Abstract

254,167. Johnson, H., and Payne, A. F. Nov. 9, 1925. Anti-dazzle screens.-An anti-dazzle screen for the protection of vehicle drivers is constructed so that its height is greater at its outer vertical edge than at its inner edge, the lower edge, which may be either straight or curved, being inclined downwardly and outwardly, with the result that the line of vision between the driver and the headlight of an approaching vehicle moves substantially along the medium line from one end of the screen to the other. In the construction shown the anti-dazzle screen 1 is of taper formation with substantially straight upper and lower edges, and is attached to a projecting arm 7 on a clip 8 embracing the upper edge of the wind-screen 9 through the medium of a bracket or fitting 6, on which the anti-dazzle screen 1 is hinged by means of a sleeve 4 integral with the frame 3 of the screen and embracing a pin 5 on the bracket. The screen is normally turned to an horizontal or inoperative position by a coiled spring 12, but can be turned down and retained in its operative position by a spring catch 14, in which position the screen may cause the automatic illumination of a lamp. A vertical adjustment of the screen is obtained by providing the bracket 6 with a series of holes 11, two of which are engaged by bolts 15 passing through holes in the arm 7. Modifications are described in which the screen is supported on the wind-screen standard or on the side edge of the wind-screen frame or on a vertical bar depending from the vehicle roof or from the upper edge of the wind-screen, and in which the vertical adjustment is effected by providing a sliding sleeve on the outer edge of the anti-dazzle screen. In further modifications, the screen 1 is supported from the upper edge of the wind-screen by a pair of hooks or, in the case of a hinged screen, the axis of the hinge may lie in an inclined direction.
