Abstract

An adjustable strap for carrying a bag that can be used to convert a bag from having a single shoulder strap (such as in a messenger bag, fig. 1) to a bag having two straps (such as in a backpack or rucksack, fig. 4) is claimed. The bag configuration can be switched by altering the strap. The strap comprises a strap block 4, two D-rings 2 and two adjustable clips 3. The D-rings and adjustable clips form a block arrangement 5 which prevents slipping of the strap. The single strap or double backpack strap can thus be maintained at a desired length. The strap block can also be used maintain strap length and strap balance at all times.

Description

Backpack/Messenger Auto Convert Strap
This invention relates to a device enabling you to convert a bag strap from one shoulder strap to two backpack straps.
Many baby-changing bags in particular are produced with a shoulder strap to allow you to carry the bag weight 'hands free’. A cross body shoulder strap can however put a lot of strain on one shoulder making it uncomfortable to carry. Many people now favour a backpack design to allow you to balance the weight evenly across the body with two backpack straps. But a backpack isn’t always a practical option for work or a favourite choice for a fashionable handbag.
Previously people have had to choose between a shoulder strap bag or a backpack. To overcome design and weight distribution problems our present invention proposes a strap that is convertible allowing you to have both options available on a single bag.
With the introduction of two D rings the strap can move freely to extend to become a shoulder strap. The addition of two adjustable clips allow you to increase the length of the shoulder strap and also act as stoppers controlling the length of the shoulder strap, when the adjustable clips come into contact with the D rings.
To convert the auto convert strap from a shoulder strap into backpack straps. The adjustable clips shorten the length of the strap, as the strap is pulled back trough the D rings two straps are available. Converting the auto convert strap quickly and easily into backpack straps. When the backpack straps are being pulled over the arms the adjustable clips come into contact with the D rings. Stopping the auto convert strap from extending to an undesired length as the straps are pulled on to the body. This is a unique and important feature of our invention, which effectively controls the length of the back straps at all times.
An additional problem that has been faced in the past is once the backpack straps are adjusted; if one strap of the bag is grabbed independently the other back strap can slip through the D rings creating one long strap.
This problem has also been eliminated through our auto convert strap invention as we have included a strap block component as part of the auto convert strap which stops the strap slipping through when the strap is converted into backpack straps. If you grab one back strap on the auto convert strap the adjusted length of each strap will be maintained. Giving consistent and even length of both back straps, eliminating any slipping of the strap however the bag is picked up.
Customers can now be at ease knowing that they can carry their bag in a variety of ways, revolutionizing every bag into multipurpose. This invention can be used across the bag market including: changing bags, handbags and workbags, allowing customers to have a versatile bag that can be used in any situation.
The auto convert strap has been used on two of our bags to date, the Hastings and the Lewis.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the auto convert strap being used as a shoulder strap.
Figure 2 shows the auto convert strap converted into a shoulder strap.
Figure 3 shows how the D rings and adjustable clips work as a stopper device for the strap.
Figure 4 shows the auto convert strap being used as backpack straps.
Figure 5 shows the auto convert strap converted into two backpack straps.
Figure 6 shows the strap block in use, maintaining back strap length and eliminating strap slippage.
In Figure 1, shows the auto convert strap 1 being used as a shoulder strap. The adjustable clips 3 have been adjusted to allow the strap to be extended through the D rings 2. A full-length shoulder strap has now been put in place with the adjustable clips 3 holding the strap length at it’s adjusted and desired length.
This works effectively as the D rings 2 block 5 the adjustable clips 3 stopping the strap slipping through and therefore increasing the length of the shoulder strap or unbalancing the weight in the bag.
Figure 2 shows the auto convert strap 1 converted into a shoulder strap. The illustration allows for a more clear and detailed look at the components involved in converting the auto convert strap 1 into a shoulder strap. The adjustable clips 3 have been adjusted to allow the strap to be extended through the D rings 2. A full-length shoulder strap has now been put in place with the adjustable clips 3 holding the strap length at it’s adjusted and desired length. This works effectively as the D rings 2 block 5 the adjustable clips 3 stopping the strap slipping through and therefore increasing the length of the shoulder strap.
Figure 3 shows you a closer look at the unique relationship between the D ring 2 components and the adjustable clips 3 on the auto convert strap 1. Illustrating how the components work together to act as a stopping device, making sure the shoulder strap doesn’t extend further, when adjusted to a desired length.
In Figure 4, shows the auto convert strap 1 being used as two backpack straps. The adjustable clips 3 have been adjusted to shorten the length of the auto convert strap 1. The strap moves freely through the D rings 2 converting into two short back straps. The strap block 4 keeps the adjusted length of back straps by blocking the strap between the two D rings 2. Whether you grab the bag by one or both back straps, either strap will not slip through.
The adjustable clips 3 assist in controlling the length, when the back straps are put over the arms the adjustable clips 3 come in to contact with the D rings 2 and the D rings 2 stop 5 the adjustable clips 3 passing. This stopping device allows the back straps to stay at the desired length when pulled tightly over the arms.
Figure 5 shows the auto convert strap 1 converted into two backpack straps.
The illustration allows for a more clear and detailed look at the components involved in converting the auto convert strap 1 into two backpack straps.
Figure 6 shows you a closer look at the strap block 4 in use. Stopping the back straps slipping. The strap block 4 is stitched on to the auto converts strap 1 preventing any slipping of the component and allowing the strap block 4 to work efficiently at controlling the even balance of the back straps on both arms. Even if the bag is picked up by one back strap the straps will maintain even length at all times, with this unique feature of the auto convert strap 1.
