Description

Hanger
The present invention is concerned with a hanger. More specifically, the present invention is concerned with a hanger for attachment to a packaged item, for example a set of headphones, a mobile telephone case, a set of portable speakers or the like in a box or other package, so that the packaged item can be displayed to potential customers.
Items, such as mobile telephone cases and the like, are displayed in shops so that potential customers can easily view the items. Items are often displayed in their packaging, with the packaged items hung on displays, such as shelving or free standing display carousels, using hooks or hangers.
Packaging for items, such as mobile telephone cases, may include integrated hooks or hangers, by which the packaged items may be hung in shops. Such integrated hooks or hangers may become damaged by repeated removal from and replacement on displays and/or may be easily removed from the packaging, for example by tearing, thereby preventing the packaged item from being displayed.
Not all packaging includes such hooks or hangers. It is known to fix hooks or hangers on an upper surface of packaging, for example using an adhesive, in order to enable packaged items to be displayed. Such hooks or hangers may become damaged by repeated removal from and replacement on displays and/or may be peeled away from the packaging, preventing the packaged item from being displayed.
Existing hooks or hangers, either integrated in packaging or fixed onto an upper surface of packaging, also suffer the disadvantage that they do not have the strength required to support larger and/or heavier packaged items, for example items such as portable speakers or items weighing more than 300 grams, when the packaged items are hung. This can result in the hooks or hangers tearing off the packaging and/or the items falling out of the bottom of the packaging when the packaged item is hung from a display.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a hanger for hanging a packaged item on a display, the hanger including a hanger portion to hang a packaged item on a display and a strap portion to wrap around the packaged item, the strap portion including securing means to secure the hanger on the package and to secure the item within the package.
This is particularly advantageous as the hanger is able to support the weight of larger items within a package.
The securing means may be configured to secure the hanger on at least two surfaces of the package. One of the at least two surfaces of the package may be a lower surface of the package. By securing a lower surface of the package, the strength of the hanger is advantageously increased and the hanger is able to support the weight of heavier and/or larger items.
The securing means may be configured to extend over an opening of the package. The opening may be adjacent to a lower surface of the package. The lower surface of the package may include an "envelope" base.
The securing means may include an adhesive portion. The adhesive portion may be a first adhesive portion and the securing means may further include a second adhesive portion. The first adhesive portion may be positioned at a first end of the strap portion and/or the second adhesive portion may be positioned at a second end of the strap portion.
The securing means may include an adhesive layer. The adhesive layer may extend the length of the strap portion.
The strap portion may include a flexible material, for example a plastic material.
The strap portion may be transparent. In this way the appearance of the hanger does not compromise the appearance of the packaged item.
The strap portion may have a length and a width and the ratio of the length of the strap portion to the width of the strap portion may be at least 5:1, for example at least 7:1, or at least 10:1.
The strap portion may have a thickness and the hanger portion may have a thickness. The ratio of the thickness of the hanger portion to the thickness of the strap portion may be at least 1.5:1, preferably at least 2:1.
The hanger portion may include a tab having an opening that is configured to receive a display hook. The opening may be a Euro hole.
The hanger portion may include a hook member that is configured to cooperate with a display hook.
The hanger portion may be integral with the strap portion.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a combination of a hanger for hanging a package on a display and a package, the hanger including a hanger portion to hang the package on a display and a strap portion to wrap around the package, the strap portion including securing means to secure the hanger on the package and to secure an item within the package.
The package may have a lower surface. The lower surface may include a folded base, for example an envelope base. A portion of the strap portion may extend over the lower surface of the package.
The package may have an upper surface. The upper surface may include a folded tab. A portion of the strap portion may extend over the upper surface of the package.
The hanger may be a hanger according to the first aspect of the invention. A hanger according to the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hanger according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a partial perspective view of the hanger of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank for forming a hanger according to the present invention;
Figure 4 is a front left perspective view of a hanger according to a first embodiment of the invention partially secured to a package;
Figure 5 is a front left perspective view of the hanger of Figure 4 secured to a package;
Figure 6 is a left perspective view of the hanger of Figures 4 and 5 secured to a package;
Figure 7 is a rear perspective view of the hanger of Figures 4, 5 and 6 secured to a package;
Figure 8 is a rear view of the package of Figures 4 to 7; and
Figure 9 is a front perspective view of a hanger according to a second embodiment of the invention partially secured to a package.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a hanger 12 according to the present invention.
The hanger 12 has a hanger portion 24 and a strap portion 26.
The hanger portion 24 has a front face 28 and a back face 30 (as shown in Figures 3 and 6) that, in use, is opposite the front face 28 and an opening 32 that extends through the front face 28 and back face 30. As shown, the opening 32 is in the shape of a euro hole or euro slot.
The strap portion 26 has a first end 34, a second end 36, an inner surface 38 and an outer surface 40.
The inner surface 38 includes an adhesive layer that extends from the first end 34 to the second end 36 and, prior to use of the hanger 12, is covered by a protective layer 42, as shown in Figure 2.
The protective layer 42 has an inner surface 44 and an outer surface (not shown) that is opposite to the inner surface 44. Prior to use of the hanger 12, the inner surface 44 of the protective layer 42 is removably attached to the adhesive layer on the inner surface 38 of the strap portion 26. When the hanger 12 is to be used, the protective layer 42 is peeled away from the strap portion 26 such that the adhesive layer on the inner surface 38 is exposed.
