the table most remote from the printing-couple, and then above and parallel with the table so as to turn the sheet completely before delivery. Means are provided for forcing the sheet toward the table when released by the grippers, and for checking the forward movement thereof, and tensioned wires 36 are provided to support the rear ends of the sheets when being carried by the grippers. The turning of the sheet is facilitated by discs 35 on the shaft 16 of the sprocket wheel 17, these discs having recesses to receive' the grippers so as to allow their peripheries to support the sheet. A cam 34 adjacent to the forward edge of the table 15 actuates the grippers to release the sheet which is pressed . towards the table by oscillating presser fingers 47 actuated from the shaft 16. Spring-controlled stops 72 check the forward movement of the sheet, and side and end joggers 78 are then actuated to true up the top portion of the pile of sheets. Each side jogger is slidably mounted and is moved inwardly against the action of a spring by an oscillating cam 85 engaging a projection 84 on a frame 83 carrying the side joggers. The end jogger 78 is reciprocated from the shaft of the cam 85, which is actuated from the shaft 16. The wires 36 supporting the rear end of the sheets when being carried by the grippers pass over rollers 37, 38, one 37 of which is driven from the shaft 16. A roller 41 carried by a screw-adjusted arm 42 serves to keep the wires at the required tension. The table 15 has antifriction rollers 68 engaging vertical slideways in the machine frame and is raised or lowered by a chain 54 attached to a winch 56, which is operated by a hand-wheel 61 to lower the table as sheets accumulate and can be driven from the shaft of the sprocket wheel 20 through a chain 65 and clutch 64 so as to raise the table rapidly for starting the delivery of a fresh pile. Gripper mechanism.-Each gripper, Fig. 4, is carried by fittings 25 on the chains 19 and comprises one rod 27 fixed to the fittings 25 and carrying platens 28, and a second rod 29 journaled in the fittings and carrying gripper fingers 30 to engage with the platens. Coiled springs 31 normally close the grippers, which are opened by the engagement of cams with a crank arm 32 on the rod 29.
