Abstract

An access control system 1 for a powered object W, comprises a card reader 20 configured to read information stored on a chip 11 in a card 10, and a card capture device 21 to keep the card in the card reader if the card is determined as valid. The card reader is connected to a control unit 22 which operates an on/off switch 23, which allows a powered object to be operated when switch is in the on position. A voltage sensor 24 senses when the powered object is turned off, then allows control unit 22 to deliver a card release signal to the card capture device. The powered object is preferably a mobile machine, and most preferably a fork lift truck. In another embodiment the powered object may be a static machine.

Description

TITLE: Access Control System
The present invention relates to an access control system, especially for a powered object.
In a work environment it is often required to control which employees operate different powered object such as machinery or mobile machine, e.g. fork lift trucks. For example, not only is it necessary to ensure only those employees with suitable training use a particular powered object, but also it may be desirable to control the hours in which a trained employee can use a particular powered object.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to achieve these requirements.
According to the present invention there is provided an access control system for a powered object comprising: a) a card reader adapted to read a card and determine if a card is valid for the powered object, b) a card for insertion into the card reader, said card storing validation information for the card reader to determine if the card is valid, and c) a card capture device to keep the card in the card reader only if the card is a valid card as determined by the card reader.
Preferably said card capture device only allows the card to be released from the card reader when the powered object is turned “on” and then “off’.
Preferably the card capture device is contained in a card reader housing.
Preferably the powered object is a machine. Preferably the powered object is a mobile machine. The mobile machine may be a fork lift truck.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a schematic diagram of the access control system on a forklift truck.
Referring to the drawing there is shown an access control system 1 for a powered object in the form of a forklift truck W. Forklift truck W has (inter alia) a motor X, a key-operated ignition switch Y and a battery Z. Forklift truck W is of a type well known in the art. A card 10 is provided with a read/write chip 11 giving validation information that the user of the card is qualified to use the forklift X, and any additional information such as hours and days in the week the user can drive the forklift truck X. A card reader 20 with card slot is adapted to read a card and determine if a card is valid for the powered object. A card capture device 21 (not visible) is provided inside the reader 20 adjacent a card reader card slot to keep the card in the card reader only if the card is a valid card as determined by the card reader.
Card reader 20 with a card slot is connected to a control unit 22 which operates an on/off switch 23 which must be “on” to allow the forklift truck X to be operated using ignition switch Y. Switch 23 normally defaults to the “off’ position. A voltage sensor 24 senses when the voltage returns to zero when ignition switch Y is turned “off’ after operation of the forklift truck W, which allows the control unit 22 to deliver a card capture release signal 25.
The access control system 1 operates as follows. A user wishing to use the forklift truck W presents a card 10 to the card reader. If the card reader 20 is unable to validate the card indicating the user is not authorised to drive the truck W, the card is ejected by the card reader. The switch 23 remains in the “off’ position, so the forklift truck cannot be operated.
If the card reader is able to validate the card indicating the user is authorised to drive the truck W, the card is captured in the card reader 20 by the capture device 21. The switch 23, as controlled by the control unit, goes to into the “on” position. The user can then operate the truck X with the capture device 21 keeping the card in the card reader 20 with the voltage sensor sensing a voltage able to drive motor X.
After use of the truck W and the ignition Y is switched off, the voltage sensor23 senses no voltage to drive truck W and the control unit 22 issues a card release signal 25 to the card capture device 21 allowing the card to be removed.
The card capture device 21 only allows the card to be released from the card reader when the forklift truck W is turned “on” and then “off’. This ensures that the user finishes the task in hand with the truck W before the card can be removed.
Furthermore, if the card is only valid for set period of time during a day and the card is validated during that period, but the truck W remains in operation by the user after the end that time period, the system 1 still allows the truck W to be operated after the end that time period until it is turned “off”.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the powered object may be a machine other than a mobile machine such as the fork lift truck W.
The machine could be a static machine such as in a factory. Also the card 10 may include validation information other than mentioned above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
