Abstract
A measuring device for a spirit level or straight edge comprising a spirit level measuring unit 1 having an attachment means 3, 4 in which a measuring scale leg 5 is adjusted by way of an adjusting mechanism 4,7. The measuring device will preferably attach to the spirit level and either allow free standing of said spirit level or stand with assistance whist being adjusted. The adjusting mechanism will preferably facilitate a method of measurement to be adjusted. The said measurement scale will preferably comprise of percentages, degrees, ratio, imperial, metric or similar. Preferably the measuring scale will also be adjustable through three hundred and sixty degrees.
Description
Title
Measuring Devices for a Spirit Levei or Straight Edge Background
This invention reiates to a pair of devices which attach to a spirit ievei or straight edge for measuring the offset in any piane.
When someone wants to measure if an object is ievei horizontaiiy or piumb verticaiiy or any angie in between they use a spirit ievei or bubbie ievei to determine this fact, if an object is not ievei or piumb verticaiiy Typicaiiy a spirit or bubbie ievei wiii provide detaii as to which direction the surface of the object is out by but wiii not measure the distance of the offset nor aiiow a pre-set siope, angie or Ratio to be set. To obtain such information the distance is measured by use of a ruier or tape measure whiist baiancing the spirit or bubbie ievei on objects found iying around the vicinity or another pair of hands are required to hoid the ievei in the correct position to aiiow a measurement to be taken which wiii give an indication of height or width i.e. the distance from piumb or ievei. Shouid you wish to transfer a ievei from one area to another the previous method is adopted. This ievei can be extended any distance by pivoting around one end of the device to the next point and foiiowing the same procedure of choking up the end of the level or a second pair of hands. This is not a particularly accurate or stable method.
When Installing pipes which must carry flowing substances away they must be installed with a fall to allow the contents to move along the pipe to be processed elsewhere and at times must be approved by an independent verifier to meet building and statutory regulations this is normally calculated by the builder and pegged. Patios are also better installed with a fall away from premises to avoid saturation of the property. Often independent bodies are required to verify the level or offset of works which is not easily achieved with a spirit level. 1. To overcome the issues associated with gaining accurate measurements between two points or levels the present invention proposes A measuring device with attachment means for attaching the unit to a spirit level or straightedge enabling it to stand freely on flat or radius surfaces or with assistance whilst being adjusted by means of an adjusting mechanism which shall enable a method of measurement to provide information by percentage or degrees or ratio or imperial or metric measuring scales.
Preferably the scales may be set to that which suits the individuals needs thus enabling the user to preset the devices to achieve the required purpose.
Preferably the scales are manoeuvrable by way of adjustable fastening or magnetism.
Preferably the devices can be attached to the spirit level temporarily by way of a manually adjustable fixing system and removed if required without modifying the calibration of the level.
Preferably the units can be stored on the spirit level when not in use.
Preferably when using the devices the ability to bridge an obstruction allowing levels to be taken between the surfaces either side of the obstruction
Preferably the scale unit can be adjusted to measure slope % and/or degrees and/or ratios and/or distance.
Preferably the device will work on level, radius and uneven surfaces
Preferably the scale unit will attach to the base unit and move in any plane. A description of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the devices attached to a spirit level or straight edge; and
Figure 2 the device according to the invention; and
Figure 3 shows an adaptable foot for working with radius surfaces.
In Figure 1 the level measuring unit 1 is shown attached to a spirit level with the base 2 secured to the level by way of adjuster 3 or 4, the scale leg 5 is released and set by way of adjuster 4
Figure 2 shows an alternative method or level measuring unit 1 using magnets 7 to allow movement of the scale leg 5 over base unit 2
Figure 3 shows a radius surface adapter 6 for scale leg 5 which is attached to enable the leg to stand freely on radius surface.
Claims (2)
1. A measuring device with attachment means for attaching the unit to a spirit level or straightedge enabling it to stand freely on flat or radius surfaces or with assistance whilst being adjusted by means of an adjusting mechanism which shall enable a method of measurement by percentage or degrees or ratio or imperial or metric measuring scales.
2. A measuring device according to claim 1, in which the scales are adjustable through 360 degrees