Referring now to Figure 3, the hanger portion 24 of the hanger 12 is formed proximal to the first end 34 of the strap portion 26. The strap portion 26 is folded along its width at line 46 to form tab 48. The strap portion 26 is folded along its width at line 50 to form the front face 28 of the hanger portion 24. The strap portion is folded along its width at line 52 to form the back face 30 of the hanger portion 24. Aperture 54 (in the shape of a euro hole or euro slot) is cut in the front face 28 of the hanger portion 24. Similarly, aperture 56 (in the shape of a euro hole or euro slot) is cut in the back face 30 of the hanger portion 24.
The hanger portion 24 is formed by removing a portion of the protective layer 42 from the adhesive layer on the inner surface 38 of the strap portion 26 and folding the strap portion 26 along lines 46, 50, 52 such that the apertures 54, 56 are aligned to form opening 32. The inner surface 38 of the front face 28 is pressed against the inner surface 38 of the back face 30, such that the adhesive layer holds the front face 28 and back face 30 together. The hanger portion 24 of the hanger 12 thus has a thickness that is double the thickness of the strap portion 26.
Tab 48 is formed at the first end 34 of the strap portion 26, the hanger portion 24 protrudes outwards from the outer surface 40 of the strap portion 26 and the remaining length of the strap portion 26 forms a strap 58 towards the second end 36 of the strap portion 26. A first embodiment of the present invention will now be described with particular reference to Figures 4 to 7.
As shown in Figures 4 to 7, the hanger 12 is secured on a package 10.
The package 10 is a box having a front face 14, a back face 15 that is opposite to the front face 14, a first side wall 16, a second side wall (not shown) that is opposite to the first side wall 16, a top surface 18 and a bottom or rear surface 19 that is opposite to the top surface 18.
The front face 14 includes a transparent window 20, through which an item, in this case a portable speaker 22, is visible.
With particular reference to Figure 8, the bottom surface 19 of the box is an envelope base having flaps 60, 62, 64, 66 that are folded together in order to retain the portable speaker 22 in the box when the packaged speaker is to be displayed in a shop.
In use, the tab 48 of the hanger 12 is secured to a first surface of the packaging by pressing the adhesive layer on the inner surface 38 of the strap portion 26 against the first surface of the packaging. As shown in Figures 4 to 6, the first surface of the package 10 is the top surface 18 of the box. A portion of the tab 48 extends over the top surface 18 of the box and is adhered to the front face 14 of the box, as shown in Figure 5.
The strap 58 is secured on the top surface 18 of the package 10 behind the hanger portion by pressing the adhesive layer of the inner surface 38 against the top surface 18 of the package 10. In a similar way, the strap 58 is secured to the back face 15 of the package 10 and the bottom surface 19 of the package as shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8. The second end 36 of the strap portion 26 is then secured to the front face 14 of the package 10 by pressing the adhesive layer of the inner surface 38 against the front face 14 of the package 10. The strap portion 26 is thus wrapped around the package 10. The strap 58 secures the flaps 60, 62, 64, 66 of the box to secure the portable speaker 22 within the box.
In this way the hanger 12 is tightly secured to the package 10, is able to support the weight of the portable speaker 22 within the package 10 and by virtue of securing the opening on the bottom surface of the package 10, the hanger 12 prevents the portable speaker 22 from falling out of the package while the package is hung on a display.
The hanger 12 is formed from a flexible plastic to enable it to be wrapped around the package 10 in use. The strength of the hanger portion 24 is, in part, provided by its formation from two parts of the strap portion 26 i.e. the double thickness of the hanger portion 24.
The strap portion 26 is transparent so the visual appearance of the package 10 is not compromised by the use of the hanger 12.
Referring now to Figure 9 there is shown a hanger 112 according to a second embodiment of the present invention. Like features are depicted with like reference numerals and will not be described further.
The hanger 112 has a hanger portion 124 and a strap portion 26.
The hanger portion 124 has a front face 128 and a back face that, in use, is opposite the front face 128 and an opening 32 that extends through the front face 128 and back face 30.
As described for the first embodiment, the hanger portion 124 of the hanger 112 is formed proximal to the first end 34 of the strap portion 26. Tab 148 is formed by folding the strap portion 26 along its width.
In use, the tab 148 of the hanger 112 is secured to the top surface 18 of the box.
Variations of the above embodiment fall within the scope of the present invention.
In the embodiment described above the hanger portion 24 includes a tab having an opening that is configured to receive a display. In alternative embodiments, the hanger portion may include a hook member that is configured to cooperate with a display hook.
In the embodiment described above the strap 58 is transparent. It would be understood that in alternative embodiments the strap may be made from any material and may be translucent or may not be transparent.
In the first embodiment, the corners of the hanger are curved or rounded. In the second embodiment, the comers of the hanger are straight. It will be understood that either embodiment may have comers that are curved or rounded or straight.
In the embodiment described above, the hanger is used in conjunction with a box. It will be understood that the package may be any shape and/or may not include a window. Furthermore, the item contained within the box may be any item, for example, headphones or mobile telephone case.
