Affixing by adhesives. - A combined machine for uniting the edges of paper sheets in accurate alignment, and for perforating the united sheets in a line parallel to the gummed edge, comprises a gummer which collects liquid gum from a roller and deposits it on the top edge of the bottom paper sheet, the top sheet being held in adjustable fingers let into an adjustable backlay. A travelling table supported between rigid traces conveys both sheets to rollers which unite them and pass them to perforating rollers. The relative adjustment of the sheets is controlled by a side-gauge and by the back-lay a rear table track providing that the sheets are perforated parallel to the gummed edge. As shown in Fig. 1, a metal table c, which reciprocates between tracks d, d<1> formed on a base plate b, carries a gauge e, adjustable by slotted guides f, f<1> and set-screws g, g<1> to act as a side-lay for the paper sheets. A back-lay h, pivotally secured to the table c by a pin i, is similarly adjustable. Two sets of T-shaped fingers l - - m - - shown in Fig. 2, are let into the face of the back-lay h and secured by spacing blocks n - -. The fingers extend in a forward direction over the table c, flat springs o - - ensuring the passage of the gummed bottom sheets beneath the fingers to the rollers p, p<1>. Arms x, x' on a shaft y, Fig. 1, pivotally carry a gummer u which is constrained to perform an arcuate movement by a sliding piece attached to the gummer and working on a pivoted bar. A gum trough, with a rotating roller which contacts with tongues on the gummer u, slides in a track fitted adjacent the back-lay h. The feed rollers p, p' and the shafts N, N' carrying the perforating wheels 0, 0<1>, Fig. 7, are connected with the driving shaft R, and by synchronizing gears and a clutch Y, driven from the shaft R, is adapted to be withdrawn by a pivoted interceptor 2, operated by a pedal 4, to disengage a spring-pressed plunger Z from the clutch block. One complete turn of the clutch shaft imparts a half turn to a main shaft 7 which carries discs 8, 8<a> with pins 9, 9<a> respectively, as shown in Fig. 4, the pins 9, 9<a> alternatively engaging a pin on a disc 10 formed on a rocker shaft 11 which imparts a rocking motion through gearing to the shaft y and operates the gummer u. The shaft y carries an eccentric and pawl which engages a. ratchet wheel to actuate the gum roller in the track. Levers 29, 29a on the shaft 7 intermittently engage dogs on the table c through slots in the base-plate b to impel the table forward at each half turn of the shaft 7, the return stroke of the table being effected by springs.
