Abstract

254,430. Kings Patent Agency, Ltd., (Horne, A. B.). April 22, 1925. Shafts.-The torsional resistance of a golf-ball shaft is increased by embedding compressed animal or vegetable fibres in longitudinally disposed channels or grooves in the surface of the shafts. Fibres of hemp, ramie, or other plant, silk, or the intestines of animals, properly grouped and bonded with glue, cement, vulcanized rubber, bakelite, or other adhesive, may be used. The fibre 16 is compressed into grooves 2 and is finished flush with the external surface of the handle 1. The insertion of the fibre into the grooves is completed before the binding material has set or has been vulcanized. The grooves are preferably undercut to retain the fibre in place. The shaft may be additionally strengthened by strips of steel 14 which may be flat, triangular, or T-shaped in cross-section. The steel strip is positioned first and the grooves filled with fibre. As shown in Fig. 4, strands 18 of fibre are joined together through a transverse groove 19 in the lower end of the shaft and are again united at the upper end of the shaft and clamped by a plug 22. The fibres may be twisted and disposed in such a manner that the twist is increased by the torsion of the shaft. According to the Provisional Specification the invention may be applied to the handle of cricket bats, tennis and badminton rackets, and the like.
